Hidden Campsites of Red River Gorge, Episode 2: The Indian Staircase Area

  • This video documents over a dozen campsites along several different trails that are near Adena Arch, Indian Arch, the Indian Staircase, and other nearby landmarks. These sites vary in size and amenities; many of the most desirable sites have lots of space and access to breathtaking overlooks. Note that the maps and corresponding landmarks in this video are approximate, and therefore are not intended to substitute for proper use of GPS and other technology that will help prevent you from getting lost in the woods.
This video includes only a small section of the gorge, but the number of excellent sites here may be surprising to many hikers and campers. Also, don't be surprised when many of these sites fill up early in the day, particularly on busy weekends. If you are interested in some of the arches and other landmarks in this area, check out our other videos on Cloud Splitter Overlook, Indian Staircase Overlook, the Bison Way Loop and others. And as we mention several times in the video, this area does not have a lot of natural water sources: make sure to bring enough with you when you camp here.
Remember: we should all camp responsibly and remind ourselves that campers lose their lives at RRG almost every year. Most of these tragedies could have been prevented by proper planning and abstaining from dangerous behavior.
Special thanks to Tangerine Dream for their musical inspiration.
Filmed in 2022 at Red River Gorge.

Another Nice video guys!! I think what you are calling "the Cathedral" is actually called "The Councils Chamber"?? and if you walk through it coming from the Staircase and continue on up the rock scramble, you will come to a neat feature called, "The Ohm Dome" where you can bend under it and come up into a little dome and then hum a faint "ooooohmmm" and it will reverberate.

What are your favorite campsites overall for just 2 people? I'm thinking of trying to snag the veranda spot this weekend!

I found my current unofficial sponsor for camping!!! ancient age bourbon!!! 90 proof, cheap and not crap... I don't have back pains after drinking half a fifth :)
I have a google photo album with nothing but photos I got on phones of the past if you guys would like a link. it's years of me and my kids hiking in the gorge.
