Game: Age of Empires II Definitive Edition - Hry
Knowing that I'm gonna get a civ overview: Nice
Knowing that I'm gonna hear the intro song again: Priceless
THANKS Squarespace for sponsoring this INTRO!
That's fan service!!
The fact that the intro is back brings me a lot of happiness.
Mood
What a joy to see a new civ overview! I thought I'd never see one again.
Also the intro seems to be back!
@@spooky5787X I don't think it's back outside of civ vids, sadly.
Cute profilepic ;)
Well there's only the 8 in AoE4 so there can only be so much civ content
because there was no sponsors like squarespace, you know, your patreon dont mean shit for the content
An important thing you missed - by getting cavalier on castle you’ll get paladins quicker than any civ once hitting imperial age. Getting paladins before everyone else can easily snowball the game… and it’s 50% off!
You know this man is a legend when you didnt even buy the expansion pack that HAS Burgundians, but are immediately stoked to see this vid.
I don’t even play aoe but still watch every video!
@@Seawiiplay Same.
@@Seawiiplay me 2!
I'm only playing AoE4 right now but I've watched almost all his videos. They are so nice and I don't have to think too much haha, except when the math comes out.
Yea I'm watching these videos still playing on Forgotten Empires expansion😅
I missed the intro music in your previous videos. Good thing to see you are still using it. :)
Feels like the Burgundians were made by AOE3 devs. Revolutions, unique effects, and the eco bonuses, it's definitely an AOE3 civ in AOE2
When I feel down I always try to remember that SotL still has some civ overviews open and that the potential of remaking old ones is also there. It's what gives me hope! :)
“Coustillier are meant to jump in for a few quick attacks, and then retreat.”
Love the historical accuracy.
Hit and run cavalry tactics too strong, devs plz nerf
Devs: Fine... have rifled muskets and artillery
Mongols: wtf!
Tartars: dude...
Europe: lol time to suck it Eurasian steppe.
Cossacks: just adapt to the meta dudes
@@planescaped Africa: Buff pls?
I always viewed Flemish Militia as a way to bypass the barracks entirely. One upgrade gets you a fully upgraded champion/pike hybrid unit that can be built at a town center.
At the cost of your whole economy...
@@ArawnOfAnnwn I didn't say it was an amazing trade.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn you barely notice with 3 TC
You have to build at least 5 tc in my opinion to reboom fast
The return of the intro! Hello old friend
Ah the good old long version of the intro
Here you go: czcams.com/video/Edyj-qxOaqc/video.html
I felt like adding the Burgundians made the Joan of Arc campaign missions quite a bit trickier to navigate when you only had finite units. The coustilliers can be pretty dangerous to engage.
A new civ overview, the intro's back, AND he's got a sponsor? It's a good day, people.
Woooooo
Just a sponsor for this video though
@@srbishkrst , I know, but it's still nice to see.
I really like Burgundians, their Flemish Revolution tech works like the Ragnarok god power in Age of Mythology which converts all of the player's Gatherers and Dwarves into Heroes of Ragnarok.
When I play Burgundians, I tend to get double-bit axe as soon as I can - i.e. as soon as I have a lumber camp. I think that it might even be worthwhile to build the lumber camp earlier than most civs would. The tech comes in early enough that it would be hard for an opponent to punish you for it. With it only costing 50 food (and 50 wood, though I don't really consider that a serious consideration since it increases wood-gather rate, and I'm getting it before I actually need the wood for something else), it doesn't really seem to hurt my early game. At worst, getting double-bit axe early would delay feudal age by one vil, and I suspect that it usually won't even do that.
Not sure if it pays it back in dark age but you could also have maybe one less vill on wood gathering food which would justify Dbit axe asap.
As long as the tc isn't idle it isn't much of a setback, you're right.
The Coustillier is great in Hammer and Anvil tactics. the high upfront damage makes them able to do immense damage on a charge and then pull out, while your anvil unit acts to keep the enemy in place or punish them for breaking and pursuing.
