Beasthorn retrievable redirect for SRS tree climbing

  • Dan demonstrates a great retrievable redirect for SRS (stationary rope system) / SRT (Single rope technique) that was thought up by Joe Drinkhorn. This technique allows the climber to redirect around a limb with the ability to pull out the redirect from anywhere in the tree that is safe to lanyard in, or on the ground. The redirect itself takes no additional hardware, just a carabiner clipped to the rope to retrieve the redirect.

I know most aren't replying to youtube comments but I've gotta try- can you possibly explain to me how this is superior to simply tossing your rope over the new tie-in-point/TIP and redirecting "the simple way"? I've watched the video multiple times, have gone into the canopy in-between those times, am simply not getting it (it's not that I'm disagreeing with it, I mean I do disagree but it's that I literally don't "get" what the purported benefit of this approach is!)
The con's are obvious- time spent setting up knots, weaker line both from the knotting and from the decreased working-rope (once you've tied that knot, you only have from you to the knot for shock-absorption, with 'natural/normal' redirects the rope's entire length to the basal anchoring is sharing your load)
I wish I could write what the "pro's" are for this method so am hoping you may reply to tell me, sure I may disagree or they may not be for me but I'd really like to at least understand it, to me this is like someone saying "so you take a bight of rope & make a knot somewhere on the line" - it's random&doesn't make-sense w/o a clear benefit, that's how this "make knots at your new TIP instead of simply running the line over it" approach/method is coming-across to me :( I love this series so I know that I've gotta be missing something, and I do tons of redirects I'm "the monkey-type" when it comes to running around a canopy so I'm making new TIP's all over on most trees so if there's a better way I want-in on it LOL but the ease of simply running the rope as-normal through the new TIP(s) (or their friction-savers if using them) seems to be superior to any system that'd "turn-off" the shock-absorption you'd otherwise have gotten from the standing-end of rope (and leave you with a

Derek Smith hi Derek, hope your well. I have to admit I can’t fully reply to the questions in your comment fully as there is a lot going on from different angles......but
There are many options and situations that you could employ re-directs and they can be deemed as a good option depending on your climbing style, the level at which you plan your route through the tree, the tree species, the angle of stem/branch /growth ,forces, your experience, ability to pre tension with previous redirects, where your current plan takes you after the re-direct employed, along with preferences for gear happy or minimalist as this re-direct is and really that’s all I was referring too.... Hope this helps 🤷🏻‍♂️🤔👍 all the best

@@dereksmith4791 you don't have to pull the whole tale end of the rope up and over the branch. That's the main benefit. After pulling ropes for hours, making 3 simple knots will definitely be a lifesaver on forearms.

If you tie the very end of your tail to the carabiner, it only takes twice as much rope instead of thrice. You do sacrifice some versatility, as you lose the choice to pull your rope out of the 'biner if you ever needed to, but I don't know why you'd need to unless you needed to get out of the tree quickly and it turned out your rope was too short to reach the ground. In that situation, the video method would be better, but I feel like that's easily avoided.

Nice vid, I've been doing something similar but with a macramé knot instead of the CEM which you are using. I think the CEM is better though because each half hitch forms a backup, if one pops then the others still hold, whereas with the macramé the whole thing would unravel. Good to see someone else applying these canyoneering knots to tree climbing SRT work!
One safety point which occurred to me - it's worth being careful tensioning too much to share the load with the main tie in point, especially on windy days. If the 2 limbs move independently from each other there's a risk the rope between them would be pulled and the knot could be released. I see your logic in sharing the load but this could also be a safety concern.
Great vid though, thanks for sharing!

I can see your thinking on the thought of a windy day, when the redirect is under body weight I can't se there being movement, once partially or fully unweighted maybe, make a long bite, that could probably mitigate the issue

    • @daviddobedoe
      @daviddobedoe Před 5 lety +1

@@ClimbingArborist I enjoy the videos. I think the other possible problem with having the rope tight between redirects / rebelays is that if the tree is moving in the wind the loads on the rope could be very big. LANTRA training people have had a number of reports of unexplained rope damage from people rebelaying with an Italian hitch.

