This is the first installment of the 2004 3.2L TL Engine Replacement series. There's a bit of a bonus with this series in that the vehicle getting the engine has a manual transmission. The engine we're using came out of a vehicle with an automatic. So for those of you interested in an automatic to manual swap, this gives you a pretty good indication of what you're up against. BTW, you would also need to swap computers if you were going from automatic to manual.

Call me weird but I find these videos therapeutic
+PresidentGuevara Nope.
Anonymous. Me too
Anonymous dude, same. Watching this stuff knocks me out at night
Me 2
Anonymous Me Too!
you know what- this is better entertainment than most tv series these times.
+Ranno Rannikmaa Yep. I cut the cord from Dish last week due to more B.S. "contract disputes" with Viacom. Much more interesting and REAL unscripted videos here on CZcams for whatever niche of entertainment you're in to. I hope Eric NEVER goes with any network. Quite a few CZcamsrs I watch have been approached by networks and they all have told the networks to get lost.
+Sean Spring Welcome to the fold, remember to also fight and sign any petitions that keep the internet free and companies with their dirty grubby fingers out of our pie.
If you want things to stay as they are (cool internet with cool people) you've got to fight for it. Otherwise, it's going to be TV2.0 only twice as fast, because once they start, they don't stop.
+Ranno Rannikmaa Thanks.
Thumbs up for "VTEC just kicked in yo" comment!
+Adrian Kingsley-Hughes V-tec yo!!!its doesnt help yo!!
lol!
Eric, I always knew I liked you and your vids. Then you yelled, "V-TECH JUST KICKED IN, YO" and I finally understood why.
It's HAMMER time with EricTheCarGuy!
Besides the old NSX, this body style TL is the best looking car Acura has ever made.
+Nutz4Gunz45 RSX is pretty good looking too.
+Alex Jacobson I personally think the Integra is a good looking vehicle as well as the TL and nsx
+Bradley Preston *rsx
Acura Legend.
+Nutz4Gunz45 Yea, i really like this gen TL. Thinking of getting one, seen them go for pretty cheap on craigslist. anyone know how they are in terms of reliability or if they have and common issues?
This is the best thing I've seen in my uploads in well over a week
I like this one. Contempt plus information with every step is the way education should be!
lol
Every time i watch people doing this kind of work they just show in a short time what to remove and it looks easy till you are doing it and realize that is not that easy but you just spend 4 hours trying to remove a nut. Now this is the real thing. I like it, real work thks
Eric, it's awesome to see you with a lift and a cameraman! So excited to see how the channel has progressed! Thank you for the videos.
Honestly never thought a channel about cars could be so amusing. Great job
Nicely done, Eric! It's great to see a swap with a pro to go through step by step to teach those of us with limited wrench time.
And thanks to Brian for the awesome shots!
Dang Eric, you worked that car like a Magician, Great job!
I'm glad there's guys like you. you have more patience than I do.
I just bought a 2006 accord sedan v6 w/ 6 speed manual that hydrolocked and threw a rod. Awaiting engines arrival from lkq and came across this video for the second time. I watched this video when it first came out and never thought I would be watching it again to get a head start on a upcoming Honda acura engine swap. Good job Eric. Keep making videos
The dramatic cuts are absolutely hilarious. Great job editing as always
Hell yeah man, awesome seeing someone become so successful doing what they know/love. Hope to be as big as your channel one day! Keep up the good work Eric! +1 Subscriber :D
Hitting that ball joint like it owes you money...
threaded ball join puller tool works wonders
They tried to teach us this way in my automotive technology class, and I was dumbstruck. If I saw somebody beating on MY shit like that, and not using a proper puller.........
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Great camera work, very impressed.
i usually i like your videos man, but when i don't I LOVE EM'!!
Dealt with the 2005 Acura TL Engine replacement few months ago as well. Same engine, auto transmission though, managed to get it out from the top too without taking the stub frame so didn't need to deal much with the rack related stuff. Phew.
