I work with seniors and have for the last 14 years. You would be shocked how many of them want to get brought to a facility. It's not the grim sort of place you think it is. I work activities. Take them out to eat once a week, we go shopping on Wednesdays, arts and crafts and stuff, museums at least twice a month, we bake, we go to the park, keep up with sports, and on top of that you never have to make a meal and you're cleaning and laundry get done for you. It's not all upside but it's nowhere near as awful as people make it sound
I too work in a care facility. I do their hair. And most of them are pretty satisfied with things. The part that most are annoyed with is the fact that they can't do what they used to do (walk, run, dance). I love helping them feel a little better about their appearances.
Great episode. Many years ago, I was a new member of staff in a nursing home and this quite elderly man walked up to another staff member and asked "where is my mother?" The staff member told him she was at the beauty salon. I initially thought he had given a reasonable excuse to a man with dementia to calm him. As it turns out, there was a beauty salon in-house, and the man, in his eighties, was indeed the visiting son of a still-mobile 102 year old resident with a sound mind. I learned a lot that day about preconceptions and not passing judgement on situations until I had most, if not all, of the information needed to do so.
