The thing I like about the SY22 is that for a Synth from 1990, it still sounds quite 80s-esque. But then a lot of the sounds are apparently from the DX7 and others in the DX range. And my pleasure, thanks Corey!

Oh i didn't know you had an SY22 at your old place :O Didn't we even once talk about that instrument some 5-6 years ago? I once had one and got it in 2009 or so but sold it again a few years later when i got a Roland D-50. Needed the space and couldn't really keep both. So i sold my SY22 again but i still kinda regret it as it has that really unique early 90s mojo in its sound. The church organ patch also sounds amazing still. Even today. I loved using it for motion pads mostly. Also loved that Water flow sound it had in its limited but effetive sample rom. Often loved to just play and listen to it. The FM synthesis is just a simple 2 OPerator FM synthesis like on my Yamaha PSS 680 and a liiittle harder to set up for new sounds compared to the PSS 680 easy editing capabilities. But the SY22 is still a fantastic synth and i loved its keypad. They have a nice key travel. Much better compared to the Roland D-50 i must admit. 🙃

Wonderful to see the past and modern technology working in seamless harmony. Though I can only imagine the work and skill required to get everything playing nicely together.
Just watching the protracker playing on the TV brings back fond memories.
Thing is when I start taking about stuff like that, I forget what i'm doing. I think as a result i've got one shoulder slightly stronger than the other now lol.
Polyend Tracker may be modern but I like how it's retro inspired and indeed the way it works in harmony with the old stuff. I wanna try and get the Amiga included in the setup next 🙂

It's been a good while since I have seen any of your videos have always been subscribed. But when you brought out the synth oh what memories it brought back. I have owned a few Yamaha also a Kawai which I still own and has moved with me over the years. I hope you are also doing your repair videos I enjoy them so much.

I love the sound of the 80s. My heart will always remain with the DX7. Although I'm envious of anyone who owns the rare and huge DX-1! Any arcade coin-op enthusiasts will know that almost every cabinet from the mid 80s to the early 90s used a Yamaha chip for audio :-)
The little DX100 is also the weapon of choice for many talkbox artists such as Byron Chambers

I love it! Thanks for the great exploration. Way back when I had an SY77 which came out the previous year and was the big brother workstation to the SY22. Oh I wish I would have kept it. I don't think I even kept any disks. I love these class of synths from the late 80s and early 90s. Lately I have been having fun with the Roland AIRA S-1 and SH-4d desktop Synth. Not quite the same as they are more or less emulated analog/digital but still fun.
I barely understood the process in this video, but thoroughly enjoyed learning AND listening

Just amazing the sounds and countless variations you can make with those Yamaha’s and it was so good to see the Commodore 64 getting in on the act.
All the different ways you can play just one track and mix different styles together is just fabulous and they sounded amazing.
Could re-engineered tracks from previous albums be on the cards in the future for a new project l wonder? 🤔

I think you've figured out one of my future album ideas 😄 even though it's not the one i'm working on currently.
The SID just mixed in so well with the SY22. I kinda want to use it more often in my music.

Beautiful. I have the TG-33 and it's one of my all time favorite synths. I used my A600 with OctaMED Sound Studio to control my instruments via MIDI. 😍
To be honest if I were to get one of these of my own, i'd go for the TG33 myself instead of the SY22.
OctaMED on the Amiga is an excellent program. I've messed around with MIDI and OctaMED 4 and 5 before. 🙂
@@MsMadLemon Some years ago was quite ready to find TG-33 for cheap. I once sold it and then bought It again; truly a little gem.
OctaMED: I'm so used to it (I wrote music in "vertical" for decades 😅) that sometimes I still use it, especially for drum programming (using the Amiga as an external midi device).

I’m currently saving for a mixer - will probably go for a Soundcraft too - as this is my biggest limitation at the moment; connectivity! Having to swap out cables all the time as I only have one input on the MPC One.

Swapping cables all the time is a pain! With regards to mixing consoles, I do like Soundcraft, it's saved me a lot of headache in more ways than just music creation, i've used it for a few things since i've got it. It's got a few niggles as I stated in my review but overall I really like how well it works.
Ah I love the SY22. I'd forgotten how beautiful it sounds. Unfortunately mine got too many broken keys and replacement keys are expensive, so I've been working on trying to turn it into a half-width rackmount tone generator.
Lol! I'm hearing a lot about broken/dead keys with regards to the SY series. Even the one I have has two broken/wobbly keys. I guess the SY22 has a bit of a reputation then :-))
To be honest, If I were to buy one myself, I'd get the TG33 instead of the SY22. I'm at the stage where I only really need the module.