Great video Eric, you're my inspiration for following my passion and being a mechanic.
Did you take engine and transmission out together threw the top?
"Tighten to factory spec" - As the other Eric would say. With an impact
great video Eric! Thanks for posting! I always learn something new when I watch you're videos.
Oh man Eric's just thrilled to be doing this job.
Most enjoyable yet. Love the aggression
My dad did that "look with your eyes..." crap to me when I was growing up. I never even thought about it when I had to turn bolts blind. Nice catch.
I do love engine replacement videos :) thank you ericthecarguy!
This is one of the best ETCG videos I've seen. I like it when he is annoyed! Makes for good watchin'!
it feels like rather than a video for us, it is a video for you to remember what goes where when you put the engine back in lol.
Dylan Z haha
Thanks Eric, vids are super helpful and i appreciate how you show problems and real life situations, not just a perfect scenario
I keep my tool box organized, with the most used tools, easily accessible. Brian got some great shots!
EXPERTISE, KNOWLEDGE, INSTINCT and TOOLS, you are the master!
did this same swap in a drive way in the summer of 08 , NEVER AGAIN!
I just pull an already partial pulled one from a junk yard.. and after 12 hours of hard knuckle breaking labour..... i dont even have the courage to dare to take out the one in my car and finish the swap...they are truly one of the hardiest swaps ever...
what a job, in my mind you're up there with heart and brain surgeons, it amazes me, I just know how to put gas and fill the windshield wiper fluid 😳
+Henry Pacheco Thanks for the compliment. Hiram Gutierrez is closer to the brain surgeon. That guy is amazing. czcams.com/users/hiramgutierrez
+EricTheCarGuy I have a question, on an Acura TLX with a DCT if they were to replace the transmission, would the torque converter be part of it? or is that a separate component that wouldn't go also? (their dct includes a torque converter)
+Henry Pacheco Most reman transmissions come with torque converters. It's rare that they don't.
+EricTheCarGuy yes but a DCT normally doesn't use a torque converter, Acura added it for smooth low speed and stop and go that was the reason for the question, is it still part of the transmission and would it get replaced together?
i watched from begining to end and not a single commercial thank you
so weird, I usually come on and binge watch your stuff. I just got a 08 TL and was thinking I dont think ive seen Eric do Acura stuff before and boom 10 seconds later I see this series.
Why you said yes? Because you're one of the nicest guys on the planet?
+Gears and Gasoline Because I wanted to make an engine replacement video for you.
And there are those of us that both applaud and appreciate your efforts to bring the viewers content. Especially when the car you're stuck working on is a complete and total POS! Thanks Eric!
Eremon1 and why is that car a POS?
@@skidcraft1998 it’s not. Acura 2004-08’s are great cars.
@@Justin_Anvil Until they have been completely molested inside and out through 20 years of being passed around by teenagers as a half assed project car.
Lol. You went full Viking on that ball joint.
+phatcowboy76 And I loved it.
Great video Eric. Looking forward to part 2. This is like what you used to do a couple of years ago but with better camera, lighting and sound. I want more!
Thank you for answering questions and telling us tips on disassembly.
Eric, is that Barbara's van in the background of the shop? Please tell me you shot this a while ago.
+This Does Not Compute Yes it is. This video was shot a little over a year ago when Barbara's van had first showed up.
Eric. can you please do a video about "basic" tools a starting technician should have? At least enough tools to do everything from a basic oil change to an engine swap.
+Fadi Ayat czcams.com/video/vMNwHiZ02ic/video.html
I just bought an 05 3.2 TL 6speed. This video was invaluable. Thank you, so much.
YAY!! A new series to look forward to.
vTec kicked in YO!!!
Damn... I can tell Eric was pissed bout something lol
+Camilo19832001 he is in the middle of putting the rear in to fairmont. so i can see why is a little annoyed.