Additional ways of retrieving it include tying your tail to the retrieval carabiner this requires only two lengths of rope.
Also if you have tied your canopy anchor with a retrieval line to the ground, either the alpine buttery method or the cambium saver method. The retrieval line can be used to trip the redirect. This can be performed by you in the tree, if you can reach the line (or by a groundsman).
There is no limit to the number of these redirects that can be stacked one after the other and still all be retrieved in succession.
When you have your line weighted it bites down and prevents retrieval. This is important to note as if the line is unweighted and struck by eg a felled limb or top this could drag out the line and trip the retrivable redirect unexpectedly.
I've noticed too much friction on the line that runs from your redirect to your canopy anchor can cause issues with retrieval. Keep it straight and friction free.
Climb safe when using any new technique and practice low and slow.

I wonder how you feel about Richard Mumford's "M redirect" described in a video he did (I have not tried it yet). All he does is loop a bight over the new limb, and clip it into his harness. This effectively converts an SRT system into a Ddrt system while the redirect is active, so there is rope movement over the new limb. It uses extra rope (>3X) for that segment, so you need to be sure you have enough to reach ground. To release you just disconnect that same bight from your harness and pull the main line. What I like about his M redirect is the fact that there is no release rope or extra knots or extra pulleys that could get snagged or accidentally pulled.

@Climbing Arborist another great video mate! Sorry I missed the original posting. Glad you pointed it out here. I've been thinking about getting the eject but despise gear for the sake of
A couple points comparing the super fish and Beasthorn.
I think saying it's the least gear intensive is a bit misleading. Granted, it's a friction saver, and you need one of those in your kit anyway. The BH doesn't even require a carabiner unless you plan to use a belly to retrieve. A bowline in the bar of the clove or half hitches is enough to make the retrieval work.
nough to make the retrieval work.
I imagine that the superfish is way more reliable than mine though.
The point of choking the spar is good one that most retrievable redirects fail to address. At first the BH seems to as well. People forget that they can double wrap the bite around a spar or stem to effectively redirect anywhere they want.
Please don't take any of this any disrespect. I'm not always sure how I come off in writing. I've been a viewer of yours for 8 years now. Your videos literally helped launch my career first as a hobby recreational tree climber just getting g into trees and then again a year later when I found a job as a tree worker beginning to climb for my career. Keep up the good work man. Glad to see new innovative ideas are still out there and people are willing and interested in sharing them.

Hey Dan, I've learned a ton from your vids so thanks. I'm interested by this redirect as I WANT one that will release if its tie-in-point fails. Specifically I need to top and chunk two leaner oaks hung on each other near a target with my primary climbing line thrown through a nearby tree crotch a bit above the top cuts I'll ultimately make. I would spur up the higher of the two leaners, tie this redirect then descend to work the other top. The stems won't fail but if they DID fail, would this redirect release if I use just one hitch?

Not bad Daniel, but it requires 3 times the length of rope. There's another option that only uses twice the length of line, and automatically shares the load. 1: Create a bight of rope just long enough to go around the redirect limb. 2: Pass the bight of rope around the branch, and through a twist in the standing part. 3: Insert the tail of your line through the bight, dress and set. I may have to demonstrate. Your videos are great!