This was literally the same thing I did in the early 90s.. I got to spend a couple of hours with my sister's boyfriend's Korg M1 recording sounds from it on to high quality tape for later sampling onto the Amiga for my mods 😊
Really cool watching you set everything up and play your track with the C64 integrated into it! The SID holds its own when mixed in with other instruments/effects; I love what LukHash does with it!
Thanks, yeah the SID definitely holds it's own and indeed LukHash is very talented! He uses the TherapSID which is a beautiful SID Synth, i'm still waiting for mine to come.

OK, you're starting to kick it up a notch, old school! But of course I would expect nothing less. Soon you'll need more channels on the mixer, and then comes the patch bay and the racks. Maybe you'll avoid that, but .. why would you want to? 🙂 BUT really what you want is a good effects unit - put that pedal you have and feed it via an AUX and go to town. BTW, I did wind up buying the Cobolt 8 AND the Argon 8. Because I could, and I have no self control.

And don't tempt me. I'm already so bad with music gear lol.
Cobalt 8 vs Argon 8.. I'm curious to know how you're finding each of them since you have both. Is there one you like more than the other?
@@MsMadLemon I see synth, I want synth. Is it my fault they made them affordable? The two are for-sure brothers, and operate in similar ways. The Argon has a more modern sound with strong wavetable (think Waldorf) heritage. The Cobolt I actually didn't like that much until the more recent firmware updates, which brought it some more organic and classic synth sounds. It's never going to be really analog (Waiting for the new Beringer Pro-800) but it does have a good sound. Treat every instrument for its strengths and don't expect them to everything. I really liked your using MIDI on this song, I think it opened it up and brought a more high-resolution that 8-bit samples will never have.
@@ChrisCebelenski I have a thing for combination, I've always liked messing with 8bit samples alongside MIDI. Just like I did the SID and MIDI combinations as well as the Polyend Samples in this video. I've always enjoyed experimenting like this. I think I want to have different setups for different tracks in my latest album. I guess whatever sounds right to my ears 🙂

I was debating getting a Msiah for my SX-64, but most cartridges don't work with it. But also, I rather have real knobs to control everything, so I ordered a TherapSID by Twisted Electrons. Still waiting for it. I have a 6581 and 8580 set aside just for it.
I'm still waiting for my TherapSID, and the same, I have a 6581 and 8580 set aside. The problem with the Mono synth in Mssiah is that it seems to only allow a single channel unless i'm missing something. You can mod your C64 and install potentiometers. But yeah, TherapSID is more appealing.
@@MsMadLemon When I say knobs, I mean knobs for everything. 4 knobs with two paddle controllers isn't enough for subtractive synthesis. My Pro 3 Monosynth has like 62 knobs. I never messed with Mssiah before but it seems like it should have a para mode. Not all monosynths have a paraphonic mode, though. I believe the TherapSID does. Although para usually refers to all VCOs going through the same envelope and filter. The SID can push each VCO through it's own filter an envelope which is nice. it can get close to polyphonic, but I feel the minimum for that is 4 voices, so we aren't limited to just triads for chords.

even though I have a keyboard (broken) i still could never create music with it!! Tracker is way easier for me........ to have these skills, making music and even then REMEMBERING it to recreating them....... a skill sadly i dont have....... SO VERY TALENTED!

Love to see you doing more involved stuff with the Polyend! Now you’ve got your hands back on the SY, do you think you’ll still be using the reface DX for FM sounds to sample?
I do wonder about the reface dx. I've sampled all from it but I use it less now that I've got these. I definitely use the reface cs more than the reface dx.
@@MsMadLemon As far as I know, the SY and DX both have 4 operators and the same algorithms. So they should make basically the same sounds. I think the DX has a few extra options for feedback, but you don’t make gnarly sounds, so the only use for feedback you’d have is in making a square wave and other waves like that. Otherwise they should be really close, plus the SY can layer in sampled sounds on top.
Edit: I just properly checked, and it actually has only 2 operators (or so says Wikipedia). So the DX should be able to make more complex sounds. But of course if you’ve already explored the possibilities with long-evolving sounds to sample offset etc on the DX and feel you’ve explored it all, there’s not much reason to sample more in and of itself.
Also the SY has more wave forms than just sine, so in practice the complexity may be about the same or even higher on the SY?

Did it had general midi and system exclusive commands for with music-x at amiga or cubase at atari st? Like 16 channels each own instrument e.g.
