That ZT S35VN was 1 craptastic result. Seriously, AUS10 beat it. The fact that it beat the CTS-BD1 means they did right by the customers. Many were worried the AUS10 was going to be a downgrade. Cold Steel heat treating is apparently superb!

Cold steel doesnt do knives or heat treat. They just stamp their name on things done by forges.

Seems that Cold Steel heats treats all their steels well: they all seem to lead the pack. Based on your tests.
Cold Steel is certainly not for everyone, but I don’t think anyone can fault their heat treating protocol. They seem to get the best out of whatever steel they use. I did not expect this result! I suppose this means good high-hardness 440C should test similarly?
Cold Steel receives wayyyy too much hate. And yes their heat treats are very impressive. A large portion of of the knife community are knife collectors posing as users who adopt the popular opinion that CS makes "mall ninja" crap. CS makes knives for the working man, not the snobby collector whose knife use consists 90% of opening letters and packages.
The Ace Agreed. Aus8, BD1,XHp(!), S35vn all better wear resistance than others (from tests I’ve seen). And now Aus10. Some of the best value, best performers in the market. I’m glad Pete mentions the Lawman so often. The Knifenuts guys (who are into customs) have CS a good wrap on one of their podcasts - which surprised me).

My Recon 1 is a great knife. XHP cuts through 9/16" thick extension cord containing 4 large copper wires with ZERO edge damage, still shaving every hair in one pass. Even after applying 50+ lbs pushing on the spine of the blade (attempting to push cut) and sawing on the copper. Not kidding.

That's a great # for that steel . Cold Steel does it again , some of the Best Bang for Buck Knives around, period. A lot of people where worried the AUS10 was a down grade and now everyone will want to try it . I wonder why nobody uses it , the AUS8 proved to be a pretty durable survival steel on the SRK ,so I would think the 10 would be even better , no ..

The "mall ninjas" are the ones always flocking to the latest over-hyped handle/blade materials, or laughable/unproven locking mechanisms, and super fancy grinds and designs. Those are the CZcamsrs with only tabletop reviews and no user footage aka "mall ninjas" and posers - mostly collectors.
I just saw the beautiful new $450+ m500 (mall ninja) "Anthropoid" dagger in Elmax steel from Acta Non Verba knives - does it have the tip strength and cutting capacity of Cold Steel's Tai Pan?

Elmax is best used for a blade geometry/style with more cutting, slicing, and chopping capacity.
The Fairbairn-Sykes fighting dagger on which the m500 is inspired by, is primarily a fragile needle nose stabber needing a steel with more focus on proper heat treatment, high toughness and point geometry to avoid blade/point snapping and blunting.
A better tool steel would drop the price dramatically and provide better durability for the m500's design.
Now, if the Tai Pan were using Elmax steel....WOW!
i have been edcing a cold steel voyager in aus10 and having just watched this I am amazed at how in line your testing was with my feelings on the steel. I work at a manager at autozone and on truck day i open lots of double corrigated oil boxes. this knife beat my zt 0909 in terms of edge holding. odd with how much better this does than 440c with almost same levels of ingred. maybe this was the good 440c you were looking to test.
If anyone has followed Lynn Thompson and Cold Steel for a lengthy amount of time, one will appreciate his philosophy in product design:
1) Offer more performance at all price ranges.
He didn't run to the latest over-hyped knife materials, that sooner or later becomes replaced by something slightly better - he finds out what's affordable, dependable, user friendly in terms of ease of resharpening, and realistic edge retention and overall attributes for a particular design/function.
In particular, Cold Steel pays attention to heat treatment and blade geometry for particular uses in blades.
That's why so many CS users still swear by AUS8A - even their 4116 stainless and carbon steels do extremely well for their price points and particular tasks.
I love Cold Steel folders. I recently got the Large Luzon.
For 40$ it’s great, I’ve had mine for about 2+ years now and have used it in my civilian job (metal work) and in my military duties. Broke the tip twice (abuse not through regular knife use ), used it as hammer, glass breaker. The lock up still holding strong, the blade is useable but I have put it through its paces. Sharpens easy and 6” is a whole lot of blade to work with. (Don’t let the ladies fool you)
I retired it for a Voyager XL but it’s still in my collection and use it for fun at times.
The large Luzon is in my top 5 💯
I also have the XL Espada. It is cool if you like carrying a large folder.

I own a CH model 3501 in AUS10 it's an excellent knife. You should consider one. Very nice milled titanium frame lock with excellent bearing action and it cost me $64 US. A hell of a lot of knife for the money.
4MAX Scout is a terrific value in this steel right now.
An absolute beast that will outperform and outlast other higher priced tank knives.
ALL of the other so called very expensive "hard use" folders out there, fail in one major aspect:
Dependable lock strength.
The time tested well made lockback mechanism isn't fidget friendly, but it's the most dependable and it gives the most satisfying bank vault sound. The Tri-Ad Lockback greatly improves the dependable time tested design.