Why are you wanting to add **any** knots at a new tie-in-point/TIP? I'm new but do have scores of hours running around canopies & setting tons of redirects, just yesterday I must've had 3-5 new TIP's on an Oak canopy I was working a section of, I simply take the very-end/tip of my climbing rope (which I always keep knotted to some carabiner on my harness) and start feeding it over/around/etc the new TIP, once it's mostly-there and my friction-hitch is getting tight I verify I'm lanyarded-in securely, I un-clip the friction hitch from my belt (leaving it on the climbing line), and finish pulling the line through its new TIP, then I simply re-clip my friction-hitch to my belt and onward I go!
I'd love to know what the purported benefits to this technique are, have watched the video twice and all I can see are the downsides (time spent knotting stuff up, having to un-do knots if the retrieval is an unusual/PITA one which is super common in my area unfortunately, and maybe most-importantly is the weakening of the system IE that, on your new knotted-up TIP, you're not only going to be clipped to a line that's terminating as a knot but you also only have a small leg of line that'll take/absorb shock if you were to fall, whereas with my method you'd be getting so much more shock-absorption from the entire length of rope!)
Just don't get it, the Con's are obvious so there's gotta be a good reason to accept them but I just cannot figure it out as I KNOW that I can simply keep moving my rope up&over new crotches to keep setting new TIP's, that's simple & obvious and it works GREAT, this idea of putting knots in it would certainly 'work' but I just cannot figure-out what the supposed benefits are here (ie I don't disagree with the concept so much as I just don't get what the point would be, to me it sounds as valid as someone suggesting I add extra knots to the mid-section of my basal anchor IE it just sounds utterly pointless insofar as benefits yet clearly has drawbacks of time & weaker rope...those drawbacks require a good reason and I can't figure out what the reason is supposed to be here!
Thanks for any insight you can provide me! Climb safely & productively :D

Hi Dan, 1st-ly thanks a ton for the great series (and the introduction to BM rope, I am in LOVE with my yale Blue Moon 11.7, 1st splice was a failure but will get there soon I know it ;D ), if I weren't still new enough to this I'd be **too-embarrassed** to even post/ask this but.....why do all of what you're doing in this video instead of simply re-directing the line **AS-IS**? I'm new but I've been cruising-through canopies quite a lot and am re-directing all over and the ONLY complaint/handicap I could say is that, when I want a new tie-in-point/TIP once in-canopy, way too-often I'm left with the "gee it'd be nice if I had my fiberglass extension-pole" circumstance where I'm able to throw my line over the new TIP but not able to get the tail that I'd need (which isn't what you're trying to solve here of course, am just saying!) But for redirecting through a canopy I'm just moving my line with me, every time my TIP is restraining me I simply move it along with me (lanyarded-in while doing so....most of the time ROFL, obviously moronic to 'go free' although I don't want to lie by saying I've never done so..), no knots / hitches on it makes tensioning very simple **as well as** ensuring more "rope for shock-absorption" because with your system here, once you've tied that knot, if you took a fall onto that rope you *only* have the shock-absorption of the rope **from the new TIP** instead of all the way to the basal anchor (which my way / the generic/simple way keeps!), have watched the video twice now and am just feeling so damn stupid because it's not that I just think "your method here is unnecessary" it's that I'm not even able to 'devil's advocate' myself into **why** you'd be doing this in the first place and I'm hoping to understand better, for me the idea of putting a knot into a redirected TIP seems mad & only the type of thing that'd be done with good reason and I'm stuck watching this video unable to see what benefit(s) you're suggesting that this method does that *isn't* achieved by simply tossing the working-leg of rope over the new TIP and re-connecting yourself to it? (I should note that I'll often take the working-leg's tail and do an overhand knot to affix it to some carabiner on my belt, to make it easier to feed the line through when doing multiple redirects, heck just writing that makes me ponder how 'restrictive' this type of knots&carabiners approach you're presenting could be, I know it's small/minutiae but that does make a difference when it's regarding our overall-approach to maneuvering a canopy, just yesterday I was working a medium canopy, incredibly densely-ramified canopy that was covered in vines, at any rate I had to keep moving my TIP and doing so my way makes it "an afterthought" I mean I simply verify my lanyard is secured and I unclip from my prusik[still haven't used my epicord after months LOL, my cheap lil prusik loops - 2 at a time every climb - let me go up&down with the ease most seem to need a Wrench for, but then again I'm absurdly small so I'm not loading a friction hitch like most do], drag the running/working leg of line up&over the new limb *with friction-hitch* still on it, then clip back into the hitch and *bam* my new TIP is up & secure, I lean-into it a lot to get it tensioned properly & then continue on with my work.....when I look-back at that canopy from yesterday, if I'd been making knots the whole way on every redirect, there's 0% chance I could've pulled the rope from the ground once done, the vines & tight-crotches already necessitated nearly 10min + ladder + fiberglass extension-pole to retrieve the line, if there were knots or *any* additional friction up there there's simply no way it'd have slid-out from 4 maybe 5 redirects (I should note that I "unloaded" the weight from the redirects as I was reversing out of the tree & beginning my *climb* down the trunk, if I'd descended down the working-leg I'd have left all the redirects 'loaded' and there's no way I'd have been able to pull it from the ground so I simply worked-around that by climbing-down[not descending my working-leg of rope] to save myself from having to manually un-do all the redirects but gosh if they were all knotted that's just *that much more* I'd have to worry about / deal with when setting-up & breaking-down, hell I've even been timing myself on everything from the time it takes from "start" to fully in-truck w/gear, the time it takes from getting on-site to being in-canopy, & the time it takes from last action in-canopy til I've got my blue moon wrapped back up - every second/minute up there counts, just like every pound does, if I'm to make knots & install hardware at each TIP I'd have to have good reason for doing so and in rewatching this video I don't see any benefits depite the obvious drawbacks of time, of less working-rope to absorb shocks, but just cannot see what benefit I'm purportedly going to get by tying-off all my redirects instead of "leaving them natural"[lol I was totally anal about false-crotches/friction-savers off the bat but - thanks to you again!- this Blue Moon is such a beast of a rope, hell I couldn't put much of a dent into the covering with a new *utility blade* - I no longer see much use for them on this rope, maybe it's because I'm in FL where it's currently rainy-season IE the bark could be softer on-average here which, with my light-weight, could be the reason I'm whipping that rope around the way I do and the stuff still looks like-new!!!
Sorry so long I hope I was able to get the point across it's hard to put actions-to-text sometimes, I really "want" to find a new trick for making my redirects better but, aside from using a friction-saver in-place-of a natural crotch, I simply can't fathom a way of improving it...but your video here purportedly does so, so I'm eager to know what I'm missing, what benefit(s) I get from knotting-up a TIP that I wouldn't get by simply dropping my rope over & continuing onward through the canopy :)

