Hanson’s Point - The Best View In The Red River Gorge (Kentucky Backpacking)

- Bringing you along on our one night backpacking trip to Hanson’s Point in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge. We highly recommend checking out this area, especially for sunset or sunrise. There are plenty of great campsites a short hike from the overlook. The out and back trail as we hiked it was about 5 miles round trip. We started at the Pinch-em Tight Trailhead and hiked the Pinch-em Tight Trail to the Rough Trail and then took the unmarked trail that branches off of the Rough Trail out to Hanson’s point.
Campsite Location: (37.8168801, -83.6313964). This group of sites was about 5 minutes from the overlook.
Notes:
-Parking is at the Pinch-em Tight Trailhead off Tunnel Ridge Road. The parking lot fills up fast on weekends so make sure to get there early.
-If you plan on camping along the trail you will need to purchase a parking permit from one of the local businesses. Permit prices are $3/1 day, $5/3 days, or $30/annually. Permits are not required for day use. Camping is not permitted in any picnic area or parking area, within 300 feet of any road or developed trail, or within 100 feet of the base of any cliff, or the back of any rockshelter. When camping you will need to hang your food and garbage at least 10 feet off the ground and 4 feet away from the trunk of the tree, or store it in a bear proof canister.
-Always pack out more than you pack in, it’s our job to keep these trails clean. Always follow good Leave No Trace principles when in the outdoors.

I'm headed to RRG this weekend for my second trip. I have not been to Hanson's Point yet and didn't know how to find it. I think I can get there though after watching your video. Thanks for posting.

I enjoyed watching your journey. Should you choose to return to Hansen point/Bold knob. Approach from this angle for best experience of Pinch'm Tight. As there is a reason for that name. To start follow little turtle past Jumping Rock about a mile. This takes you under Chimney Top and around Half Moon. Turn west towards the saddle and Blaze uphill past a old homestead foundation. There is a unique camp site right in the saddle and it's the true starting point to the true Pinch'm Tight gap. I watch all kinds of great video from new hikers in the Gorge and they follow the mainstream easy routes and miss out on the full experience. There is a lot written on the Gorge and its fascinating. Thanks again for taking me down memory lane.

I agree. It was also called Bold Knob and its a great connector with jumping rock. If you can manage the real Pinchm Tight gap.

nice work man. unfortunately, I think time is running out on RRG after this year thanks to the pandemic. we did a the Indian stair case to cloud splitter loop and the amount of trash, over use is going to force the closure of these beautiful trails down because folks don't know about the "leave no trace" etiquette ....
I recommend keeping a supply of plastic garbage bags in your pocket(s). It's what I've been doing since i've started going to the gorge again in earnest.
I can't control what others do, but I can tell you every trail that *I* walk down ends up cleaner after I've walked it. Makes me feel really good doin' it, too!
I feel the same way and I do the same thing. Hopefully if we leave them cleaner others will too.
This video was very helpful, I’m headed down this weekend to backpack. What is your take on bears in the area? Have you heard of anyone encountering any?
I haven’t been there in years but we didn’t have any encounters or hear about anyone else having any.
