@@danielwoods3563 I think that’s not entirely accurate. I agree that governing bodies do not set or enforce rematches unless a rematch was a mandatory fight. However, I do believe that the bi-laws, or rules of engagement of governing bodies include language that allows for rematches to outweigh other fights based on historical interest and significance of many rematches. I would be curious to find out what their bi-laws or rules actually say regarding rematches. May have to do some research.

I dont think that anyone is going to beat him, he is the best in the division, & when he eventually moves up to Heavyweight, he is going to do really well, & only the very best fighters will beat him, & that's only if they really, really deserve it.

Jai is not a straight shooter, I don’t know why. I’m saying this because the whole IBF situation developed over time and you can track it back to last August by Googling news articles about IBF sending Briedis vs Opetaia 2 to go to purse bid in September of 2023.
Here’s a heading from an article:
“Jai Opetaia ordered by IBF to face Mairis Briedis in world title rematch”
Don’t take my word for it, google it.
So Opetaia camp refused to fight Briedis and requested a voluntary defense against Thompson (low ranking opponent with soft record, 36th in the world). That’s understandable as Briedis gave Opetaia the hardest fight of his life and left him with a badly broken jaw.
Briedis agreed to step aside as long as he gets to face the winner. So Opetaia elected not to fight Briedis. In step aside situations the boxer who steps aside usually gets paid to do so. I do not know if this was the case.
Briedis keeps training for Opetaia, gets an injury in the camp and when he was offered the Saudi fight on a short notice he obviously declined until he recovered. Briedis had no issues with Opetaia fighting Zorro (another low ranked opponent, 49th in the world) as long as he got the shot at the winner. IBF didn’t care because Zorro was not ranked by them. If you look at Zorro’s record you will see why IBF didn’t find that fight suitable. There may be more politics with sanctioning fees that I am not aware of. But to be clear, Briedis didn’t object Opetaia fighting Zorro. I personally think since Briedis didn’t object, Opetaia should’ve kept the belt, but once again it was IBF’s decision.
Now a disheartening bit comes when Opetaia calls Briedis a pussy after IBF stripped him of his belt. He says that he doesn’t care about belts, just being the best in his division, but it obviously got to him, otherwise why would he curse at a fighter who stepped aside for their first mandated rematch giving him a chance to get back on a horse in an easy voluntary defense then has no issue with Opetaia fighting Zorro for his big payday against an overmatched opponent? Opetaia’s camp was informed why Briedis wouldn’t fight him in December in Saudi. The fight was on short notice and Briedis was recovering from an injury sustained in training camp preparing for Opetaia. Please do not forget that Jai asked for a voluntary defense instead of mandatory rematch against Briedis ordered in September 2023. Jai knows all this and says he doesn’t know what Briedis’s excuse was for not fighting him in December. Briedis was being more than a gentleman in handling this entire situation and once again was ready to fight Opetaia in February until the whole card got moved to 18th of May, and guess what, he is still ready and will come prepared.
Opetaia should get out of his emotions and look at facts. Calling Briedis a pussy when he knows that Briedis offered to fight Opetaia’s friend Justis Huni in Australia at heavyweight to get more buzz for their re match. Huni wanted non of that.
Here’s my take on the upcoming fight. Briedis figured Opetaia out and will continue what he started in the last fight. Opetaia had two easy fights less than 5 rounds total with opponents well outside of top 15. Opetaia’s supporters look at those as some indication of brilliance. I see that he got the job done against well overmatched opponents, but no experience gained, just confidence from being back in the ring. And Jai’s supporters also like to point out Briedis’s age, that’s just hope and wishful thinking that he had slowed, no proof of that until the fight. What we know is that Briedis took all this time to prepare with one opponent in mind?
Anyone discounting Briedis, are you also discounting Beterbiev, who is the same age as Briedis.
Beterbiev will fight against Bivol in June for undisputed at light heavyweight. Is he too old as well?
The interviewer said he believed that Briedis won against Usyk, I agree. In addition I believe that he won against Opetaia. However, Opetaia not being as skilled and strong as Usyk got his jaw broken by an older Briedis.
Anyone who thinks that this will be an easy fight for either fighter is ill informed or biased with a pinch of wishful thinking.
Do not expect a response to your unsubstantiated replies and personal attacks on this comment.
