Btw theres an artbook with enemy descriptions and the person you mentioned being the "spear king" was actually a king that was in conflict with the spear king and was captured and sacrificed to the tower, the spear king is the guy on the manual and he lacked the shield like object that enemy has (which through a translator says that hes called Quidle Mandus of the mandas tribe", also the tower itself is an "ark" but it is described as plant like being that came from a dying world that needed other beings to live since it needs other beings energy. It crash landed and lost its 'thrusters' on earth and the reason it doesnt grow like a normal plant is due to the earth sunlight destroying its cells. It also mention it reverted back into a seed at first i think.
Something the artbook mentions is that the towers goal is "to sustain life" and fear its extinction. Some time later it realized it stored energy may run out but once creatures started entering the tower it realized that fusing itself with the creatures it may be able to create beings able to handle the surface, but all the creatures rejected this fusion and as stated the tower itself "grieved" as it seems to enjoy creating and sustaining life
it should be said the artbook mentions that the "spear" was a real object that was created by the tower as a way to give power to the ruler ie the spear king to capture kingdoms and "sacrifice" them which is just the tower fusion itself with humans . As time went on the spear "voice" (im assuming the "will" but the translation is a bit iffy). The spear lost it voice due to the tower essentially fusing with too many humans with alot of them being considered "failures". The spear king didnt know this and in his old age the spear "spoke" to him but its unknown if it was the tower or the kings mind going crazy. The king entered the tower never to return but mentioned to his people "keep sacrificing people until i return (this is iffy since the translator says until you return)". It should be mentioned the old man the guide in the beginning of the game lured you in into the tower along with the scout unit as mentioned in the manual.
This part explains the ending but the girl with the horns "Luflon" but also Rurufon, is considered the first successful fusion of the tower and a human being as all the other ones either died prematurely, lack intelligence or was considered a failure. The ending shows she able to conquer the "sun/light" that the plant was unable to and all the creatures inside. Due to her being considered a successful fusion the "will" of the tower doesnt effect her. It should be noted she herself doesnt know that she can survive the surface world and so entrust the player since shes under the belief only perfect beings (humans who can survive the surface of earth) are strong enough to destroy the tower/the greater will. Apperently she hates the tower for creating the spear since the Spear king killed her parents which were other fusions the tower conducted (the translation says just the generic word of plant whenever mention the tower but its obvious the tower/great will). It should be said but the npc that looks like Rurufon at the final boss is a "negative" luflon/rurufon that is under the influence of the tower but her birth is shrouded in mystery as said by the guide. I have no idea why she loses the horns though.
Also the setting is inspired by apperently cambodia/thailand and that in asia theres a lot of dense forest with ruins that nobody discovers for hundred of years. Makes sense since the art book mentions the great spear king kingdom after thousands of years and him disappearing was reduced down to a small tribe that still holds on the tradition of sacrificing people to the tower.
So you mentioning how the the being/god is "sad" is because it essentially think it failed in its mission to sustain life since it doesnt know that Rurufon was actually a success due to her connection to the tower being severed. So in the end her eye changing it showing that yes in its final moments its creation was able to walk onto the surface it crash landed on conquering the light of the world. Should also mention as a fun fact but the MC was just a security for explorers i think and that he was convinced to go into the tower since the old man said there was treasure inside from a lost kingdom.
I can link you the artbook (its just on internet archive in alright quality) and you probably translate better since i just used basic google translate and its 50/50 how accurate it is, the interview with the main director was hard to understand. Should also say I only translated like 15 pages of the 60ish page artbook the beginning which explains the backstory , some enemy bios and the interview, i didnt read the map guide or most of the enemies as there might be more missing information I didnt bother reading since its late af right now as I am typing this and just translated whatever caught my eye.
Therse alot of things that you obviously tell influenced there future games (pretty much the archetype in the souls game of a maiden helping you get stronger probably started in this game and considering how priscilla may be based on this character of Rurufon its not that much of a stretch.) The priscilla connection makes more sense to me since both of them are being that are "fusions" with Rurufon being half plant tower/human and priscilla being dragon/human, as well with Priscilla at one point in development being the "maiden" of dark souls 1.
I genuinely wonder how many Fromsoftware games that have "hidden lore " just dont have translated or unknown artbooks/guides and so the western fanbase thinks every game they make is purposely cryptic

I guess this means it's not the same universe as the original Shadow Tower or there was a retcon. Since Rurufon is definitively a demon in that one. I was expecting that this took place in the future of Shadow Tower PS1, the Crown became a spear and that the world of the original game was just one of the many worlds that the Tower landed on and infected over the years

For another obscure 1st person dungeon crawler in a similar vein to these early Fromsoft games, check out Hungry Ghosts (PS2), which also sadly was never localised. Peace.

