  • In this video I’ll show you how to adjust your throttle valve cable and maybe resolve some shifting issues you might have.
After adjusting the cable we take a little test drive.

Awesome video!! Just bored out my throttle body to 60mm and was having trouble with the transmission shifting way early and idling high (1995 zj and it's never done either before today) so I was playing with the TPS and shaft alignment but to no avail. Your video popped up on my feed thank God and I went out and tried the cable adjustment and it works great!! Thanks for the valuable info and I hope you're doing well.

@DF Outdoors. Hi Df, Your Jeep shifts great according to what I could hear. Now with my 1993 XJ w/AW4 Auto Trans, 4x4 that I bought last August, the seller who with his father makes 2-3 trips a year to Colorado Springs, Colorado specifically looking for Jeeps to bring back to Michigan. Of course I did pay a higher retail price for it, it has zero rust. I did noticed that the engine had been rebuilt and with all new bolts on it, brand new exhaust manifold.
***At any rate, although I believe that the trans was taken care of, the shift is hard & it winds out at 2100 to 2200 RPM's before the ''Up-Shift''. You mentioned a switch on the dash that allows 2 choices for the trans shift. lol mine must be in aggressive & even though there is a switch on the dashboard, first I need to replace either a burned out fuse, or check the wiring on it.
Now I did make the adjustment that you did but I never pressed on the accelerator pedal to lock it at the new position. So with that said, if I do manage to adjust the shifting but it still variates going from the normal shift back to the current shift pattern, could it possible be a shift solenoid issue? Great video DF, thanks for posting it, M.D. (Dan)

Hey! Glad you found the video helpful. Another culprit with shifting issuers can be your throttle position sensor (TPS). It’s mounted directly to the throttle body. When they start to go bad or fail they can make the Jeep shift at all kinds of crazy rpms.
If you decide to replace your TPS, I highly recommend buying a genuine mopar replacement part. The off-brand ones from auto-parts stores aren’t built as well and don’t last as long. Thanks for watching my video!

@@dfoutdoors3623 Boy DF, I had heard that before but it didn't even register in my head this morning. Thanks for that information. And yes I will be buying that part in the Mopar Brand. I even went that route for the Neutral Safety Switch. It can be a real hassle to have to change it when it's cold or wet outside when those off-brand units fail, so I did go with OEM parts. Your XJ looks good btw. Thanks for replying to my question. lol expect 100's of questions on this matter once the weather breaks. Thanks again, Dan

@@dfoutdoors3623 Hi DF, boy it certainly works better if ya remember to press the pedal down after you made the cable adjustment under the hood lol...The other thing I had forgot was the crazy wondering I have with the steering. After the previous owner added the 3'' lift, he evidentially forgot to replace some of the parts to match the lift. Since he also put on some really Aggressive Tires on it to make it more of an Off-Road Jeep, with that Off-Road Look, I'll either swoop out the Tires & put the original set of the 15'' Tires & Rims, or replace these Gas Hog Tires & get a set of Michelin's so I can keep most of the height but have a normal ride that is more comfortable... Plus Better MPG will make it an affordable daily drive vehicle....

My '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 shifted down from overdrive coming home last night and got worse, not shifting down into 1st gear. Then this morning I took it for a drive like I normally do starting out and it had very hard times shifting past 2nd gear but would. Then after a few more test drives it would not even shift into R, D, 2 or 1!!! The transmission just doesn't do anything besides park and Neutral. Any ideas? Thank you.

The method I demonstrated in the video is exactly how the factory service manuals says to do it. Doing it this way should cause no problems. If you have weird transmission problems, there are many things that could cause it. For example a bad tps, old or dirty fluid, clogged filter, etc.

Did you replace the tps with an original mopar part? Some of the aftermarket ones aren’t very good.
Check your transmission fluid level. It may even be worth doing a drain and fill of the transmission. How I do it is drain out the transmission until it stops dripping, then measure how many quarts came out and put that much new fluid back in. Repeat the process every 200 miles until you’ve replaced about 14ish quarts.
