    Put your headphones on/earbuds in and enjoy the sounds of nature recorded one morning in mid-Spring as I lean against a friend surrounded by our cousins in the woodland of southeastern Pennsylvania. I share my thoughts on some excerpts from what is one of the greatest books ever put together. How fitting to read this book out in nature; I couldn't have timed it any better. And in the spirit of Anarchism: I turned off ads/monetization for this video.

    City life is only a prison if you allow it to be. If you seek change, act. It’s up to each individual to forge their own path in life. No path is easy. Small towns within driving distances of cities feel good to me. Land in those areas is cheaper, you can easily have nature in your back yard, and you can enjoy city life if you feel the need. Variety. Anyway, I wish everyone well.

      Confirmed. I'm a New Yorker, and as expensive as the city is, all you really need to do is drive 8-15 minutes in any direction and the land is dirt cheap.

      It all has to do with population density. After a certain point, i could see it having negative effects on people’s mental state. My cousin lived in a big New England city and was paying insane rents. He’s in a mental hospital now for alcoholism.

    Anarcho Primitivism is an interesting philosophy. I'm anarcho socialist mostly as I don't see any good way to regress society back to a primitive state, or how to maintain that state. So I say we should keep moving forwards rather than looking back
    I find it interesting that most of the problems with society in that book seems to specifically be issues with capitalism. The businessmen, the constant drive for more and more money, jobs, a lack of personal freedom in preference for eternal grinding for money. . .

    • @EphemeralRift
      @EphemeralRift  Před měsícem +2

      The book is more than just anti-capitalist propaganda. I only read half of it, but there's plenty more on various topics, one being health and happiness of people in civilization vs primitive, and not at all related to capitalism.
      Oh and as for your other point about going back to a more primitive lifestyle, I agree. I think we're too far gone. To me, it's getting worse.

    • @TheMorrochben
      @TheMorrochben Před měsícem +1

      @@EphemeralRift Personally I have a bit more hope for the future than that? But its mostly due to current scientific projections that global warming's cost in damages will outpace capitalism's earnings in around two to four decades. At which point the current system will collapse and yeah I'll probably die during the resulting global catastrophe that sends us back into the bronze age but hopefully those people who survive will go on and not make the same mistakes again.

    This is an interesting discussion, but I tend to think terms like "civilization" and "primitive" can obscure our thinking about these issues. Were the hunter-gatherers who built Göbekli Tepe 11,000 years ago civilized or primitive? And David Graeber (an anarchist, fwiw) makes a strong case that people have always organized themselves in all sorts of ways, which makes me wary of arguments that one social arrangement is any more "natural" than another. That said, as a civilized person I love your nature videos!

    Ya, The problem with your argument/suggesting is the same problem I have with Nihilism. I used to think the same as you and a sort of sudo nihilistic way very depressed the usual scenario for people that have this line of thinking,
    So the Issue with it as I've learnt and grow from when I was younger, Is all you are doing is deconstructing the current reality of the situation to its simplest form and then you take some sort of outlandish radical viewpoint Like "Society is cancer and we should return to nature" but when you think about that more than a second... how do you know? in fact, if you look at the facts and figures the quality of life that we live now, It far exceeds the quality of life we lived 1000 years ago,
    It is rather funny too that the types of people who talk like this use the same arguments that someone from the church would make, Both of your arguments follow the same tropes of "well you can't prove that god doesn't exist so you can't say I'm wrong then...." or "Imagine if there wasn't any society, I could just go out hunt for food, build my own home and not have to deal with tax's I would love that.... (how old are you?) oh Im 30 why do you ask? (ya so you wouldn't be loving it cuz you would be dead, and life expectancy back then is like below 30),
    This is literally the truest form of "you won't miss it until it's gone" or "you don't appreciate it while you see it", Well to rap up this I guess rant, Is what you should be focusing on is individuality and your own personal happiness because if you're happy then nothing else matters, You don't need to read a book, you do not need to be an anarchist and you don't need to hide under some sort of belief system to feel some sort of way. Its pointless negativity with no really form of gratification that you don't just have to generate for yourself anyway.

      The life expectancy didn't really work like that you would either very likely not be alive by the age of 20 or be alive by the age of 60. (The life expectancy was to a large degree caused by high child mortality).
      But even if we ignore most of your kids not making it (which is pretty bad thing I think we can agree on that) I would still say there is some tendency to romanticize the life stile of hunter gatherers too much. (Though if you compare them with something like medieval peasants instead of a life in 1st. world country that changes the equation a lot).
      I personally think the ideal life would be some life in nature but still with most of modern tech that relates to medicine. (Not doable with current population density.)

    Especially love hearing you talk about anarcho-primitivism, I'm very much on the socialist into communism / anarchism perspective of things, where the government should be used as a protecter and enabler of autonomy (its really utopic, i get it 😂).
    I hope that after systematic enforcement of autonomy (like paying for healthcare, schooling), we can move to devolution (moving government faculties down to the responsibility of the community). But at the same time the world is too messed up to have some human consciousness shift garbage happen (climate, civil rights, lack of political representation even in "democratic" countries) so its hard not to get depressed.
    Also hearing to you talk about everything's "right to exist" another way to say that might be that "other things have dignity".
    Maybe a primitivist would help free me from any tightness regarding "the way I want things to go" for my utopia in my mind. Thanks for the vids as always ✌️

    Virus is better analogy than a cancer cell when speaking about parasites as no, cancer cells are not organisms. Cancer cells are just that, cells which are skipping apoptosis or programmed cellular death. And these cells are a part of the human organism. But I also think cancer is an excellent analogy if you take it in a different direction: humans are not willing to embrace the living system they are a part of and are clutching on to life, not willing to let go, wanting to live forever and exercise our control.

    "The way things are is better than they were."
    "We have more available to us now than ever."
    "There's no heat lamp in your anarchical ideal."
    I enjoy these anarchy focussed videos because they cement the idea in my noggin that, despite the loud majority's complancency with the world, there are more folks around interested in, and talking about, what I consider freedom.
    It's nice.

      Yeah man, I definitely agree, it would be wayyyyy more tougher living outside since there's so much against us. But living outside is missing in our lives since people still go out and continue to hunt, they go camping. Not to mention, no one really likes to work, both kids and adults (since we are slaves for the people at the top) it shows that modern living is not fulfilling.

      Also I don't know what the solution is, but I know this isn't working. Just look at indigenous people, alot of them are alcoholics and are in jail. They're empty and sad of a life that they have lost in this modern age

    You do you Paul but... If you think that's "deep" it's not, it's as shallow as an edgy teenager's views on society and anarchy. Rejection of civilization and Anarc 10:53 hy are subjects that literally take years to study. And... That's not ASMR, that's "Paul's propaganda for toddlers" and if that's what you wanted to do, great, it's ok. It's just not the ASMR content most of us came here for, at least not what I came here for. I'm out, peace.

      Yeah, you're right, having the coat of arms of Romania as a profile picture is much much deeper than breaking the status quo of the dysfunctional society we are in; nationalism for toddlers, to use an expression you are familiar with.