Simple. Other channels just have pretty table top reviews just focused on looks and mild discussion on "performance", aka the "Mall Ninja" channels.
REAL knife users care about blade performance, ergos, price, carry, sharpening, etc.
Blade collecting mall ninjas fawn over high prices and exotic blade materials and aesthetics.
That's why Pete doesn't have that many subscribers.
I ordered the tanto air lite for edc mostly for the trilock and lightweight. I wasn't sure about the steel. I really appreciate the effort and feel good about my decision 👍

I'd love to test Cold Steel Aus-10, I was able to test Tuya knife Aus-10 and it did beat BD1 by a slim margin. Cold Steel seems to have very good heat treatment process so I'll have to get one and try it out.
The deeper voice is EXACTLY what I imagined all the "manly" men from Australia sounded like when I was a kid. Also, if you throw that knife, will it come back to you?
I like cold steel. Sure some stuff is a little crazy but their stuff is made well. I have a cold steel voyager that’s a decade or more old and it still rocks. That blade is HUGE
How is Cold Steel's stuff crazy?
Cold Steel has always been a martial arts-tactical based company. They believe big blades should be the norm.
Prior to the late 1800's, carrying a knife with a 7-12 blade edge (Bowie or dagger) was the norm.
Today's sheeple normies are "intimidated".
I have a bunch of brand NEW old Cold Steel knives with AUS8A. These include old Voyagers of all sorts, including an XL Voyager with a 6-inch blade and a Vaquero Grande. And many 5-inchers with polished VG-1 blades and AUS8A blades. All are in a box of my knives. I also have many CTS-XHP bladed knives, but I've also added them to my collector's box. My EDC is a 4-inch Broken Skull.
Years ago I bought a used (and worn) Voyager (AUS8A) serrated blade. It was my first Cold Steel Vaquero 5-incher and I was taken on the deal. The serrations were badly worn, but those serrations still feel sharp to the touch, and I've put a few miles on them myself. I still carry it for defense on occasion. So Cold Steel AUS8A serrated blades seem to last forever. I can only imagine what AUS10A blades will do. I just bought a Cold Steel Spartan serrated version. It has a dark gray handle and it's it looks great.
Love this Cold Steel Spartan Aus10A Curvy Bowie blade style shape and performance... Always think that if Crocodile Dundee and/or Rambo are traveling around the World and lost their respective knives if They don't build themselves one absolutely I bet will buy this Spartan Eyes Closed.

Yes please! My son has the Bowie and has put lots of work into it over 3 backpacking trips and it’s still essentially shaving sharp. Beats all my Swamp Rats/Scrap Yards in edge holding...

I spoke with him in their FB group after I had read some things elsewhere someone had snap shot that he had said...since the internet is what it is...I decided to check.
He has high regard for the old CS Carbon V made back then by Sharon Steel. Camillus used it for the knives for CS, and CASE used the same steel for their carbon knives, but I don't think CASE cryotreated their blades back then, I could be wrong.
I have the same regard...because I still have my first Carbon V blades, made in the late 80s and 90s.
My user TM has had the slobberknocker used out of it. I sent it back to Ventura to be factory resharpened, and rehandled to boot. Just goes to show that my grandfather was right. A decent high Carbon steel with a good heat treat and temper is enough if you take good care of it. My CSSRK user has skinned and removed turtles from shells for turtle soup, for lack of a pair of pruning shears too!

We see in reality AUS 10 A is no midrange but on par with some higher end steels! Well done from AUS 8 to BD1 and now AUS 10. Is believe there will mo better "midrange"successor! By the way, love my Spartan ! I had all beginning with AUS 8, tgen AUS 8 stonewashed, followed by Carpenter BD1 - but the newer version beats them all by far ! Thanks for that great review.
I just got this Spartan and the AD 10 1 week ago. The AD 10 I was figiting with it and I ended up dropping the opened blade onto my inner thigh. I should have went and had it stitched instead I super glued the wound. Both knives are razor sharp. Be careful if you’re sitting around playing with the AD10 . It is unforgiving
ALL knives are unforgiving, especially when they're extremely sharp and heavy or played around with sufficient speed.
Want to safely fidget with a knife? Buy a balisong trainer.

You should get a hold of a Case XX brand knife you can test that had a blade profile that can be tested like these other ones. A Case "hammerhead" knife is a lock back with a clip point blade with some belly that would allow it to be tested easier. I would just like to see how the Case 420HC stacks up against the CV steel. I have seen your other video but it appears the skinning blade's profile skewed the results. I would like to believe that the CV is more wear resistant but I have seen a test done by another gentleman that said the 420HC held up better. I believe your testing method to be more repeatable and therefore scientific, there are lots of Case knives to choose from and the testing would help me evaluate my next purchase. I'm looking to get a Case Tribal lock, they are very beautiful knives and I appreciate the blade shape and handle configuration. Thanks!
I did not expect AUS10 to perform above and beyond S35VN or Niolox. That really surprised me. I expected more in the ballpark of slightly higher than 440C.

