Cheers for the shout! Yes this is a great non powdered steel, swinging well with 154CM and BD1 as a cut above some of the more ‘classic’ stainless steels, at least on rope cutting!

Cold Steel says the 10A steel only gives about a 20 percent increase in edge retention, but you're equating it with 154CM, which has been one of my favorite steels. I'd love to buy a 10A Voyager, but I'm waiting for them to bring back it's older Voyagers! I despise it's present Voyager line.

@@johnroberts6695 I know what you mean - the slim and light last gen Voyagers versus the current 'roided up maxi handles. The Prolite is worth looking at for a slimmer handle but (a) the blade shapes they offer don't appeal to me and (b) nothing matches the Medium 3" Voyager for compact traveling; not even the classic Air SOG.

What you say is true, but CS sacrificed beauty when it didn't need to. What was the deficiency in the old Voyagers that we needed to get ugly stone washed finishes?
Modern Voyagers are strong and they do what they are supposed to do, but they have all the charm of a hammer! And though I like good, functional hammers, I don't collect hammers. I like the old polished Voyagers and Ti-Lites. Bead blast finishes save money, but I don't like bread blast or stone washed finishes and I find them functionally wonderful, but unattractive. I don't collect them as I did the old Voyagers. I bought up a bunch of CTS-XHPs that were discontinued and I've never bought a Cold Steel since.
Cold Steel now is a maker of hammers. Good hammers, but hammers nevertheless.

This knife is awesome. I bought it about a month ago, after watching bunch of videos and a lot of research. My lock wasn't that smooth as yours and I saw that could steel guys said we have to stay it open in 90 degree, for about 24 to 48 hours. But anyway it's real solid and sharp. It's super sharp and blade shape and material is really great. also I bought it in higher price but still I am totally happy with my choice. great video thank for your reviews.

A tip for the pocket clip: (I don't have this knife but I do have the SR1 Lite tanto). I ran a 100 grit sandpaper under the clip and just slide it in/out a few times and it rubbed off a bit of material. Without having to remove the clip I was able to smooth it out. Slides in and out the pocket now without shredding my pants.

Great review Aron . The Voyager has been around for a while , I have the CTS-BD1 model, these knives are underappreciated in my opinion , its not a small edc knife , so don't get it twisted , but its is a great hard use , work , woods , and self-defense knife and large edc knife. It has Bronze over Teflon washers , Aluminium liners , the Tri-Ad lock , and a 4" ffg blade , all for around $50 , WHAT ?? Yes Guys this is a great knife , don't knock it till you try it , just get one . Its basically a ffg Recon 1 for less money .

I bought a Voyager Large Tanto with the AUS-10A steel. It is a smooth opening knife and the blade is sharp. It made me bleed one time at a Lowe's because I dropped the blade one handed while the blade was pointed upward. The blade came down on my thumb like a guillotine! Despite that, it serves as my "Gentleman's Knife" in my slacks due to it having a lighter weight than my other Cold Steel folders. I had to modify the clip to fit over my slacks, however. It is just a good knife from Cold Steel to have on you for whatever.

I have the xl, which is alot of knife. It’s my walking knife especially at night, we have bear in our area and the dog doesn’t do well with them. I just ordered the large tanto… can’t wait… I got that AUS10a to a razor sharp edge… it cut me by just nicking the edge. I like this steel more than almost any steel, plus it’s super durable and holds a great edge. I’d say it’s a better ,tougher and easier to get an edge than than 154 cm,D2, aus8 and n360 steels. Great review of this knife!

  • @alphaandomegaministry2718

This blade is a revelation - a game changer. I just took shipment of the tanto large. Super smooth deployment. Flawless quality. Super strong. It even out-kools my K2 which i thought not possible. I do hope CS continues with this level of design+strength+quality+price. Its what sets them apart. But without Andrew Demko and Lynn Thompson at the helm...........i got serious doubts.

    • @mdubb4855
      @mdubb4855 Před rokem

I also like the tanto but mainly because it’s got a narrower blade (top to bottom) meaning less pocket space used up.
I really like the Air Lite too and wouldn’t mind a 3.75” version. 4” is king of utility folders and the Voyager is a screaming steal, but 3” is mandatory for some, and the look and handling change for each .25” of additional length from there - 3.25”, 3.5”, 3.75” and 4”. Discontinued Prolite is 3.25”, Air Lite 3.5”, then the gap between 3.5” and 4” doesn’t seem to get much Cold Steel love.
3.75” seems oddball but it’s the length of the classic Buck 110, and millions and millions of McBuck 110 owners can’t be that wrong.

