Ranger Jackson lived next door to me in Uvalde when I was in high school. He was a good man for sure. He asked what I would do when I graduated. I told him join the Marines. He paused, looked me in the eyes real hard, then said, "don't quit. You can do it if you want to." That stuck with me through boot camp. I was the smallest one in my platoon. Self doubt would creep in at times, but who wants to quit and go home and have to explain that and to someone like Joaquin? After 28 years I retired for medical reasons. The Marine Corps reinforced in a huge way, never quit in me. He was a tough man but a good reader of people I believe.

I met Ranger Jackson and his wife at a book signing in Albany , Texas and was impressed at his gracious and humble personality. Being a Retired Texas Police Officer myself, he wrote some very kind remarks in my book. I will always remember and honor the occasion.
I got to me this wonderful man about eight years ago.
I was the president of the Collin County chapter of the Daughters-of the Republic of Texas.
He and his wife are the most wonderful people he was kind honest truthful.
Joaquin Jackson gave us a wonderful program of his life. Just a wonderful humble gracious man and a great TEXAN

Sir: Iam from a LE family in Oregon; I have always looked up to the Texas Rangers as the premier LE agency in the USA; I was fortunate to meet a Ranger in Guthrie in 1976, a very special day for me. Thank you for your service and God bless you👍

I met Joaquine years ago. Was introduced to him by my old friend and boss, Texas legend Happy Shahan. I'll never forget that moment. Mr. Jackson was a monumental figure. However, I am 1 inch taller and just a bit heavier. As he shook my hand he looked at Happy and said, "Well Happy, I see you've finally hired you a body guard big enough to whip both of us." Then the men broke out in warm laughter. In further encounters with Mr. Jackson I found him to be the shining example of an old world Texas gentleman. Though it was only for a brief time, I am proud and grateful to have known him.
He was assigned to work with me on disbanding the heads of the Texas Mafia ( Texas Railroad Commission ) before we could get warrants issued ( judge warned them we were coming ) 16 of the top 20 cleaned out there desks in the middle of the night and resigned. Pieces of shit were never charged. 10 + 1 out of Mexico put a contract out on him and his wife. That definitely didn't go well for 10+1. In the early 1980s a group bought 3 mostly glass Houseboats and began renting them on Lake Amistad in Del Rio ( Rio Grande ). A kid with a 22 climbed onto a cliff on the Mexican side and lit up all 3 Houseboats loaded with families and children. They returned to base. Next morning the kid was on the cliff and lit them up again. Jackson picked the kid off from across the lake. Next morning the kids' father and uncles were on the cliff with large bore rifles. Jackson lit them up as soon as they fired their first shot. Not going to say how many died on that cliff before Jackson was summoned to DC, he left several ranchers at his post who killed several more while he was in DC. He was ordered to cease and desist. Jackson gave DC officials both middle fingers and left. Eventually Mexican army personnel went out and closed off the cliff. The new generation of Rangers are a far cry from Jackson old school methods ( which worked, Uvalde school shooting would have never happened during his time ) he would have interrogated the captured shooter from the first failed attempt and the second attempt never would have transpired

This was a sweet and touching memorial for those of us that knew or met Joaquin. He was a great ranger and Texan, but also the salt of the Earth. Rest in peace old friend.

I meet the Ranger that took out the 1968 Tower Shooter in Austin years back.
I met Ranger Ray Martinez at a book show.He was a city policeman when the tower shootings tooknplace.

Such a great segment. I can understand where Ranger Jackson is coming from, being a 20 year Leo myself. Its a Brotherhood. Going through the DPS Academy is a great accomplishment that will allow you to experience many things most only dream of. He is a true legend and one of the many reasons I became a law enforcement officer.

I just bought one of rifles from his collection TEXAS HISTORY BABY
I have a friend who knew him well who upon returning from serving two tours of duty in Vietnam as a U.S. Marine was, you might say, living life on the wild side who ended up getting stabbed in a bar fight. Joaquin intuitively knew he was planning revenge on the man who stabbed him & talked him out of it. He credits Ranger Jackson with keeping him out of prison. I read his book almost without putting it down & it's very clear why he's such a legend in Texas. He led such an interesting, not to mention, honorable life.
I am an exact look alike for Jaqueline Jackson.We were to have a picture shoot if both he and i ,two years before his desth.I am a retired police captain.I did not attend his funeral because it would cause problems for his Grandchildren and wife because if such a 100% resemblance. He and i spoke about this resembles many times .I am now 81 years old and one day i would like to visit his gravesite and visit with his Grandchildren. He was a great Ranger and a great American.

That is one of my most favorite books I'm not proud to say but I've read it probably more than I have the Bible over and over he was a great Texan rest in peace Ranger

From the moment I saw Joaquin Jackson portraying Sheriff Wes Wheeler in the movie "The Good Old Boys" based on Elmer Kelton's novel of the same name, I've been a MAJOR fan. The more I learned about this legendary Texas Ranger, the more he emerged as a genuine hero in my eyes. It's no wonder Texas is so proud of him. Daughter-in-law Liz Jackson is spot on about Joaquin's biography stirring up a vast spectrum of emotions in the reader. And it's definitely worth reading.
There is a prequel to that great book. I meet Elmer a few times, one of the best all time Western Writers.
@@victorwadsworth821 If you're referring to The Good Old Boys, and its prequel, Six Bits A Day, there's also a sequel, The Smiling Country. I own and treasure all three of Elmer Kelton's Hewey Calloway novels -- and several of his other works as well.

Saw him speak at a conference in Kerrville sev years ago. He wasn't solid but damn if you didn't feel the aura in the room.

If the general public really knew what Texas Rangers actually do. It wouldn’t make much of a story.
He made sure to criticise a civilian who shot and killed an intruder in this autobiography. No true Texan throws shade on citizens standing up for himself. Also - read about his son.

I went to school with Lance his youngest and rode the same bus and that was said about him and there may be some truth to it but I really don't know. What I do know is that his boy Lance was solid without a hint of racist leanings so I can say that he didn't raise his boy to be.