    • @ClimbingArborist
      @ClimbingArborist  Před 4 lety

Wow, that was the longest comment I've ever read!
The reason I show this technique is because there are times on occasion when for some reason you can't climb and simply drop through a fork. I don't use this techniques often, quite rare actually, but when I do the reason is because I can't drop through a fork to do a natural redirect

So I'm on convinced. If for whatever reason you load that rope between your tie in point and the redirect you could snatch out your redirect unintentionally....say a branch falls on it or if something youd rigged went wrong and the rigging rope catches it and loadd it, it could whip out your redirect that's been demonstrated in this video. (Or have I miss under stood....I think not!)

This wont work with a roperunner/pro. The instructions show that having the tail hung up like that is not safe. Youd have to tie the end of your rope to the carabiner or have your groundy pull at your base tie. Which brings up another concern. What if something hits the run of rope between your base tie and the redirect? Not trying to e a dick or sound cool. Just legit questions I have as I'm new to this srt stuff. Thank you for all the informative videos brother slay safe

At 8:50 why are you attaching to a little twig instead of that medium sized (i'd guess 7") branch? I don't get it.
At 7:50... why not just bring a throw line up with you, throw that sucker over that 7 foot gap you are climbing, and then do whatever you want with it.

It’s a good technique. It’s definitely not idiot proof, I can see some morons pulling on the tail to ascend because it runs similar to the way an srt 3:1 is set up.
