Just like Blazing Star, I'm surprised how well the 3D-modeled parts of the game have aged - it still looks fantastic. It's, however, always hard as hell, no surprise the gameplay of Blazing Star was very different and more enjoyable overall.

If I didn't know better I'd have sworn I was looking at an R-Type game. Not that that's a bad thing. Intro cutscene was cool as well, animation was very smooth for the time this came out.
Now that I realize it, the boss called Dragon has a similar design to Gomander, the second boss of the original R-Type. I even dare to say that Dragon seems to be a 2.0 version of Gomander.

I like the boss designs but they feel a bit derivative.... 1 - So far, so Super R-Type 2 - Almost identical to a boss from Gynoug, though at least it gets more attack patterns after it loses its head 3 - The whole "giant ship boss is the level" vibe is common enough but this does feel reminiscent of Cerberus from Thunderforce, albeit smaller and redder 4 - Darius meets R-Type! 5 - Pure Darius-ness 6 - Isn't this a recurring baddie from R-Type? Though its positioning reminds me of a boss from Arrow Flash... 7 - Almost literally copypasted from every R-Type ever (no seriously this thing is usually on the boxart!), with an added pinch of bullet hell to taste 8 - First stage is like a mix of the final bosses from Arrow Flash, Super Aleste and even Axelay. Does change it up in later phases.
The best part is watching these things EXPLODE. How great does it feel to Destroy a boss you struggled with for so long? To see THe LiFe DRaiN FRoM ITs EyES As iT EXPLoDeS!

Pulstar was made by some of the same people who made R-Type. SNK attracted a lot of talent that altered the graphics and gameplay of their games. Some of the Street Fighter devs worked on Samurai Showdown.

out of the boss roster id prefer blazing stars bosses although the bosses feel more intimidating here i always was one to prefer mechanical bosses over organic ones.
This was a great game but I felt it was a bit technical and reliant on pattern memorization. I'm more of a fan of it's spiritual sequel of sorts Blazing Star. More suited for SHMUP casuals like me and had a variety of characters.