That's a huge improvement over the Cts-bd1 version that I have. Mine must not have been heat treated well or something because the edge rolls if you breath on it. Not kidding, I probably couldn't get 10 rope cuts on my BD1.
Hi Pete. I'd love to see VG10 added to your spreadsheet. Haven't found any specific info on it vs other steels in your data or Larrin's. Also curious if AUS10, is different than AUS10A, or are those 2 names for basically the same thing?
Yes, AUS10A and AUS10 are different in terms of quality, despite being exactly the same in material composition, but AUS10A was originally (including AUS8A) created by Aichi foundry.
The "A" that follows AUS10, denotes that the steel was manufactured by Aichi (what the A stands for) foundry in Japan.
Blade companies that list the AUS8/10 without the A, means the steel was made outside of Aichi foundry and/or outside of Japan.
The quality of the steel made outside of the Aichi foundry, may be inferior due to lack of rigid quality control standards and corners cut in steel composition.

Wow, more money for the "equivalent" of 440C. Just being a jerk, I swear by 440C . I love the usability of Cold Steel. I also love the Spyderco knives (but the cost...not so much), but when it comes to cutting out weeds in the lawn...I just can't get myself to take out my $200.00 Spyderco and take a chance on a stone being beside the weed root. Cold Steel rules, man! (As told to me by a martial artist about 25 years ago). This reluctance to to use "expensive" knives in crude ways I believe is almost universal in the knife nut world.

You should try a few different tests like cutting cardboard or wood on maybe like 5 steels from across the range so we can compare the different types of tests and maybe get some sort of rope to wood ratio

not hard at all really. quite pleasant and easy to handle.
It sharpens very easy it's a steel u can feel when it's getting sharp on a stone. holds an edge well never had any of cold steel or demkos 10a to be chippy either.
I would like to see some testing on Benchmade's D-2, to see how it stacks up. I saw the comment about the CH knives, I have to admit the fit and finish is excellent for the money and they are supposedly made out of D-2. I have a couple and some Benchmade's in D-2. Get in touch with me and I'll send you some knives to test.

Unexpectedly.. I’ve come to really like the AUS10 in my ridiculous 4max toy. It takes a really keen edge, holds it decently, and it strops back to keen quickly and easily.
Not sure how tough it is tho?
For the thickness and geometry of the 4 Max Scout, the AUS10A should be plenty tough for it's price range.
Otherwise, you'd be paying a whole lot more for a tough super stainless steel like Magnacut in a 4 Max.

Good move on Cold Steel's part. VG1 performance w/o the expen$ive lamination. Never looked up if VG1 & AUS10 was the same steel or just simular? lways thought it would be a good performer done right, but not that good. Sure the bellied hollow helped a bit. Take care Pete squeak... lol : )

Seems coldsteel heard your statement they have the recon an a mini recon aus10 can't see why the lawman won't be done. The funny thing none had coatings. They also had AD15 in aus10 I personally like this steel a lot

I find that AUS-10 knives have trouble staying razor sharp for very long and then to go dull rather quickly. They are also a pain to sharpen because the steel is so hard. I dont know why they say this stuff is so great.

Lol... what? I mean, i guess that's possible, if they aren't Cold Steel AUS10A. I have several, that I use regularly, and I have found the edge retention to be great, and the sharpening rather easy, on par with like Buck's 420HC or Kershaw's 14c27 (in terms of ease-of-sharpening, not edge retention, the AUS10A is better than either in that department).

It's very simple:
A big knife can do what a small knife can, but not the reverse.
If you're talking about ease of carry and not frightening the sheeple, then no, big knives are at a disadvantage.

Nah, these numbers check out. I have several regular-hard user knives in this steel, and my results (in day-to-day-use) mirror the result pete got.

Also, there's the wrong assumption that certain steels are the same and that these steels such as AUS8A and AUS10A, are made with the same quality control as regular AUS8/10. The last "A" denotes that the steel was made in Japan by the Aichi steel company.
Those marked as just "AUS8/10" are NOT made in Japan, and can have lesser qualities such as corrosion resistance.
I've carried a Cold Steel X2 clip point Voyager in AUS8A for over a decade, with body heat/sweat in summer indoor and outdoor conditions, and haven't experienced the corrosion issues that others mention with their "regular" AUS8, that could be made anywhere, skimping on the chromium for cost cutting.

I had to awesome 8 Cold Steel Spartan it had to be replaced due to chips about the size of a half penny in the edge of the blade one happened while batoning wood in Hawaii the other smacking through some thick foliage in California.

Hey I have a big curiosity you know. Chinese copies are common these days and they are copying particularly well this model and a few others from Cold Steel. What I would like to know is the steel used in the Chinese copies and if it's good. I don't expect them to be the same quality of the original, they're definitely not but just how good are they..?