+themfknightrider420 oh damn I see. Well he did said he has time.. But it's messed up that someone threw this in the middle of the fairmont project
+Camilo19832001 Not pissed, just had a lot of contempt for this car.
+adventureoflinkmk2 This video was shot a little over a year ago just after Barbara's van had arrived. I worked on it after I finished this engine.
+EricTheCarGuy aaah. It looks like those engines are a p.i.t.a to do.... Great channel by the way! When you coming to south Florida?😁
Love how clean your shop is!
great work between you and your cameraman ! Very good video and entertaining , thanks !
8:45 When the mighty Eric throws his mighty hammer, parts that are before him must yield.
Did they yield?
"Greetings Viewers, Car the Eric Guy here!" hahahah! Awesome job Eric.
+Pat Haugen ....I'm getting to love that intro line.
Thank you for doing it "out the top" exactly what I needed.
Eric, I have watched many if your videos over the years. this is one of my favorites. I love the enhanced sarcasm and aggression on this unloved Acura! Lol. Stay Dirty !!!
That is exactly the reason why I'd change my oil now. Oil change is cheap, but you're also paying for a CHEAP WORK.
+Wildman Yep
I was thinking how pissed you were right before you mentioned the contempt
"Go ahead, try and slow me down"
Good attitude! Wish it's one I remembered more often because having done a gearbox replacement at home on the floor (cradle out method) on an AWD car recently I definitely let some stuff slow me down!
Got it done in the end though. I did wonder to myself what a pro does to keep themselves moving forward though because inevitably stuff comes up that can waste hours.
Hey Eric, just wanted to thank you for this great video. Well put together and clear. I am new to your channel and i owned a Acura TL 2005. Subscribed
There's just so much to take off... And then forget where it goes haha.
+dirtshower250 he has this video to remind him :)
+dirtshower250 I try and stay organized. It's not so bad.
+EricTheCarGuy I need to be more organized!
+dirtshower250 It helps.
I pray that I never have to replace my engine on my Acura TL type s 2007 this looks like a PITA!!!
You better pray hard...they are truly a immeasurable load of pain...
very efficient. You sir are a very talented mechanic
I really appreciate the editing. Shows everything but not EVERYTHING. Must take a lot of time to rewatch and edit it all. Thanks for the awesome videos. I owe my job to you lol
+AspectOfTheStorm This started out as about 7 hours of raw footage. It's condensed down to about 2.5 hours. Take the raw footage and multiply by 4 and you have a rough estimation of editing time.
11:19 I flinched
something tells me you have broke one of those dipsticks before
+John McKamy Yes.
Good job on getting all the right angle/shots Brian!
you and I have a similar mindset when working, I would rather take an extra few minutes to make sure reassembling goes smoothly and I can't honestly think of much I would've done differently for this job. Great work Eric, and thanks for posting it for us all to enjoy!
+Bradley Preston I couldn't agree with you more. Thanks for the comment.
those fusion tires are such junk this owner really cares about his car lol
+Hale Cooley and they're bald, 9:35 its like they are racing slicks
+riomp300 All things in this video point to the owner being negligent as hell, even being able to make a video out of this engine replacement Eric seems like he's regretting it every step of the way. Mostly because he knows this engine will be bricked in a couple years just like the first one I imagine.
+Jesse Crandle and the "new" engine is probably from a junkyard it also could be junk my old boss always got junkyard engines and guess what none of them worked the first time I myself got lucky once with a cavalier quad four of all things lol
yes they r junk had them hate them. now have toyo or michellen tire only on my cars.
Falkens are crap too. I had falkens on a damn Altima and they didn't even last 24k mi!
Eric, keep the engine and swap the J32 into a little crx =p
How COOL it would be to have an ETCG swapped Honda video series.
There probably isn't a damn thing wrong with that old J32.
You are always my hero! Thanks Eric the car guy!!💪
Awesome quality Eric
Barbara's van in the background.
+jeffscomp It had just been dropped off when I shot this video.