Agreed. I like the idea that you have to use a little strategy to get the best of a unit, instead of just mass and throw them at the enemy
Interesting, the one true question is when to use the Revolution at any point in the game. Its a fatal decision.
And damn, Squarespace is everywhere. Congrats on the sponsorship.
A few days ago I played as Burgundians in an online multiplayer game. I had 5 towncenters, was cranking out villagers and had paladins to assist my allies.
I hit Flemish Revolution to make an instant army after I hit my population cap. Suddenly having the largest military in the game allowed me to completely overpower one enemy that we were struggling against. Took some time to get farmers and lumberjacks back to work, but I was a pocket player and had the time to rebuild.
Yay. I love seeint the Overviews back. Now only Poland remains :)
Aah, finally, the intro song is back! Thanks, SOTL.
Finally, long awaited civ overview for Burgundian.
Yeah I've been looking forward to this
It really wouldnt have aged well if he released one in the first 2 weeks. UU would have been in a tier of its own back then, cav mobility that one shots half the units in the game and 3 shots a french cavalier? Nope, not going near that till they're nerfef
So happy to see this! And I’m glad that you were able to get a sponsor!
Loved that SOTL was calmly talking about Flemish Militia being countered my siege as they get massacred by SO's at 11:02
one thing that I don't think is apparent from the video is that the +25% damage applies to attack bonuses as well, so although it looks almost useless for the bombard cannon and cannon galleon, it's quite a big difference
That also means their bombards actually hit harder than Siege Engineer bombards, but lack the +1 range.
I'm very glad that the Economy overview is back. The analysis of each aspect is how good a civ is going with that specific strategy, so Economy might reflect how good the civ is in booming, and that is a important information.
I guess there's a bit of synergy between their unique tech and team bonus. Getting that food income after removing most of your economy to start rebuilding the villager count.
Not really an issue, you will overboom before getting the tech. So you will research it with 3k+ food in the bank, i really dont think 30 food/min make any difference 11
There is no hope under the black sun
The layout of this video is exceptional. Unfortunately the coustillier video is out of date after the changes. I would be nice if SOTL could update the video. Equal resources gives you 9 knights and 11 coustilliers. Lanchester's law comes into play as the initial extra damage used by extra coustilliers will have a snowball effect. Optimally, if 4 attack one knight they can take it out with the 4 initial hits. DPS and damage per minute do not fairly portray fights as fights will only last 10 to 20 seconds.
I just find it weird that the Coustillier uses a fauchard on horseback. That... wouldn't be ideal. >__>
Make more sense if they attacked with a couched lance then switched to a mace. The fauchard was done most likely to make them more visually striking though.
It does kind of bother me logic-wise but I have to admit it looks cool.
Though it doesn't look as ridiculous as Knights with only a sword, or, worse, Cataphracts, just merely tapping infantry with their swords, of all weapons, and mowing them down. You indeed nailed it that Byzantine Cataphracts or Clibanarii irl used maces, and the Parthian model they were based on had two-handed lances, referred to as a contus by the Romans.
Teching into 'Spirit of the Law' gives you a 10% gold discount on Squarespace, at least on paper. In practice it can possibly give you must more than that retrospectively.
the gunpowder bonus also affects the hidden attack bonuses. for example if bombard cannon +200 vs buildings, with this bonus it will have +250
But they dont have siege engineers, so normal FU BBC get +240 against buildings, Burgundians get +250 but -1 range
You kinda missed the big thing about Burgundian Paladin: they hit you 1min earlier than usual, as you can start the upgrade immediatly when hitting imp (as opposed to after finishing chav).
100 seconds is 1m40s
THE INTRO IS BACK YEAH BUUUUDDDYYY!!!!!
So good.
I like how they get a knight aubstitute as their unique unit AND bonuses to their knights, gives you interresting options to play around with. Like the Magyar's Huzsars being a cooler and better hussar, but they also get cheaper hussars.
