Can I Take Tylenol and Advil Together?

  • In this video the surgeons discuss the use of Tylenol, also known as acetaminophen, and Advil, also known as ibuprofen. ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER BEFORE TAKING ANY NEW MEDICATIONS. The surgeons discuss the fact that acetaminophen is metabolized by the liver. Ibuprofen, which is a non steroidal anti inflammatory or NSAID is metabolized by the kidney. So if you are healthy enough to take either of the medications, most of the time it is ok to use both medications at the same time as part of a multimodal pain treatment plan.

    As a Combat Medic we mix these two quite often. They work very well together. Almost as well as Opioid pain killer especially in the field where performance may still be required. For initial dosing I usually do 2x2 then 1x1 there after as needed. This sometimes gets a bit high for normal dosing. But we are talking field emergency situations with generally healthy soldiers

    I've asked my doctor about this and he said it's fine and says that it's basically attacking the pain at two different angles. Whenever my DDD flares up to a pain level 4, I'd take a pill each and it works better than two of the same for me. Nice to watch this and get a second opinion (even though unnecessary), but it's great for those that are looking for other ways to manage their pain.

    Something not stressed here, and should be noted (these doctors know this but I think they sort of skipped over this): If a tablet is enteric-coated, such as basic Ibuprofen, DO NOT cut or crush these tablets. The way it was explained to me was these 2 meds work in very different ways. Ibuprofen goes to the source of the pain, and tackles the inflammation that causes the pain, and acetaminophen works by telling your brain it doesn't hurt.
    ????? IDK if this is an oversimplified explanation, but it makes sense.
    The liver is affected by acetaminophen and the kidneys by the ibuprofen.

    That's really helpful. I've learned a lot about pain control (as opposed to pain relief) as a result of a broken wrist and a broken ankle 11 years later. I wasn't getting much help or advice from my GP and found a lot of this information about combining the two on the internet, but this video explains why what I found worked for me - worked. Super helpful to have my own research findings confirmed and more information about why. It wasn't the broken bones that caused me to grind my teeth with pain, it was the post-surgery recovery for about 10 days that was the problem. British GPs seem incredibly reluctant to prescribe opiods now which is excruciatingly frustrating post-operatively. I'm still struggling with my ankle sometimes, six months after surgery, but paracetemol works wonders when I've overdone it!

    Acute Rehab RN here- this combo is not unusual for our multiple trauma/fracture patients (of course those without renal or hepatic impairment). That combo gets ordered as a routine pain management modality, with prn opioids on board. And those patients usually get Lidocaine topical patches administered around the affected site (assuming the fracture is not in a cast, like an ORIF of the hip), and some kind of muscle rub cream (think of bengay) to apply as well. Good info for the average layperson!

Long issue with aseptic necrosis in hip joint at an early age and ibu, aspirin and acetominphyn (vitamins etc.) use over long term led to minor ulcers. Something in the stomach before has always served me well since then. My story and I'm sticking to it. YMMY.😁

      BTW plenty of water. My doc has me drinking 100 oz per day. It can be a little bit of a struggle sometimes, but no biggie and I believe in it. I always did the old 8, 8 oz cups a day but he said not enough for a big guy like me. I keep a 20 oz bottle with me and drink 5 (refills) from 6A to about 7P. (I'm no environmentalist but there are too many empty bottles out there. I might use the same one for months. Just rinse it out once a day) Just makes sense that water is good for you. After all it is what we are made of for the most part! Thanks again.

    The biggest advantage of taking these two drug together, other than the different MOAs (mode of action), is that you can lower the dosage of each one. 200 mg of Tylenol is less damaging on the kidneys than the usual 400mg and 325 or 650mg of Tylenol is less harsh on the liver than a full gram (i.e. 2 x 500). This combo works really well for me - headaches. Taking 4 grams of Tylenol a day is an excellent recipe for those seeking a kidney transplant. I think the docs completely missed the fact that you can lower the dosage.

  • @peterk9243
    @peterk9243 Před měsícem

    Okay, so the main reason you can take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together is because they work on two completely different receptors. The one thing you don't want to do is take two medicine that bind to the same receptors, because then typical dosing goes out of the window. There is a point to be had about liver metabolism, when you're mixing medication. You can check the insert for such issues, but it's better to ask your pharmacist when you are in any sort of doubt.
    That is not to say that both acetaminophen and ibuprofen aren't potentially dangerous when used for prolonged periods of time. Talk to your GP when you feel you need to rely on either - or both - for more than a week or so.

    I had a total hip replacement 4 weeks ago. I was on opioids in the hospital (overnight stay), and was prescribed 2 opioid meds upon discharge, along with several other meds. I did not take any of the Oxycodone, and only took the Tramadol for 2 days. Essentially, all I've taken for pain is 1000 mg of Acetaminophen 3 or 4 times a day. Yes, I still have the pain, though not as intense as the first week, but I have a rather high tolerance anyway, and I did not want to take the opioids. My Dr. did instruct me not to take NSAIDs while on the Acetaminophen, but since that is my pain reliever of choice, I may take your advice and intersperse some Ibuprofen with the Acetaminophen. Thanks!

    I'm allergic to aspirin and its derivatives which limits what I'm allowed to take. Also, I have no gall bladder since it was removed having stones impacting it. I do not digest grease or fats or fatty foods without experiencing gall bladder dumping syndrome. That makes my digestive area a mess too say the least. Now for a kicker into this mess, my primary care physician prescribed 55000 IU of Vitamin D3. I developed bloating, across the chest and under the arms, swelling everywhere below the waist, a metallic taste in my throat and a general feeling like I really didn't want to do anything which to my way of thinking isn't good. Now, I've developed hyperthyroidism on the r/h side of my throat. A quick note the left tonsil was removed totally with malignant cancer in it and the frozen and normal biopsies came back with clear margins. I have a sneaking hunch that the medication he has me on in addition to the D3 which he finally came down to a 2000 IU capsule and the Crestor 10mg, Mybetriq 25 mg, Lisinopril 5 mg, and the Omeprazole 40 mg has created the thyroid problem in addition to the Vit D3 being low. Is there any chance that these drugs have created the problems that I seem to have gotten?

I save it for really bad days and then use a minimal dose. I lean on tylenol heavy. Pressure belts don't help in the long run. Osteopath said surgery was not a good option. Saw a specialist who mostly said exercise and stretch... yoga. Old enough that the final pain killer will come along soon enough.
