One of The Most Misunderstood Basketball Training Concepts

  • In this video snippet from the Mastery Hoops Player Development Conference, professional basketball trainer Tyler Leclerc talks about a vital training concept called affordances. He gives a straightforward example between Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook and how every player will see different opportunities in the game based on their abilities (skills and physical abilities). This example goes to show that not every basketball player should train the same, or as coaches, we shouldn't expect everyone to see the same opportunities on the court.
In this example, Steph Curry and Russell Westbrook are in the EXACT same situation coming off a pick-and-roll situation, but they both do completely different things. This is because they are different players with different physical and skill abilities. In the same situation, Russell might see more opportunities to drive (using his athletic ability) and Steph will see more opportunities to shoot his 3. As a basketball coach, we need to understand this. Would you yell at steph for not driving when you thought he should've, no, or would you yell at Russ for not shooting, hell no. It is the same with every player at every age, don't put your expectations on them and what you think they should have done, understand each player is an individual and work with that.
Now when it comes to training, we can expand these players' affordances by training and increasing their skills and physical abilities, with that increase in skills will be in an increase in seeing opportunities to act on the court. This is the basis of my training. No two players are identical and no player is a blank slate, you are simply building on top of their current abilities and constraints..

Been following you for a while now I like this one a lot very small detail that coaches or trainers don’t think we only see the black and white part of it instead of real decision making!
