It was and for good reason.
I'm old enough to have had the pleasure of watching him from UNC to Washington. I saw his career in its entirety. And let me tell ya, he was the "1" guy hardly ANYONE ever talked trash to, because they knew that if they did, they'd get embarrassed that night.
And he'd go out of his way to make sure YOU KNEW that he was going to embarrass and humiliate you for it. And there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that they could do about it 😆
Younger fans (i.e., lebron fanboys) love bringing up Bird and Isiah and try to act as if neither were afraid of him.
But Bird didn't call him God, disguised as Michael Jordan for nothing. The Bad Boys didn't create a literal set of defensive rules/principles to physically hurt him for nothing.
No, they both said/did these things because there was a certain level of reservation that one had when facing him. And everybody in the league at that time knew it...

I think the other players having respect for his game is why they called him black jesus and the fear factor came from opposing teams not wanting him to go for 50 cause they would have to deal with it all game and the thing about jordan was he had alot of energy to play elite on the offense side and then have that same energy for the defensive side. This was especially true his pre 1st retirement.

These are all great points if I could add one. If you watch the way that Michael Jordan played especially in the 90’s unlike many other players since, the way he moved on the court and his moves were so decisive, demoralizing and efficient. When he’s already racked up 40 on you and he keeps pouring in more points and every move and movement is like that it takes the air out of the building and confidence away from the opposing team.
Nobody really care what Lebron fan think.

Based on what Shaq said, the fear of Jordan was moreso being put on a highlight reel or poster. Shaq was afraid of MJ dunking on him.
Notice how you react to so many videos of Jordan dropping 60 points on a player that talked trash? This is what they are terrified of. And its not just that Jordan scores on regular jumpshots. He spins around, throws the ball backwards, and it still scores.
ppl didnt FEAR him like he was a hitman or thug or even physically feared him. im sure opposing bigs and players feared playing Shaq or the KNicks or Karl Malone/Charles Barkley or the Bad Boy Pistons, but not Jordan. Kerr is a clown. What ppl REALLY felt was a sense of HOPELESSNESS. like it was IMPOSSIBLE to BEAT Jordan.. maybe some players were nervous to get embarrassed though. Jordan is the devil

Lots of players are famous just for being embarrassed by MJ. Shaq didnt want to be the star of a documentary called: "the day Shaq dared to step on the same court as MJ." Thats what many of these type of videos are.
