Back in May of '93 there were tours of the castle...there was a clear plastic partition where you could look into St. George's Hall...it was utter devastation. So glad to see it looking so beautiful.
I was honored to walk the corridors of Windsor Castle this past July, and had to pinch myself to remind me that I was able to see the restored section that was tragically burned many years ago. How fortunate it was that many people worked together to salvage as much as they could. There is a marker in the spot where the fire started...it's a very emotional reminder to say the least.
Absolutely very worthwhile. Well done Andrew for saving so much, well done Phillip and Charles for making key decisions on the rebuild . And very well done for all those who donated to the rebuild of a major institution
God Bless the craftsmen that kept and are keeping ancient skills, secret tricks, ancient knowledge and traditions alive. I hope young people, will be inspired by this, as to become the restoration experts of the future. With so much destruction, to put back what was destroyed is a splendid badge of honor.

what a wonderful documentary, amazing to see what can be achieved when all parties work together collectively on a united front, Britain strongest accolade, fantastic to see true artisans from the all corners of the land, I very much hope younger apprentices had an opportunity to experience these great works. Windsor Castle is of course of great national importance, how fantastic it was to see its restoration following the fire was by the skills and determination of its people
Superb documentary that makes me Proud to be English - The fact that the Royals themselves paid for this means no nasty comments about the cost! - More than this though it was the sheer dedication and inspiration of all those involved that makes me so proud - I love the fact that in Britain we still have such amazing people who still have the 'old' crafts - Most have been a 'dying' art - however this also showed younger people what importance these crafts have and many have gone to learn from the 'Masters' of these trades .... therefore ensuring that the crafts and disciplines do not die out -

Everything from sending some of the items salvaged from the fire. On a world wide tour to opening up Buckingham Palace for tours. They also used funds generated from income from their personal properties. As for complaining about the tax payers funding the Royal Family. They bring on average into the UK annually. 5 times the amount of money in the way of tourism alone (Appart from 2020, when everywhere shut down because of Covid.) than is actually spent on them. People don't visit the UK for the food, it's wine or high fashion. & the certainly do Not visit the UK for its weather! They visit it for its History & the Pomp & Splendour. That is attached to it through the Royal Family. In this alone the Royal Family more than pays for its up keep.

I heard that some of the specialist stonemasons. Who worked on the restoration of Windsor Castle. Have volunteered their services to help restore Notre Dame.
I'm absolutely amazed and really rather proud that we have the expertise to complete a restoration such as this.So many young people learning from the master craftsmen and women.It's great that we still have these skills.I hope their efforts have been documented somewhere within those walls.So many times I've wondered who actually made the structure/carved that staircase/chiselled the piece of stone -and nobody could tell me.We should acknowledge our artisans,not just the people who paid for the work.

Much credit to the public and military for saving 99% of the interior furnishings, art, and artifacts. The loss of such would have doubled the restoration costs. A rug alone would have been well over a hundred thousand pounds. The massive rugs are all made by hand from the finest silk and wool. Just one of my rugs, made for my library, took over a year to make at a cost of thirty eight thousand pounds. And it is not nearly as large as those in Windsor. The loss of irreplaceable art and artifacts would have been far more devastating than the structural damage. As would have been the case of losing the one of a kind, antique, and historical furnishings. The restoration and newly redesigned work done in the traditional manner is simply superb. Every last detailer was crafted with the utmost pride and respect. Such craftsmanship is slowly disappearing in todays world of tear it down and rebuild new the quickest and cheapest way possible. Plastics and foiled foam is used in place of proper wood or plaster adornments, mouldings, and trim. If such a fire was to happen in 30 or 40 years from now, there may not be any master craftsman to restore the castle properly. All pieces will be printed and glued into place. We are on the cusp of losing craftsmanship of this kind to technology, cheaper methods, and inferior replacements. This is not to say technology and plastic does not have it's usefulness. Ineed they do help improve in certain areas where needed. However, our homes and business must be healthy environments. Too many chemicals and voc are creating generations of sick and cancer ridden people. Even family pets are seeing a rise in cancer and other diseases associated with toxins in their living spaces. We must reduce the amount of synthetics in our living spaces. Ok, ok, back to the castle. Bravo to all who saved, restored, and renewed this mighty symbol of English history and heritage. Cheers!

From the shoes we wear to the largest giga yacht, being assembled as I type this, is all part of the same show off game. How one shows off is what defines them. This is the primary reason why most who come from the old wealth do not mix with the newly wealthy. They lack class, dignity, and compassion with their garish displays without regard for those with little to nothing to their name. Its disgusting. Many of the world's wealthiest families do not attract attention to themselves for this reason. Many of the new wealthy make a huge display of the charitable giving. A grotesque way to show off. That said, it doesn't matter to the recipients of those much needed funds. As you get dressed remember you're unconsciously showing off with the clothes on your person: your ewelry and/or watch. The vehicle one owns is a status symbol. We show off our status by buying the best we can afford. To a point there is nothing wrong with this. I was just Speechless to watch Windsor Castle was a Towering Inferno with huge billowing smoke and blazing fires coming out its windows and roofs.How devastating without mercy. However I am glad that many people came to the rescue including HRH Prince Charles and Prince Andrew contributed to the rescue and restoration of the majestic heritage in good time.All craftsmen and artisans of the land, military and gov officials worked real hard to reorganise the full intricate restoration unbelievable. Glad Her Majesty The Queen was able to use Windsor castle for her Diamond Jubilee Celebration. May God preserve Windsor Castle till the end of time to preservere centuries old English artistry and its mammoth major interior heritage which are costly indeed.

