I used to drive these in the Australian Army, like first comment, need ballast in the back. Also before all water operations we took off all inspection hatches and drain plugs then greased them up and put them back on. We sealed everything with grease!

I drove the M548 in the Canadian Armed forces, with an empty back you need to add ballast, it keeps the front up. Just for future reference if you try any of the other 113 family add ballast. With the amount of water coming in it looks like you lost a drain plug

Back in the 80's , me and my family were camping on the north end of Deer Creek when the National Guard showed up with some type of amphibious vehicle about 3x the size of Heavy D's machine here. They loaded up a bunch of us in the camp ground we were at and then proceeded to head towards the boat ramp and splash! Only, I was about 5 years old. I had no clue what was going on other than I was going to take a ride on the Army vehicle. Imagine my shock when I thought they were about to murder me! Anyways, they took us out for about an hour Stroll and allowed the adults to do dives off the water craft. I totally recommend you do this if you ever get the opportunity.

M113 Family, and not a troop carrier. We use to call them Track Load Carriers here in Australia to move cargo . . . and Yep . . . as the others have said, there is a process to follow before swimming these things. Checking all your Drain, Inspection and Service Hatches seals are sealing correctly so no water gets in at all. Extra weight added to the cargo area to trim them out so they sit nice and even in the water.
If you do it right . . . your bilge pumps don't pump any water, and providing you have flat water . . . they'll swim all day . . . use to be fun operating them.

M548 Cargo carriers were primarily used by the field artillery to carry ammunition. The largest difference in controls between the M113 models and this variant is the steering. All models use independent braking on each set of tracks to make it go left or right. Primary steering is by those two metal rods "laterals" (its not an "A3 model, those have steering wheels and power brakes) What's missing from the M548 are the two upper steering levers for water operation. I drove 113A2 and M577 A2's (among other vehicles)until 1995 when I left Armor for Engineering. Beats walking ! Death before Dismount.

Hey Dave, the military has a load schedule for fording their vehicles. That being said, ballast added to the bed at near the scheduled weight will bring the nose up. I heard DD say something about a Gamma Goat. Those I do know about. We tested the fording capabilities when I was in the service. 1 of three the first trip out. Learning curve. 4/4 on the next. You have to load them properly or you will sink it. QUICK. Good luck.

The M548 is a cargo carrier not a personal carrier. It was mostly used to carry rounds for the M155 and M110 howitzer in the US Army. There is no HI & Lo on the M548 it just a three speed. You also need to add counter weight to the rear of the vehicle and it will level out. Those plug that you were trying to pull are bleed valves for the disk brakes there that are used for swimming. The two handles by the master cylinders right in front of the lats.

Our artillery corps use these stuff all day long to carry shells for the propelled artillery vehicles... But I had absoloutely no idea these things are amphibious as well. What I love about these things is just the fact it handles like the standard M113, only it sits much higher and its easier to operate because you got a lot of visibility as well just like a small truck.

My boyfriend and I are stuck in the grand canyon national park with a 2000 ford f250 7.3 with a blown tranny, a 35ft long camper, and now a 2000 Ford focus. We tried pulling the camper and truck out with the car and it blew the radiator hose. No taxis will come into the park and get us neither will tow trucks. His birthday was the 5th and mine is tomorrow! If there is anyway we could get a rescue tow out of the canyon we'd owe you a big one!

Thinking on it, the Weasel would have been better to go rescue that stuck school bus. Weasels have lower ground pressure (per sq. inch) than FEET do (this is why they do so well in a swamp/snow). There should be a trim vane on the front (where those hinges are they had their feet on) the bilge pump(s) (there should be a battery powered electric pump) EITHER OF THEM, should be able to nearly empty it, if she was full, in less than five minutes.... P.S. I did notice that ONE of you was smart enough to have/put on a PFD!
