    I have been a photographer for about 20 years, I have an AAS in Photographic Imaging Technology, started on color both negative and reversal, tried some b/w then switched to digital in college,. For a couple years I was shooting Live performance for a local music venue. I loved it and the bands loved the photos as did the club. Unfortunately just when I was discovering my style , and my work was starting to get noticed, I was the victim of identity theft (My photo business was my name of course) and I was forced to totally rebrand myself. Then a few months later the club went under. Being in a small town it was the only venue for local and regional musicians. After that I drifted back to film and started to concentrate on B?W film so I could go Old School and develop my own film and make prints. Over a decade later I was able to set up my darkroom. Ever since the club shut down I have been trying to rediscover my style and I believe I have found something that I will really enjoy going out shooting a lot to zero in on storytelling, night streets, and playing with long exposures, shutter drag, etc. and have FUN. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! I wish I could download it. Gonna be watching this one more than twice!!

    Photography is a CREATIVE PROCESS, many people don’t even understand that, no one has to wait to move to a big city with abundant activity in order to make great art… but many people do and that’s why they never grow as an artist. Work with what you have at hand, put your hard work and enjoy the results of your creativity!

    Happy New Year Tim! Thanks for another instructive but entertaining video! Although I knew about the curiosity gap beforehand, you comprehensibly have demonstrated how much more powerful (here's the word again ;-) this concept works at night, which is missing in all other videos I have seen on this topic. What I really appreciate in this kind of your videos is your ability to come straight to the point without waffling but in a humorous way of presentation.

    LOVE JKJ. Would love to have his sleepless book. It is over $100. Too rich for my wallet.
    I don’t do a lot of night photography. Yes, being in a city helps. Downtown Seattle at night is scary. Besides buses, there virtually are no cars on the road. The homeless and people with psychiatric problems (I was a psych nurse for 30 years. I know my people) dominate the streets. I don’t feel safe alone on the street. In addition, the last bus leaves at 2030. It is bad news missing that bus.
    I have started doing intentional camera movement. ICM works well at night with the longer shutter speed. At least at night I don’t have to use a ND filter.

    Valid points well illustrated, Tim. Attention-getting thumbnail, as well. Vid hints you’ve spent lots of time in red light districts😊. Imperfection at night is a good carry over from same during the day - Wabi-Sabi genre in photography. Nailing exposure and mixed light white balance can be a challenge, IMO; wish the vid had addressed these further.
    “Elephant in the room” IMO is personal safety when out and about at night, especially at less crowded places/hours in urban areas.
    In less populated venues there’s astro photography, intentional camera movement, light painting, and hunting for light islands like fuel stations and lonely streets w/a few isolated lamps. Less “powerful” perhaps😊, few people, not always “street” but doable.
    Cheers!

      Thanks for the comment as always mate! Who doesn’t like to start their evening in the red light district? 😂
      Tried to keep this video concise and not include too much to process, have seen safety and other night photo techniques covered a lot in other CZcams videos but I know what you mean there! It’s certainly a genre all to itself with everything that comes along with that!

    Hi Tim, this is only the first video of yours that I've watched. I clicked on it as I've been interested in night photography, and I resonate with it so much, especially when you mention photos that show emotion that don't have to be perfect. I clicked on the video to learn more about night photography, and I saw that you're based in Cheltenham where I live too! (I didn't even know this was a thing on youtube), and also you're a fellow Fujifilm shooter!! I've only been doing photography now as a hobby for the past 6 months or so, I've always been interested ever since I was a kid, but now that I'm working I've got myself an XT3 that I love to bits. I'd love to maybe catch up over coffee, or do some shoots / photo walks together if you would do that kind of thing. I wouldn't normally write a message like this but i thought I'd put that out there cause why not!

    Excellent advice with some really lovely examples. I'm a keen night photographer and use a lot of the techniques or ideas you mention here, but one to add is the potential for great images that really engage the viewer's curiosity by using reflections from windows or cars, particularly as a way of creating multiple layers.

    2:15 in two words Wabi-Sabi, the perfection of impefection a form of Yin & Yang in photography. The idea goes right back to Japanese wood cuts from 19th Century and earlier pottery, this also applies to phographic images from many Japanese photographers dated from around the 1960s, think of PROVOKE magazine, the images were either incomplete or distorted in some way either by taking the shot or post work in the darkroom.

    • @timjamiesonphotos
      @timjamiesonphotos  Před 5 měsíci

    Do you approach people for permissions after you’ve taken photos of them? Or are they “fair game” if they are in a public space? I have a lot of night shots that include people but there was either no way to get permission from everyone in a shot, or got back to find someone afterwards. For example I’ve got a great photo of a man selling ice cream from one of those portable booths in New York City. I don’t know whether I can publish it without having gotten the man’s permission, and if I blur his face it would wreck the photo.

    • @timjamiesonphotos

      I would take some photos anyway, just to see if they came out (like if there was enough light, etc., or to fiddle with camera settings). You can always trash the photos later. There have also been a lot of times when I’ve discovered pieces of a photo that I didn’t really notice when I took the shot, but ended up really liking in a crop. Just a thought.
