Gwin ar C'hallaoued - Breton Celtic War Chant

- Vocals & arrangement by Farya Faraji. This is a Breton song from Brittany, France. Often misinterpreted as a drinking song, the lyrics are actually from an old war chant about the Bretons raiding the French and taking their wine, whose taste they preferred to that of their apple-based drinks. I arranged this in modern folk Breton style with a chord progression, a fiddle, the bombarde instrument, and a bagpipe.
Lyrics in Breton:

English translation:
Better white grape wine
so ripe!
Fire fire, steel oh steel, fire, fire, steel and fire!
Oak, oak, earth and waves, earth and earth and oak!
Better the new wine,
Than mead.
Better sparkling wine,
Than mead,
Better shining wine.
Better is the French wine,
Red blood and white wine.
It's Frenchmen's blood that flows,
It's Frenchmen's blood!
I drank wine and blood,
In the savage battle,
I drank wine and blood,
Blood and wine nourish,
Whosoever drink them,
Blood, wine and dance,
For you O sun,
Blood, wine and dance,
And dance and song,
O wine,
And dance and song!
Dance of the sword,
In circle,
Dance of the sword!
Danse de l'épée livide.
Feu! feu!...
Danse de l'épée sauvage
du roi;
danse de l'épée sauvage.
Feu! feu!...
Epée! grand roi
sur le champ de bataille;
Epée! grand roi.
Feu, feu!... - Hudba

Banger lyrics
Farya you should do a song in cornish, its a beautiful yet endangered language, very close to breton
One of the oldest chants recorded by the Barzhaz Breizh dating from around the Carolingian Empire. Bretons(Britons who got exiled from Britain during the anglosaxon invasion) loved grape wine, but as they coudn't grow grapes they did what they knew the best: take it by force of arms.
The Britons you mention ought to be noted as having been specifically people from Cornwall and Devon. This is why Breton is closer to Cornish than either is to Welsh while all three are still classified as Brythonic Celtic languages.
@@lysanamcmillan7972 Yep
@@lysanamcmillan7972 Hello ! When the Celts from Cornwall and elsewhere crossed the Channel they were welcomed by the Celts from Armorica, almost all of whom still spoke a Celtic language very close to their own. Everything went well between the tribes who had been dating each other since very very long time
The song opening with,
"wine is better than mead"
(which I agree with);
Those are already fighting words.
The violence that follows is, both, welcome and unavoidable.
Strange thing for Celts to say since the Celts are credited with a lot of Mead Production and who introduced it to the Romans.
The first line is about white grape wine being better than blackberry wine. But you're right, these guys still prefer the French wine it looks like😂
@@samsmith2635 And we're proud of it, as a Breton myself mead (Chouchen), local cider (which is simply an alcoolised apple juice) and beer are my way to go
except some wine mead is simply better than most of them
Those are some metal lyrics, damn. Excellent as always, Farya. The bagpipes especially, those are always a treat to listen to. Keep up the good work!
Try the version from Atelier Skald, there it is called "Tir ha Tan". Then you have the metal sound- on a Trossinger Leier.
Please, Farya, more Celtic songs!
It kinda _is_ a drinking song...at least from the Breton perspective 😁
This is great! Please keep making older authentic music.
I waited so long for another Breton song ❤
So am I. Very happy with this!
Same here, honestly it was worth the wait 🎶
Dadasham Farya you are doing a great job and you deserve a lot more.
When I read the comments, I'm happy to see that people don't hate other nationalities and are even interested in each other's culture and nationality.
And this is definitely because of your work. موفق باشی برار
My favorite medieval European song now in Farya's arrangement
Outra bomba céltica vindo aí...
A espera da música que retrate a cultura portuguesa também!
Edit: Meu Deus, a gaita-de-fole nunca me decepciona... Meu instrumento favorito, ainda sendo tocado lindamente pelo musicista favorito; uau!
Really makes me proud of my Breton heritage
a tua é moura, tuga iludido.
Listening to the songs of this channel while I'm writing my novel.....❤❤
(Give them the wine and maybe nobody gets hurt)
I feel strong vibes of the third part of "Ev chistr 'ta, Laou!"
Eu Chistr ta Laou sometimes has part of this added to it.
May the god of goosebumps be praised, I personally need more Celtic content
Excellent as always can’t emphasise on that enough
Best wishes
Cool! I'm gonna show this song to my french teacher who's from Bretagne
Cette musique c'est sublime et spectaculaire pour mes oreilles !
Brilliant like always! I'm so glad to find you on CZcams my compatriot!❤
Another week, another banger. Thanks a million, your music is always top shelf :)
I am on probably my fourth listen, this one being yet another one of your arrangements or compositions living rent-free inside my head even long after I've heard it.
I was ready for another masterpiece 😁👌🔥🔥🔥
👌Bretonic entertainment
What can I say that I haven't said a thousand times over about your music before? In a word, sublime. You did it again. More of this.
We going to raze Rome with this one 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥

