    the real fun with air suspension is designing a rolling sleeve bag and piston to get the right spring rate for the ride hight and then adding variable displacement, get a few old OEM air suspension struts and cut them up you will learn lots!

    I should point out an even better set up is one that is hydraulic both for steering but in particular braking applications. "No air compressor or compression necessary." More weight depending on the engineering..but again adding an awesome amount of "braking force" if that is possible after market wise of course.

    • @i1Tesla
      @i1Tesla  Před 2 lety +1

      No because water will form in the tank anyway. You need to drain the tank every month or more to get the water out. Keeping the water out of the brains is more important.

      @mikepeace6694 Před 2 lety +2

      I don't remember the spacing because I changed it after everything was finished. I made it so I can lift it higher and not lay on the ground when aired out because I have a carbon fiber body kit coming. But What I have fount out is you will need to adjust the spacing on how high or low you want the ride hight. You want he bags to be in the 990 PSI range to have a comfortable ride.

    I wonder how well this system will work when towing - especially with ride height sensors. Model X auto adjusts when towing - which makes towing MUCH MUCH smoother. It's a shame Model Y is limited to 3500lb towing and 350lb hitch weight. I wish someone would figure out the upgrades required to make it 5000lb/500lb rated (is there also a way to make it officially legal?!).

  • @johnyoungquist6540
    @johnyoungquist6540 Před 2 lety

    I think air ride is over rated and widely misunderstood. It makes good sense in applications where the load varies widely like a transport truck.
    If you want a smooth ride for your cargo you will specify air ride. The issue is: a trailer will carry about 50,000 lbs. If it is sprung for that weight at 10,000 lbs it is way too stiff. Probably equivalent to no springs at all. So adjustable air ride is very useful because the load can vary widely. But in a car that weights 5000 lbs and has a much smaller load variation a fixed spring system works fine. Air after all is just a spring which you can adjust. I have had 2 model S cars with air and I can adjust the ride height about 2 inches. Big Deal! who cares, what does that do. They claim you can lower the car on the highway for better efficiency but the gain is negligible if any. If you think the car is cooler 2 inches lower then grow up get a life. I drove a spring model S once and didn't see a big difference. My first P85D was do punishly stiff that Tesla quietly replaced the entire suspension at no charge. My subsequent P100D was okay. My wife's model Y is okay but a little stiff. The notion that a car with air ride is smoother or better than well engineered springs is hard to prove. The 3 & Y succeed nicely without it. Changing tire pressure will have a bigger effect. The increased cost and complexity is substantial as you demonstrate. I wouldn't give up my frunk to have it.