I think maybe the best way to describe the Great Will in this game would probably be like a cosmic pitcher plant. However, unlike a pitcher plant, the Great Will is something that gained self awareness but was never meant to, and is now trapped within a "body" that cannot move or feel. It is as much a prisoner of the tower as the player is, but unlike the player doesn't even have the illusion of one day gaining freedom. It only has endless existential despair, devoid of hope.

Shadow Tower 1: What if King's Field but spookier (not to be confused with Echo Night who's more of an adventure game)
    Shadow Tower Abyss: ...G U N
I'll admit, I chuckled when I saw the thumbnail in my feed; I mainly associate you with the action games videos and the Yu-Gi-Oh videos rather than you talking about other game genres (the Dino Crisis video being a notable exception). Shadow Tower Abyss being more of an RPG with slower action compared to Armored Core who's more "swift action" oriented. I wish you a good time in this FromSoft mood!

imagine buying this on release, taking it home, finding out it is all in japanese......that was soul crushing, i kept on until i reached a dead end and gave up and threw the game inside the closet, over a decade later i found out u have to give an NPC a certain item, he would leave and found the item u needed to move on on his now empty seat.
u should have talked more about how the enemies carry their dead, how a flying ant u could destroy the wings and it now had to walk...but seeing 2 ants carrying a dead ant to their base was insane.
the part where ur eyes adjust to the darkness was insane.
the fact that ur avatar looks like scribbles is a nice touch.
great game, i just wish there was a fan made patch in the early 2000s or at least a translation online....
i can't wait for the KF video...

I miss it so much, there is still nothing like it in over a decade. the only way i was exposed to gungrave, berserk and samurai champloo/cowboy bebop was through my older brother's childhood best friend who worked at a video easy, he would pop up, and was nice enough to give me VHS copies of them, miss recording the shows on VHS as well. those were some good years, where i can say i used to watch tv. i haven't enjoyed tv mostly for over a decade since. there's just not good tv shows or movies played anymore. the new sbs and viceland was alright, the movies still play, but the adult swim and tv shows have changed and left.

play at 130% emulation speed for a more exciting and responsive experience. Shadow Tower is a bit like an Iron Maiden song, a bit longer and slower than it has any business being but still amazing if you just get through it.

Ok so, gemerally in these older kings field style games, you can get a kind of "set bonus". Iirc, wearing all the samurai gear just gives you a stat buff. I think. I could be wrong on this.

I've seen a few videos on this game (or at least 1 other) and never really felt the vibe till now. It legit does look like one of my video game nightmares and it makes me want it even more. Really want a Soulslike interpretation of this mostly cause I prefer 3rd over 1st person. The idea of a isekai Soulslike where you play as a largely plain clothes character that is genuinely an outsider of the world and not just "new in town" is interests me. Plus pulling out a gun on a demon would be rad.

The problem is the modern guns, third person shooters are rarely good, so it's better to be in first person.

If you haven't already, you should play Blood Will Tell? It's the most "unique '7/10' PS2 action game" I've ever played. I think you'd love it, it'd be interesting to hear what you think.

It would be fantastic to see Fromsoft do some kind of remake, reboot, or spiritual successor for this game. It would be a nice change from the Soulsborne formula we're used to.

To be honest, the difficulty curve wasn't so massive even at the start. RNG will give you potions but even then I was never out of items. It was all about just wanting to stay very cautious. Using guns were a last resort or for enemies I didn't want to even risk getting hit by. Very comfortable adventure, just requires some caution and thinking. Great game.

Oh man , Ive played the first shadow tower recently and while its really awesome and has sich thick atmossphere, there are areas and parts of the game that are genuine bad and even makes it harder than Dark souls .
I gave up on the game because the fire world just broke me .
I hope the sequel is a bit better designed in its levels and even less hard .
Kingsfield 1-3 is rather easy when compared to the first shadowtower game.
But dude , its been a very long time since a game kicks my ass without any mercy .