+adventureoflinkmk2 You'd be amazed at how many I have stocked up.
+adventureoflinkmk2 More like 1 year+
+EricTheCarGuy I only just saw that this was a stockpiled video because you still have your old harbor freight light :P I was actually gonna ask you sign that and send it my way but then you ran it over :(
+EricTheCarGuy should make fixing it forward its own day, and repairs stay on Friday. Even more than one repair video a week would work
8:49 RIP headphone users.... ;)
COULDN'T BELIEVE HE DID ALL THAT HAMMERING WITHOUT HEAR PROTECTION!
Finally a long video :D thank you Eric :)
Thank you Eric! You are the MVP 💪
Mechanics are car surgeons, just saying :P
I would charge $10,000 for this job
+zunedog31 Then you wouldn't be performing this job. But maybe that's your point. lol
***** Exactly haha. The amount of knowledge required, equipment needed, time, patience, energy.. it makes my head spin.
zunedog31 I know what you mean. I don't think I'll ever have ability to do a job like that.
***** Can you imagine doing all of this, putting it all back in, then it doesn't start? I'd drive the car off a cliff and save up for a new one.
zunedog31 Yea lol. It would definitely be a nightmare.
Eric you are the best I love to watch your auto repair
one of his best videos.
Thank you for showing all the cool tips and tricks when disassembling the engine. I have a 06 TL that i've had for 9 years; I was just curious on how to take it apart for the fun of it. lol
I’ve watched this video series a few times at least for entertainment if nothing else. Now I got a free ‘05 TL that needs a new engine. How convenient!
Thanks Eric, great video!
Sir keep your videos posting your my number one go to vid.
good job looking forward to the next episode. keep those videos coming.
The most I've done with a car, is change a battery and a tyre so I don't know if I'm your regular audience but I will say I love your videos especially engine replacement ones. Thanks for suffering through it for us.
+TempGuest7 Sure thing. Thanks for watching.
I have NO clue how you put all of this shit back together where it was originally and do it in enough time. I would go NUTS putting this back together. Good job man.
aaf1218 this is why I don't touch imports... i tell them take that shit to the fucking dealer
Had to wait all day ta watch cant wait for part two
Really appreciate that you put a rag down on your working area. My mechanic does a pretty good work but there is always something left behind for me to clean. Anyways great vid man
Nice cold beer and some car repair videos!
I'm glad I found these videos cuz I'm about to do this same thing same car six-speed manual thank you for making videos about it!
As a RABIB HONDA/ TL owner...I can't express how much this video means too me. Thanks Eric.
I really appreciate the simplicity of classic vehicles.. having a bad memory, it would take forever to do a job like this with so many electrical connections.
This is excellent. Nicely done.
Thanks for doing what you do. love your videos.
thank you so much eric I really enjoyed this video because I couldn't tell you squat about a vehicle so thank you.
Great work Eric
I can sense the mood on this one. Flashback to your days as a tech.....you just had a nice long weekend, and now it's Monday morning, and this is what you have to start your day. Yay! lol
+justsomeguytoyou Sort of. This car was a pile of poop. I didn't really like working on it.
+EricTheCarGuy why was that?
He just said why, because it was a pile of crap lol Working on junkers is frustrating, partially because you have to deal with shoddy work that previous people have done.
I've been waiting for an engine replacement video!! Embrace your 772,000 apprentices lol you teach us more than most :)
+Ghetto Dynamicz Inc Happy to oblige. After this you get a bunch of salvage yard videos and a Fairmont build. You're welcome.
I drive a standard but I never really knew how the shifter worked with in the engine now I see how it works. Thanks for this vid.
Nice video Eric!
I like to see you do a video on replacing a 2004 TL bank 1 by the firewall catalytic converter. Keep up the good work Eric.
Looks like you're having as much fun with this car as I have with all the cars I work on at the used car dealership I work at.
vtec just kicked in yo! this video is awesome
