- Hold on tight, because with a stabilised camera shot and a pair of sunglasses, you're about to see a video that works in both 2D and 3D at the same time. The technique's called the Pulfrich Effect, and this is how it works.

“If you’re holding your phone in bed you look ridiculous”
Says the guy who is literally spinning around in a park
holding phone in bed while holding sunglasses in front of only one eye sounds to me a bit ridiculous.
I would rather know the meaning of the universe and everything in it and spin around for 3 minutes then lay in bed with sunglasses
But here we are
@@humanhuman5024 are you trying to imply Tom knows the meaning of the universe and everything in it?...

I recall using those glasses on different TV shows and when I happened to watch something filmed inside a train and the moving background through the window looked amazingly 3D!

I wanted to check this effect, but I don't wear sunglasses and neither have one. I've been looking what can I use instead and a black dense comb has worked great :D
I didn't realize this monitor is polarized. When I tried shifting the one sunglass 'lens' to the side or vertically the video went from almost full brightness, to hardly visible. I wonder how many displays have this effect.

I love how Tom celebrates after getting it in one shot (and does it for other vids, too).
I work in 3D stereo conversion and sometimes we'll force that frame offset in one eye -- it's called a temporal offset! It only works in panning shots just like you covered, but whenever there's an object that moves outside the smoothness of the pan such as a character or vehicle moving about, or even you waving your arms while you talk, it'll break the effect in that one spot and look kinda wonky.
Another cool thing is the more you offset that one eye by (say, 5 frames instead of just the one) the more pronounced the effect becomes.

This dude and his excitement for doing the videos in "ONE TAKE!!!!!"
Yea lmao
There's a CZcamsr called Lindybeige creating lots of historical content and most of his videos are in one take... Alot of his videos are also at least half an hour long. And I have to say that I really prefer those one take videos. Videos with alot of jump cuts (sometimes in the very same sentence) are very exhausting and sometimes annoying to watch for me.
@@SinginVampireBlog that seems like a you-problem to me. Jumps and cuts really don't affect me. These cuts are made to edit out mistakes or unproper or unsatisfied footage made by the director or the person making the video. Doing a video in one take means the video is flawless and do not require cuts hence the sense of satisfaction behind it. Not meant for thr viewers to get tipsy about it. Sure there are various people that are specifically doing videos only in One Take for the fun of it or it's a thing they do like the person you mentioned. But if you're only watching because you don't like cuts. You're missing out on a whole lot of other great videos out there. Also this is just a joke and I spend too much time writing this. My point still stands and does not at the same time. I'll stop now.
@@rallygozzy9206 haha I know that it's a personal preference and usually it doesn't affect me that much, it's just that I cannot watch too many of those videos at a time. The less cuts the more I can watch in one go. And usually it isn't that bad but sometimes when people do 3 to 4 cuts in one sentence it becomes rediculous to me. But overall I'm glad that both kinds of video exist. I just like one better :)
How did I think the exact same thing before this???

Thanks for spinning the camera angle like that throughout the whole video. I've always enjoyed throwing up.
My father has double vision. He has had a successful life, the only time he sees one image is when we go to see a 3D movie. It doesn’t matter what movie we see he always leaves with a smile on his face. I can’t imagine having to images constantly. He has had many surgeries on his eyes as a child but they were unable to correct his vision. He has little to no depth perception so he relies on shadow and perspective. Surprisingly, He was a warrant officer in the army and used to pilot a 300 ft ship. He was a lapidary and a really good one too, he still is. He donated specimens to the Museum of natural history way before I was born and we have pictures of his work on display. He was told that life would be almost impossible for him. But he learned to adapt, I ask him occasionally if his double vision is changing. He says no but he describes double vision as seeing a second image of what is really there, but it is almost like a ghost. I’m very proud of how much my dad has overcome and achieved, but he doesn’t see his vision as a hindrance since he doesn’t remember a time when he had single vision. I always am wondering how to turn regular videos into 3D videos so he can but on the 3D glasses you get from the movies and see normal. It truly incredible how my father has been able to prosper in his life! I’m very proud of him!

I didn't see the 3D Effect but I am Dizzy as hell right now
Pause the video. take off your glasses. You can see the image is a bit distorted, then put your glasses back on. you should be able to see clear & sharp image, free from distortion and video free from dizziness. Cheers!
Also, make sure you put the glasses on the right eye (edit - i meant the correct eye, which is in this case in fact the eye on the right). Otherwise the 3d effect will work the other way around, pushing the objects in the background to the front. Your brain will then quickly reject this because it doesn't make sense, realize something is going wrong with your vision (which will not be helped by the spining camera, which causes your vision to be misaligned with your balance senses), assume it is because of some kind of toxin, and attempt to eject said toxin from your body, probably using the same path it would have come in through.

Tom Scott I notice an illusory effect in that the contrast between the blurry moving background and Tom’s at-times perfectly-in-focus frames, there’s another 3D-ish illusion. No glasses. Tom feels separated from the surroundings just enough that there’s an illusion on its own.
I’ll still have to find some glasses, but cool trick!
