An Imperfect Day of Street Photography

- Sometimes I like to just go out for the pure enjoyment of street photography and to practice solely on my observational skills, still taking photos but not really caring if I get anything good or not. That's what this video is all about and hopefully it will give you some ideas for what to look for on your next photo walk and highlight the importance of the process rather than the results.
The camera I used in this video is the Olympus XA2 and film stock, Kodak Gold 200 (not the ideal film stock for the light I ended up having but that's how it goes sometimes). Enjoy!

🔴 I think the only way to improve at street photography is to go out, practice and embrace imperfection, what do you think?

Good to see a photographer in action but try shooting outside London and it becomes a thousand times more difficult.
I do street photography in Newcastle, I try to be invisible and quick but regularly get challenged by people, because someone carrying a camera is unusual.
@@babettesfeast6347 I hear ya, I live in the Cotswolds, it’s very similar in the small town where I live. I made a video about street photography in small or boring places you might want to check out 😊
@@timjamiesonphotos will check it out. Thanks, Lawrence originally from Witney
That's tough, any imperfections on my photo will 90% end up in bin.... Hahahahahaha... That'll be a difficult decision to keep my *imperfect* photo 😆😆😆😆
Voice over please. Reading the writing distracts from watching the interest in the video
Noted! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Totally agree. Still an awesome video though. Thank you for all you hard work and time creating content for us.
@@Shakespeare3977Thank you!
I agree. By the time I've read the caption, I've missed the moment!
Glad someone is finally saying this. For a visual video, having to read at the same time is a no no for me. I don't watch any with subtitles as it's pure frustration, which is a real shame as your vids are amongst the best out there. So yeah, if there's any chance of voiceovers it would be hugely appreciated. 😊
lovely video and I prefer the subtitles. its nice to hear the ambience combined with the soft music and your descritpions because alltogether it gives off a calm vibe that supports the feeling you get from this peaceful day to day moments you capture
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed and liked the music and subtitles - appreciate it 😊
I prefer voiceover. Reading (and translating in my case) takes more time. It's just a matter of comfort. Great video anyway, thanks Tim.
Thanks! I think I’ll do a voice over in the next one 🙏🏻
I love the subtitles and the very quiet and relaxing background music. I felt wonderfully rubbery and calm when I finished watching, like I do, sometimes, when I have been out in the street and got some shots I am happy with. There fewer ideas to process in the video when the word count is limited, as it must be, in subtitles. We can listen a lot faster than we read, which I think sometimes causes stress and overload when watching a video and listening to the audio commentary.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻
My first camera circa 1979! Loved that thing
Awesome! It’s a great little camera 🙏🏻
5:00 Wow! That is a nice picture. I like the life in it and the composition.
Thanks very much! Glad you like it 🙏🏻
I loved this video ❤ Such a great photography and u really like the concept of no talking just the street noises people photography…Great job 👍🫶
Thanks heaps 🙏🏻
I really like your videos, man! Voiceover is better than subtitles
I really like this format with the subtitles and the quiet background music. Actually watching this has helped make up my mind which camera to take out tomorrow. My Chinon P&S.
Ah I’m so happy to hear that, thank you - happy shooting🙏🏻
Such a nice video to watch, reminds me of some of mike chudley's older videos. Subtitles are great, and i love the little bit of analysis for each photo: "nice composition but colours are bland" or "interesting gesture with nice light", etc. Keep making these please!
Thanks heaps! Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻👌🏻
I like this video. Perfection in the imperfection. Capture the moment. Therefore i like your videos. For myself your videos and photos are a great inspiration.
I like the way you tell stories with your videos and photos.
Thank you 🙏 for that.
What a lovely comment! Thank you for that :)
Love this. Prefer the subtitles. Inspiring me to take my Olympus trip out tomorrow :)
Glad to hear it!
Thanks Tim! Nice photo walk 👍👍
Well as a Dutch reading English isn’t going fast enough so for me subtitles only if they add something. So you understand I prefer voiceover.
Sounds and noises of the street are great, soft music is okay too.
Thanks for the feedback! Appreciate that ☺️
I enjoyed the captions - found them less intrusive than a voice-over.
Thanks mate!
Nice video. Always love seeing a good pov of a photo walk
Thanks, Josh! Appreciate that mate 🙏🏻