What a horrifying event! Seeing it go up in flames struck me to my core. The history revealed by the fire is fascinating however. Nobody would ever have had a chance to see these things otherwise. In an aside...I have always liked Prince Charles...my impression has been that he's a pretty genuine and kind man.
I am shocked at some of the comments! ! No building that is a part of history should burn and not be restored if possible. I don't care who owns it. I am truly sorry for some of these comments from America. Please believe we are not all so unfeeling.

I would love to see Windsor Castle! It's the only place that really interests me and is most like a Castle of all the Queen's Homes! I think it's because of St.George and the Garter Knights and the idea of Chivalry!
It's beyond magical to have the opportunity to walk the floors of the castle and appreciate the history that occurred there over a thousand years since being built. As an American whose ancestors fought in the American Revolutionary War back in 1777, I was SO honored that we still have a strong connection and appreciation to our early British history.
You will love it. I have walked through it. St George's Hall is truly breathtaking. Walking in St George's Chapel is awesome, I stood near the tomb of King Henry VIII. Wow!

No it wasn't, which made me very angry! The (Conservative) Government insisted they didn't have the money despite paying no insurance premiums on Government buildings. They forced Buckingham Palace to open to the public and the charges to go to fund the £36.5 million restoration cost. This was a bargain price considering what was involved and the work will last several centuries. Eight years later the (Labour) Government spent £789 million (21 times the cost) on the Millennium Dome as it was Tony Blair's pet project. There were several financial bail outs as it generated little income i.e. few visitors, to what was just a large plastic tent. We have warped priorities in this country.
She appreciates that she is the custodian of history, and not just the private owner. Too, too many people who live in historic places don't seem to get that.
I am amazed how people came and risked there lives to remove paintings and other priceless items. and now they aren't even allowed near it unless they pay!

The marriages of three of the Queen's own children have ended in divorce, something that would have been unthinkable before WW2. There is nothing in the law of accession that prevents the Prince of Wales from being our next king. The abdication of King Edward VIII wasn't 'cut and dried' there was a faction in the government and in parliament that supported him in his wish to marry Mrs Simpson AND for him to remain King*, he didn't HAVE to go, but a majority in Parliament wanted him out. (*A group calling themselves: The King's Men - included Winston Churchill)
All done wonderfully, except that Hollywoodesque wooden "lantern and lobby." replacing the ancient chapel. What a sad fake!! Pull it down as soon as you can, and replace it with something in conformity with the castle: namely, a stone structure.
Didn't her Majesty squeal when she realised the public purse would not be opened to fund the restoration ,H M would have to fund it out of her own overflowing pot which didn't go down to well I'm afraid.

I would love to see Windsor Castle! It's the only place that really interests me and is most like a Castle of all the Queen's Homes! I think it's because of St.George and the Garter Knights and the idea of Chivalry!
It's beyond magical to have the opportunity to walk the floors of the castle and appreciate the history that occurred there over a thousand years since being built. As an American whose ancestors fought in the American Revolutionary War back in 1777, I was SO honored that we still have a strong connection and appreciation to our early British history.
You will love it. I have walked through it. St George's Hall is truly breathtaking. Walking in St George's Chapel is awesome, I stood near the tomb of King Henry VIII. Wow!
If you do visit, allow a whole day to see everything. It's really quite a large building - or set of buildings.

Windsor is one of the most beautiful towns in England. I loved visiting it and staying there. The people were nice, and the town is just a pure delight to visit.

Don't worry, they did, as the fire happened in 1992, the full restoration was completed in 1997, and it is now 2018, and thus far, everything is fine.

Yes, the fire regulations were upgraded, and the newest fire safety features and fail safes were installed and are upgraded and inspected every year and fire safety regulations.

Carol, it was pointed out in the video that because is is state property it is underwritten by the government.
No it wasn't, which made me very angry! The (Conservative) Government insisted they didn't have the money despite paying no insurance premiums on Government buildings. They forced Buckingham Palace to open to the public and the charges to go to fund the £36.5 million restoration cost. This was a bargain price considering what was involved and the work will last several centuries.
Eight years later the (Labour) Government spent £789 million (21 times the cost) on the Millennium Dome as it was Tony Blair's pet project. There were several financial bail outs as it generated little income i.e. few visitors, to what was just a large plastic tent. We have warped priorities in this country.

The United Kingdom has gone through a huge social revolution in the eighty odd years since King Edward VIII abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. The marriages of three of the Queen's own children have ended in divorce, something that would have been unthinkable before WW2.
There is nothing in the law of accession that prevents the Prince of Wales from being our next king.
The abdication of King Edward VIII wasn't 'cut and dried' there was a faction in the government and in parliament that supported him in his wish to marry Mrs Simpson AND for him to remain King*, he didn't HAVE to go, but a majority in Parliament wanted him out.

The Castle is State Owned so the State should have paid!! Renters don't have to pay for improvements.
