Beijing remained silent as French warships conducted joint exercises with the Philippines and the US in the South China Sea. Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping arrived in France on May 5 to start his visit as planned. We believe that under the cloud of the Russia-Ukraine war, it’s difficult for the Chinese Communist Party CCP’s top leadership to escape from the internal and external dilemma.

France is unwilling to engage in conflict over the Taiwan Straight, or over the status of Taiwan, although it has send high level government delegations to Taiwan in recent years. However, France is not a neutral party in the Pacific. More than Germany has, France has long-standing island territories in the Pacific that it probably wants to defend in the outbreak of war over the Taiwan Straight (I.e. an invasion or blockade by the PLA of that island). While Taiwan is far away from France's Pacific possessions, it is close enough to be involved in a global order conflict if China decides to invade Taiwan. Xi Jinping is only in France hoping to drive a wedge between EU partners by his fake diplomacy and empty promises. However, I think this summit meeting with President Macron is abortive as France only wants peace in the Pacific, but not peace at any cost (territories). Noteworthy, that the United States (the most powerful country in the Pacific region) is unwilling to provoke war either. However, Xi believes his navy has superior numbers to the United States and is now using grey zone attacks in the Philippines (grey zone meaning physically blocking and colliding with Philiippines supply vessels in their own EEZ (Philippines) with large warships disguised as Coast Guard and spraying the Philippines ships with water cannon). I assume the French government is well informed of all these developments.