I can see Flemish Revolution being a tech that you would certainly use to seal the deal for a victory, like a final Screw You moment. Like, imagine you’re already winning, but in doing so the other player was able to fight off most of your units leaving you with small numbers to finish the job of destroying his base. You retreat for now, leaving him to think he can rebuild in peace. But, then he notices a huge army of like maybe 90 to 100 Flemish Militia marching their way to his base and he just barely managed to get a few units out. He already knew he was losing, but not like this.
YES! THE OPENING! I've missed it so. Still excellent playing and thank you for the video as well!
Finally! Been waiting for another civ overview. Always enjoy these
Now that was a classy add read! Straight and to the point while still saying everything that needed to be told to know about the product. And without killing the mood/feel of the video so far! True professional!
Burgundians are my favourite civ so for once I actually knew most of what was in this video, but it's good to get confirmation of what I already suspected in a few areas and the comparison of their cavs to other civs' knights was interesting. I'll also probably end up mixing a few of their unique unit into my armies more often, I didn't realise how good the build time was.
I remember when I first discovered this channel, I thought, "this guy's stuff is really good, but his intro is too long."
Eventually it grew on me and I realized his audience is probably a bunch of nerds like me who aren't in a hurry to be anywhere else anyway, so who cares if it's long. Glad to hear the intro again
So glad to see civ overviews are back!
th relic bonus can be really strong if you look at it saving 5 pop in late game which can lead to army advantage. with 5 relics a teammate needs 8 less farmers for hussar/paladin spam
Omg I was waiting for my favorite new civ to finally get a in depth look
Amazing work like always Spirit
As a casual, mainly vs cpu player of aoe2 I think burgundy is a really fun and different kind of civ
age of mythology did kind of have a similar version of flamish revolution wich was the ragnarok god power for some nordic civs, but it was way superior since it was completely free, the units it transfered into also were hero units and didnt atually block you from building more collectors or midgets, it basically resets your eco instead of commpletely halting it
AOE3's revolution kinda did the same thing the Flemish Revolution does with revolution, turning all your villagers into minutemen, but you couldn't build vilagers after! You had to rescue them from treasures.
Thank you for doing these overviews.
Bulgarians: infantry civ without champions
Burgundians: cavalry civ without bloodlines
Britons: archer civ without thumb ring
What's next? Siege civ without siege engineer? Monk civ without block printing?? Naval civ without galleons???
The closest I can think of to the Monk point is the Slavs without Heresy or Faith but their actual Monks get the rest of the techs plus extra armour from Orthodoxy, or Vikings for the naval civ point with no access to Fire Ships at all.
The siege civs are safe for this round at least, but then again calling them siege civs is kind of an informal designation by us (the AoE community), sooo...
Edit: I was going to point out none of the 'siege civs' had Bombards but it's only really Mongols and Celts upon thinking about it again
Edit 2: The Slavs point was also before I realised DE gave them Faith some time down the line and now Orthodoxy being replaced with Detinets
Poles: Cavalry civ without paladins
@@sowianskiwojownik5973 Plenty of those around though
Booming civilization without Villagers.

Ty Spirit for keeping AoE2DE content!
So nice to see another civ overview!
I'd love to see an Egyptian civ! :D
Mamlukes and Faitmah, eh... the first one sure, but the second one, naaah 🤮
@@guyman1570Don't forget the Ayyubids
so nice to see another civ overview :D
Love these breakdown videos.
Love your aoe2 Vids! Can't wait for more Pol vids!
I love this civ, if it wasn't for the infamous Flemish Revolution i'm sure a lot more people would love it. Interesting build order possibilities, no strong units but instead relying on strong power spikes, interesting Paladin+Handcanoneer late game composition.
I think Flemish Militia really shines in teamfights. Even if you get rushed, if you can build back up your economy near the safety of allies, you can spam villagers and then toggle to a very large amount of a very solid unit, especially at the end of the game. Also the Coustillier is amazing for backing up your teams pushes/defending.
My boy SOTL got a sponsorship! Congratz my man! You deserve all the best!
