There are so many risks with pain medication, even OTC medicine, that I try to avoid at all costs. But I absolutely agree that 7 days should be the max for taking it. After that point, you really need to address it with your doctor, PT, etc and find an alternative treatment.

Good info, thanks. I'd be interested in some follow ups discussing other common OTC pain killers. (Maybe you've done them. I should go look) I have some arthritis in my knees that I've been expecting for 19 years now. The doc wants me to not use NSAIDs if I don't have to because of the potential for it to hurt my kidneys long term. Using Tylenol at her suggestion, but was wondering if using a variety of OTC painkillers would limit what one of them could do.

One thing not mentioned here is how these can make you feel. While I find both acetaminophen and ibuprofen somewhat sedating, the effects of ibuprofen are far more pronounced. When I take ibuprofen at night I can also wake up somewhat groggy. Acetaminophen doesn't seem to have the same problem. And naproxen, to me is much harder on the stomach. And something not touched on is acetaminophen mixed with a muscle relaxant such Orphenadrine, brand name Norgestic.

While I applaud your desire to avoid taking unnecessary pills, delaying pain medication is NOT an appropriate way to manage pain. We teach in nursing school that you want to treat pain BEFORE it peaks & requires much more medicine to make the patient comfortable. Of course, using non pharmacological techniques is essential as well. I’m a big fan of COLD PACKS.

When I avoulsion fractured my ankle last week, my ER Dr taught me to microdose ibuprofen round the clock on injury onset to mitigate the swelling. He said it would help provide faster less painful healing. I'm typically painkiller adverse: they don't make me feel good, and I trust my body's responses. But I got the same fracture last year, did not have that advice, got poorly taught how to ace bandage the foot, and it swelled up like a balloon and was in an incredible amount more pain than this time. There's a place for everything, and everything has it's place.

I recommend it but only if necessary anti inflammatory drugs slow down healing when I’m not working i fast and let my body go through Autophagy. Ask YOUR DOCTOR. One approach I learned in nursing school is alternating ibuprofen with acetaminophen, so you can dose for pain every 2-3 hours. This is for more difficult to control pain, when you are avoiding using narcotics.

As also having had some terrible accidents which permanently injured my neck and living now with chronic pain and discomfort I fully understand. When I was in my sixties I was still able to use those pain medications but infrequently. Whatever you do please do not do any heavy lifting or put strain on your neck with a hard or too high pillow. I can encourage you that depending on your age in 2 or 3 years, less if you’re under 40, you will improve if you are very careful not to strain or re-injure your neck.
