Gareth Southgate tells Prince William of anguish about England penalty miss at Euro 96

  • Gareth Southgate has revealed a conversation with England team-mate Stuart Pearce was “invaluable” in helping him deal with his Euro 96 penalty miss.
Southgate, now the England manager, has spoken about how he felt responsible for ending the feelgood factor sweeping the nation as hopes grew that the Three Lions would secure a first major title in 30 years.
And he says talking about the miss with Pearce, who endured his own shoot-out agony at the 1990 World Cup, helped him immensely.

When players really believe that they were the better team during the match and they really believe they deserve to win, they always do much better on the penalty kicks. It is all about confidence and not being the most talented player. And also some luck is important.

Some very helpful ways to look at things here.
It's finding ways to turn negatives around and into positives. Not always easy to do but just having that mindset to occupy the thoughts instead of dwelling is definitely how we get through difficult times.
I've never been so proud of an England team with their stoic confidence and discipline.
Never felt so inspired by an England manager to be a better person myself.
    Inspired!

I was a bit annoyed that none of the France players tried to support him on the pitch (or maybe they did and I didn’t see it). If I were his captain, I’d have been straight over to him and done it publicly. You’re a team and I feel you should always present yourself as a team whatever happens.

I would never take a penalty, and I couldn’t care less if I am labelled a “chicken”. Football fans are animals. Some people take a sport far too damn seriously. And I get it, blue collar job, the missus is on your case all the time..blah blah. All your happiness is predicated on how well your football team is doing, it’s the one escape you have. Still though…not even premier league level wages would make me take a penalty. To face that level of hate from people because you missed a kick, that’s insanity. And I have so much respect to anyone who steps up to take penalties.
Hope the damn thing “comes Home”, the country needs a lift after the year it’s had. I need a damn lift lol. And if people around me are happy and joyous for a bit, then I am an England fan too! 🦁🦁🦁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🍻

I was 10 in '96. I remember that summer as if it were yesterday. I remember the crushing disappointment I felt when we got knocked out by the germans. Not because Gareths' penalty was saved, more so because of the chances we had, especially that Gazza one. We outplayed the germans that night.
Gareth didn't let anyone down. He had the guts to step up and take one. Something even 'The Guvnor' Paul Ince didn't have.

all the positive responses shocks me,
he is the England manager that in truth had no right to be given that job, and 2 days after the defeat he drops the words, quote "I think I may have out stayed my welcome " unquote, run away why don't you leave the team holding the bag, nice one, and now we see this, crying for sympathy what a sad git, the only experience he has is how to fail, failed as a player and now as a manager, I still wanna know who the relative he has in the FA is.
