    7:31 if the king takes the bishop rather than bishop takes rook then isn't rook on d6 threatening mate to d8 and then take after black rook blocks?

      I am late but the best move according to me is 7:29 to not take rxf1 but bxd6 Rb1 (because b1-Q is check) Rc2 with the threat of rc1+.....Ba2 cannot be played because rc1 is also a checkmate forcing black to play rxc1 pxc1-Q

      @@urlfacilearetenir there are two things wrong with your analysis. First if rh1+, you don't have to take and can just move to G3 and there is no promotion with tempo. Second, even if you did promote and went to b8, then kh1, and if qxd6, then nxf7+ when blacks gets the queen back with a discoverd check tempo.

      Edit : of course W can play Kg3 without taking the rook.

      Yea even from afar I was confused about this line and how it could be good for black, which is why I doubted that Rxf2 was the move he played until Simon showed it. The line he gave was blatantly obvious and very trivial, and I was surprised he didnt show the Kxh2 line, which was clearly more critical. If Rf8 then white has Rd1 up two pieces (even Nxf8 allowing b1=Q might still be good for white with R, B, N vs Q), and the only nice looking way to stop mate appears to be h6 or h5, but Im just convinced either of these are winning for black.

    #5 7:21 I did find Rf3 but didn't see what to do if white plays Re1.
    Answer is as simple as b1=Q , Rxb1, Qg3

    In that last example it's awesome how his "back rank is weak" but the queen just stand on the open file waiting to be taken so he can deliver checkmate first. "The crossing gaurd defense"

    7:32 - 7:34 I prefer Kxh2 instead of Bxf1, as it gets rid of a strong piece and also saves the Rook for white.

    1:28 actually, MVL only has the bishop pair for the queen, not a rook and a bishop

    At 7:33 why not white king just takes bishop to avoid check? Black king is under threat of checkmate so can’t promote queen. So after black king moves pawn to create space simply white bishop watches B1. Right?

      Kh2 rh1 u cant take because of b1 queen then kh2 qb8 pin the rook and if kg3 then h6 and now you have 2 past pawns

      This is the line I see. Kh2 rh1 Kg3 h6 Bishop a2 watching b1. Black would possibly play a1 to kick bishop but bishop plays b1 rook takes then white rook goes b6.

    After Black plays Rook X F2
    Instead what if white plays
    Rook x R f2, Queen X R D1 +, King X B H2
    Queen to d6 + , King moves then capture white rook
    And now it’s Queen 🆚 Knight & Bishop ... i like the odds 😎

    7:29 Simon, you should have considered after Rxf1+ Kxh2 because this whole line is dependent upon this variation turning advantageous for black and for me it is not immediately obvious how black is winning because White’s counterplay is also huge.

      It’s a really interesting position for me. Plugging it into the computer Bxd6 is forced after rook takes queen. Then black would definitely be winning here.

    Okay so this is probably quite dumb, but in the last one after Rxf1 just Kxh2 and white is threatening checkmate next move. And after probably h6 just Bxf1 and white will have a rook, bishop and knight for a queen. Ik theres probably a move im not seeing but just had to comment this.

    7:31, why not kxh2, and then black can't queen due to back rank threats, and then take the rook with the bishop and have a winning position?

      Rxf1is the wrong move after the Rook takes Queen. The correct move is to take the Rook by the Bishop. Then White has to lose his Rook to eliminate the b2 pawn and black wins.

    Why isn't Nd7+ better in the 4th one? If BxN, Qh8 is mate immediately. If RxN, Qh8 Ke7, QxR, threatening Qd8 mate, or if QxN, RxQ, and then either BxR Qh8 mate, RxR Qh8 as above and white will be up a queen, or Ke8 and white has a number of options, such as RxR, Rxb7, Rxf7, etc.

    If rook takes the queen, and then the black rook takes on d8, and the the king takes in h2, black can't promote a queen because the white rook can do a background mate.

    7:25 is a blunder if rook takes the rook on f1 the king can take the bishop on h2 remember black will not have time to advance the porn because of his back rank weaknesses hence the black rook on f1 will be taken and black will have lost(blundered)

    7:31 why not king takes bishop, threatening mate on the next move with the rook. Now simply promoting will result in mate. So Maxime has to play h6 and then bishop takes rook and white still has 2 pieces and a rook for the queen which will atleast be a draw if not a win.