So good to see the intro again! And nice to see you got urself an sponsor
Yay for civ overview! Yay for intro! Any day with AOE2 content is a good day!
Still making videos in 2022. That's amazing! Your commitment is awesome, Spirit
Glad the intro is back, haven't heard it in a while!
I really enjoy these videos! I would love to see one of the historical comparison too
That classic guitar riff starting up always brings peace to my heart.
Might not be the best thing to hear, but I love falling asleep or just relaxing to your videos. It's got just enough that I can watch it, but not enough that I have to pay 100% attention to understand what's happening.
Dude I will always love your vids they were what got me started on the game
Very much awaited, ty sotl! ❤
5:10 thats negligible knowing that you'll also get +2 attack
Which is nice if your opponent still doesn't have +2
I was just thinking earlier today that I thought the civ overviews would never come again, only to be pleasantly surprised by this
Just here to say congrats on the sponsorship! You really deserve it!
Thanks for having the sponsor at the very end instead of interrupting mid video :)
Amazing!!!! Love your intro bro!
Literally looking for this video (and sad it didn’t exist yet) this morning. I just bought the expansion this morning on Steam sale, and I’m excited to try this civ. Thanks for timely review!
Upvote for the intro return!
And also for the great analysis.
First thing I do when I see you upload is instantly like the video. I love your videos ❤
We are at a point where your intro music triggers positive vibes from pre Corona times when I used to watch your Videos while getting dressed for fun activities or between AoE2 Matches :) keep up the good work and your humorous way to deliver educational AoE Content!
I’m honestly really happy to see you taking a sponsor Spirit. You deserve it, and if this is what it takes to make more/better content, then we’re all in favor!
I wish the developers would implement an outside-the-box thing to every civilisation in the game.
5:05 not to mention other civs get bloodlines on the way up to castle so there's a full minute where you're behind
Very helpful! Thanks a lot again, Mr SoTL.
18:10 that was smooth
Seeing that “starting a new game” and hearing the music put a big dumb smile on my face, love to see it!
New civ overview, return of the intro, and you've got a sponsor?? Congrats x3!!! Great vid!
finally you started using the intro again, brings a lot of soul
The classic INTRO is back! Ohhh hell yeeeeaaa
15:33 question for SOTL: do aztek and indian bonus stacks with burgundians?? Is the food increased with the aztek ally team bonus or the indian ally with theire unique teach sultans??
I will try to answer this and if I am wrong then I am sure SOTL will correct me. The Aztec bonus will stack as for each civilization as each are team bonuses. The Indians would gain a bonus but not a Burgundian teammate. Although an Indian player would be better teaming with a Spanish teammate because of their trade bonus.
The Burgundian bonus works by adding 30 to the resource controlling the relic food trickle rate, which is independent of the relic gold trickle rate. As such, the Aztec and Indian bonuses do not affect the Burgundian team bonus (i.e. the food trickle rate remains at 30 food/relic/minute). I don't know how the Aztec team bonus interacts with Sultans (though I do know that the Aztec relic bonus works by adding 33% to the relic told trickle rate, not by adding a flat amount). So if a Burgundian and Aztec player were on a team, every player on the team would receive 40 gold/relic/minute and 30 food/relic/minute, with Sultans increasing the gold rate to either 43 or 44 gold/relic/minute for the researching player (in theory - I haven't done such a test with Sultans).
the best jingle by far and it's not even close, so dreamyyy :3
Been waiting for this for a year !!! I really wish you had gone into depth on when it's good to pick up dark and feudal eco techs.
A new sponsor! Nice. Excellent video as always.
Finnally the intro came again
Wooop wooop the intro is back!
When I saw the into, I started to sweat and my eyes rolled back in my head as I fell in slow motion to the floor. So glad to see it back
3:06 that perfectly organised village is so soothing to the eye
Burgundians are interesting since they bring a lot of AOE3 concepts (revolution, one time techs) to AOE2.
Civ overview and the intro? You’re too good to us.
The day he drops the Bohemians overview will be the happiest day of my life.