Hey Aron, I love all my Voyagers. I know a lot of people like to cry about the pocket clips , but these knives are not made to be edc knives first , were you pull it out every 5 minutes to cut a piece of string of cut open your mail , they are made and marketed to the military , first responders , hunters , and self defense , so they make the clips tight , so you don't loose the knife , and it will be there when you really need it , possibly in a life of death situation , and secondly an edc knife , it's not hard to mod the clip , I just bent my clip out a little so it's not as tight against the frn and it's fine , I edc mine at work all the time . The Voyager is a great knife , it's been around for years and the reason is obvious.

I just picked up a tanto version of the Voyager in AUS-10a, and wow am I impressed! I think it’s going to be a fantastic knife. I do completely agree with you that the pocket clip combined with the grip texture makes it almost unusable as it comes from the factory. I ground mine down too, and now it’s good to go. But, I don’t feel like the consumer should have to do that. My Recon 1 was a pocket shredder also, but it was at least useable straight out of the box. I did end up sanding the Recon down under the clip too, but that was just personal preference. I really wish they would incorporate a small smooth area on each side of the Voyagers where the pocket clip contacts the handle like on the Endura/Delica. That would make this knife an absolute no brainer for a do everything user. Great review!

I carry a EDC folder at all times-- ranging from my various Spydercos to my 2 Chris Reeve folders when I dress up! Living in CA in a County where Conceal Carry of a handgun is illegal, I have bought a few self defense type knives. Yes, pepper spray and my running shoes are my first defense from a bad situation, but worst case scenario I figure doesn't hurt to have a nasty blade on me. Bought a Cold Steel Black Talon 2 few mos ago and love it. Think I'm going to get the XL version of this Voyager Clip Point for my everyday bag as well. Thanks for the presentation.

I'm a tall guy and, for me, the large Voyager didn't fit my hands. I have a suspicion that a lot of "BIG TACTICAL KNIVES" are made to fit shorter guys. That makes a lot of marketing sense and I won't decry it. The large model was uncomfortable unless I choked up on that blocky frontend. I actually really like that feature; the Voyagers have thinner blades (unless you opt for the tanto model) so for me they are large, slicey knives and not hard use "tactical" knives. I gave away the large Voyager but kept the XL. I really like that thing and have carried it to a lot of places including Alaskan mountain hiking. When I bought it it was almost certainly the best knife bargain for 45 bucks, they're a bit more than that now...

When I went to Cold Steel to learn more about AUS10A, it said it outperformed AUS8A by a whopping 20%!!! I thought, what, 20 percent? That's...umm...not what I was expecting. I thought maybe 45-50 percent would be nice, but 20 percent? It's not worth upgrading unless I'm rope cutting. But did Cedric say how many cuts he was getting with XHP or S35VN?

Yo brotha hack with the clip issue, you don't gotta do any sanding down. My hack is sliding ether paper or cardboard underneath and lightly lifting. I progress the thickness of the paper or cardboard a few more times a repeat the process but within a few minutes it should be just like a normal clip 👌

Got this same knife in a tanto blade for a defensive carry knife. I wanted a very sturdy blade in that roll. It takes a scary sharp edge and holds it. I couldn't agree more, the clip and texture problem is a pain but is a fixable issue. Value for sure, thank you for the review.

Sport Utility Knife? Could also be used to transport the whole family and a load of groceries, all while exploring the back country trails. Lol. But seriously. The texture on the Voyager scales vs the Recon1 is a lot easier on your pockets and getting it in and out. While still giving you great grip while in use. The recon1 is super grippy in hand but is super tight in the clip area.

But my freind seemed to like it.Also their marketing style of late-night infomercials about it being the greatest thing ever seem to be something like the Popeil Pocket Fisherman.I may have to give him a second look.

Larry, if you can get past the horribly tacky marketing, they make some unbelievably great products. I didn’t “get” them either until I picked up a Recon 1 a few years ago. Wow, was I impressed! It just flat out worked. I now have three Cold Steels (Recon 1, Finn Wolf, and Voyager Large Tanto), and I continue to be very impressed with each new one I try, especially when you look at bang for the buck. Give them a try, and I’ll bet you won’t be disappointed.

Agreed, they're actually great products cursed by terrible branding. Take for example, the Ultimate Hunter. A great knife, great value. It has "ULTIMATE HUNTER" plastered along the blade in huge letters. Not the best kind of marketing if you ever plan to use this thing around others...

You have no idea what you're missing in terms of proper hard working folders. Who gives a fuck about the marketing, Thompson loves what he does and has some fun with it. Better than fuckwit knife makers like Strider lying to his customers pretending to have served as some navy seal when he's be found to be a fraud through and through. At least Lynn actually uses his products, hunts, trains and has fun. Cold steel knives walk the talk, unlike all the other posers.