Enjoyed the video Tim, especially the extreme people watching quote.
Thanks heaps! 🙏🏻
This was excellent.
Too kind! Thanks, Dan 🙏🏻
Thanks for sharing. It's always interesting to see what catches your eye, Tim.
On my last walk with the camera I was making photos of people holding hands. And Tim, it's your fault. 😛
Thanks, Scott! Haha brilliant, happy to hear you’re taking photos of human moments - that’s great 🙏🏻
Nice one mate...I miss the voice overs especially with what was your thought process .overall nice photo walk...flowers remind of some Joel merroywitz works too...
Thanks mate! Appreciate that. Think I’ll return to a voiceover for the next one 🙏🏻
Great video but I would prefer a voiceover as I missed some of the video whilst reading the captions and missed captions whilst watching the video!
Thanks Mark! Appreciate the feedback, I thought the subtitles might be a little fast in this one, will re-think for next time! 🙏🏻
I thought I would reach out just to say Hi and build a bridge.
I also think your videos are much better when you use narration. You have a great voice, use it more!
@@ElementalCoreThanks mate! Appreciate that. I was planning to do a voice over on this one but wanted to get the video out today and did the subtitles in the airport haha - next one will have narration! 🙏🏻
Yo! That's awesome! Great composition and colors! I love doing some film simulations in LR, but.. film is film and can't really be replicated. I thought the greenish tint would be Kodak 250D 5207, but I didn't realize it was actually Kodak Gold.
Thanks so much dude. I've been working on my LR presets for so long and feel like I'm getting closer to a film-like look in colour but still a while off releasing them. But you're right, nothing compares to real film - it's just tooo expensive!
Voice over I think is better, so you can enjoy the images without having to read the text. Great images as always, especially the man painting with the coloured gloves and his shadow.
Thank you!!
When did you filmed this?? Last weekend I visited London for the first time, and I had a supermarket meal at that same square where the video starts, what a coincidence!
Oh nice! What did you think of London? I filmed this quite a long time ago now, only just got round to making the video!
some great shots but sorry I did not like the sub titles I spent too much time reading and not taking in the images as they pop up , made the video hectic in a way , loving all your other videos . Pete Western Australia
6.21 is Trinny Woodall and her daughter.
Ah thanks! Just looked her up, knew it was someone from TV!
You’re welcome! It was a good spot!
I guess voice over is your main attraction, while the text can be kept short for comments on photos
Thanks!
Great video; one of your best…. Captions so distracting….. But voiceover not needed either! Amazing work….. Keep going! C.
Thank you, Chris!! 🙏🏻
I prefer voiceover
Thanks!
Hate subtitles, they take my attention away from the scene and I end up missing things!
I used analogue 'back in the day' but don't have the time for it now, (not to mention more expensive than reusable memory cards!), I'm too impatient.
I liked the street artist & 'eye', it had the greatest impact for me.
Must get up to London sometime, I tend to stop at Oxford! 😁
Thanks for the feedback! Oxford is a fun city, it can’t beat London :)
Prefer voice overs as miss most of the images reading the subtitles which by the way can be only partly read if they are long. Enjoyed the video though, thanks.
Thank you!
Others have said it all - voice over please (although text is OK on the stills) and Trinny Woodhall.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Voiceover. I can listen then look better than I can read and look
Thanks for the feedback! 🙏🏻
For me, subtitles no. I was focusing my attention on the words. I wasn’t watching the scene you presented and what was in front of me. After reading your copy in the foreground I had to reapply my attention to the subjects in the background. The effect of the subtitles was distracting. I also process information faster when I hear it than when I read it.
Street photography is all about failure. When I go out for a walk with the camera only 2-5% of the images are any good. Another way to say that is 95-98% of my images are failures. That isn’t bad. What do I do with my failures? I see a blue structure and a man painting the structure red. Good attention to detail. I take the picture. I’m too far away. Put that image into the 95-98% category. I look at the image and try to analyze it. I’m too far away. My subject is too small in the frame. The contrast of the blue and red isn’t obvious. Solutions. Next time get closer to my subject. Use a longer lens. Take multiple images and play with the exposure triangle. Move on. Do better next time.

Thanks, Marty! :)
Sorry but I don’t like subtitles as I’m looking at them and missing your photos
Thanks for the feedback!
I liked the video but didn't care for the subtitles.
Thank you!
Subtitles - no. Prefer a voiceover and NO muzak.
Cheers :)