Превосходно!!! Вы супер,Фария!!!❤ Музыкальный талант, изучение истории и языков. Низкий поклон вам за творчество!
Hello Farya, huge fan of your music, especially your Iranian compositions. I was wondering if you could cover the Gathas as well? Your pronunciations are absolutely perfect keep up the good work!
Salute to the best artist in the world!
Masterpiece! So question: Is this how Breton music has sounded like independent of other "Celtic" music or is this an imitation of how clearly influenced by the Irish Breton music can be?
I'd say the fiddle and the way it's played is definitely a more recent, conscious decision for the Bretons to imitate Irish music, but the rest of the similarities are probably just generic Northwestern European aspects shared across most traditions there
@@faryafaraji Fair enough! Merci pour ton réponse !
Nice ! Thank you Farya, and always so rich in history !
Personally, I sang it with the boyscouts as such :
Vive le feu clair du camp, vive le feu clair !
Vive le feu clair du camp, vive le feu clair !
Feu, feu, joli feu, ton ardeur nous réjouit !
Feu, feu, joli feu, chante dans la nuit !
Vive la chaleur du feu, vive la chaleur, vive la couleur du feu, vive la couleur... :-)
@@EllaBee90 Exactement !
C'est très beau
Awesome work!
You do great work man
J’adore !
Incredible!!!
This sounds quite amazing
Great song as always! I own a baglama (Long neck) and have trying to figure out how to play your song "Hikanatoi". Do you have the tabs/notes posted anywhere, or if not would you be able to give any pointers? All I know so far from listening is that It's In the Hijaz scale (I think) and I'm assuming AGD tuning. Thanks again for so many great songs, God Bless! 🙏☦
I can't read or write any kind of notation myself so unfortunately there's no tabs or notes, but to help as best I can:
The scale is what we'd call the Harmonic Minor in Western terminology; so the first tetrachord (four notes) is that of the minor scale, and the last four are indeed that of Hijazkar. The tuning on that song is A-E-A, and I only use the main string course, the lowest one closest to the knee, to play the melody. Hope it helps!
@@faryafaraji This helps a Ton! It would have taken me a long time to figure that out on my own. I'm also super impressed that your able to compose/preform all these songs without any written notation, that's amazing bro! mad respect!
Breizh ma Bro
I know for a fact that you love them bagpipes :)))) congrats for this special piece my guy
Great, thanks ❤😊🎉
This is awesome! Honestly , it is so badass that I'm thinking about getting French wine to drink while I'm putting on my armor today. When I get some ribbing from my crew , I'll play this, and they will know.
Trugarez, Farya

Parfait
Love your work!! It became my favorite thing to listen to when studying.
nice
Fantastic music, as always!
I have a question: Am I able to use your music in my own monetized videos if I give credit to you in the description? Kinda like Adrian von Ziegler does it? If not then I totally understand.
Wow génial les bretons sont partout 😂
You should make a song about alexios komnenos
❤
Hail dir and greetings frome me the Allfather the Golden Dragon Ur / Odin
First to another banger
So is this the original version of Vin Gaulois or is it your own creation?
This is the original, Vin Gaulois is simply a later French translation
Tajik songs possible🇹🇯🇮🇷
The opening sounded almost Pontian.
👍
Thus makes me wanna play bretagne in ck3
I am part Irish but normally don't like celtic. music. It's too "twee" for me. I like the modern nordic folk stuff more. But I like ALL your stuff. hahaha. Off to find you on Apple Music
The lyrics translation is not full. Some verses are missing in English
HEY< ONCE AGAIN I advice you to cover Oj Chmielu Chmielu, the odlest known written Polish song :)
