I remember the sickness was forever
I remember snuff videos
Cold Septembers, the distances we covered
The fist fights on the beach, the bizzies round us up
Do it all again next week
Embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
Embarrass yourself for someone
Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom’s head in
Still bugs me now
That’s the thing it lingers
And claws you when you’re down
I was far too scared to hit him
But I would hit him in a heartbeat now
That’s the thing with anger
It begs to stick around
So it can fleece you of your beauty
And leave you spent with nowt to offer
It makes you hurt the ones who love you
You hurt them like they’re nothing
See I spent my teens enraged
Spiralling in silence
And arm myself with a grin
Cos I was always the fuckin’ joker
Buried in the humour
Amongst the white noise and boys’ boys
Locker room talkin’ lads’ lads
Drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
A mirrored picture of my old man
Oh god the kid’s a dab hand
Canny chanter but he looks sad
God, the kid looks so sad
She said the debt, the debt, the debt
So I thought about shifting gear
And how she wept and wept and wept
Luck came and died round here
I see my mother
The DWP see a number
She cries on the floor encumbered
I’m seventeen going under

It awesome to see Sam Fender start blowing up over here in the States. I’ve been jamming to his tracks for a few years now and Ive been doing my best to spread the word. Awesome performance! Keep putting out these killer tracks gents!
Great to hear this, this guy deserves worldwide success!

Yes! We need more of his music in the states! So good
I keep hearing him on Sirius Alt Nation, I hope the momentum continues. Hope he tours here soon!
He's fire! In Cali, had not heard of him ,did not see this Fallon performance, then saw him on Brits awards 2 days ago perform 17 Going Under and said out loud, "Who the hell is that????".Then he won! Fantastic.
The first time my 71 year-old ears heard this song on Portland's KINK radio it was like being hit with that proverbial ton of bricks. One of those rare occurrences when you know you've just heard an anthem that you're gonna love for the rest of your life.
This song feels like it was written for all of us who didn’t have it on a plate growing up, who have lived a thousand lives before our life has even begun, thank you Sam ❤️

This 👏
Pal it’s been like this since the 80’s. Then before back in the early century folks lived horrible lives. Just keep things in context.
@@channelbree always in context but this is an anthem for our time for now!
This will be a classic song, timeless… 30 years from now it will still be sung and known
Very true
Baby Bruce ain’t he
what a bloody INCREDIBLE performance! so proud of you all.

Love how the accent and dialect shine through in his songs. I’m from the NE myself (Northumberland) so it is lush to hear. He’s awesome! What a talent 👏 👏
I’m American, so I’m not really familiar with too much of regional accents in England. I know Manchester because of Liam, and Noel for example. I am curious, after watching interviews of sam fender, there sounds like there’s a good deal of Scottish in his accent! Is that a thing with the NE?
@@Aidanhatesyouall some of our words can sound similar to Scottish (we will both say “doon” for “down” for example), but Scottish and geordie/Northumbrian accents are very different. I can understand how they may sound similar to someone who is not from around these parts, though.
A lot of love for NE and Northumberland, my mum from Ashington, even though I was born and grew up in Devon still feel the connection! Sam Fender is destined for massive things, as he would say, he's lush
@@andrewhall983 I was born and raised in Ashington! Live just 10 mins up the road from there now. Northumberland is a fantastic place. Beautiful beaches, lovely countryside and not too far from the “Toon”. Totally agree on Sam. He thoroughly deserves all the success in the world.
Great talent
The fact Liam Gallagher speaks highly of him and Ronnie wood said him self at the awards Sam is his favourite is a definite nod of approval, proper band with good written songs about life

100 % agree
He's our Springsteen.
He’s gaining popularity in North America too. This song is a hit here in Vancouver.

Then you haven't heard many songs.
@@davidofergals6947 I like a lot of different styles of music plus it’s just my opinion
@@davidofergals6947lol who says that. Stfu.
He lives round the corner from me. Canny lad and well deserved. North Shields is proud man!
I'm a sixty something old man...and I have seen a lot of brilliant performers and performances in my time and young Fender is absolutely up there with the best of them. Genuinely talented guy, who can write lyrics with the wisdom of a fifty year old, and he's got a fabulous group of guys playing with him. A reason for optimism in a time that needs all the good vibes we can muster.
Well said. I’m close to your age and have been thinking about how his lyrics seem beyond his young age.

@@DB-cm1fx Jackson Browne profundity in his lyrics ❤️
I'm even older than you and also seen many brilliant artists live in my life, including Hendrix, Joni Mitchell and many others. Sam is up there with them! His music touches my soul.
I'm in my thirties and my dad's in his sixties. We bond over Sam Fender. We're both absolutely bonkers about him.
I'm 66 years old. Grew up during the " British Invasion". I heard Mr. Fender and this song by chance on Music Choice- adult alternative channel. I would have guessed he was from Ireland or Scotland but 17 going under stirred up something in my Scots- Irish heritage DNA that made this old man want to dance an Irish jig. I am now a big fan and will tell all my friends( the ones of us still living) about Sam Fender and his music!
He’s English! Not Scottish or Irish
This kid can write songs that touch your soul. Pure class
Sam Fender gives me hope for the future of music.
Same here
“I was far to scared to hit him, but I’d hit him in a heartbeat now” class
How Adele won best album over this guy is an absolute tragedy. Listen to the lyrics in this song alone. Raw and honest, telling a story that anyone from a working class family can relate too. Even the compassion of the music is so different to every other artist. Best album of the last couple of years by a mile. By god the man is a talented song writer.
I agree or even Dave too both their albums are lyrically much better than Adele's.
Idk man Adele’s album is a fucking masterpiece especially the lyrics
I disagree, he is evolving like an amazing musician and he will be. But Adele’s album was a bloody masterpiece.
Yes ! I totally agree.
Adele is crap
His 1st album was brilliant however this second album has pushed him to catastrophic new heights. I don’t even think he’s aware of how bloody good he actually is. Such a incredible, honest, talented individual
I reckon stratospheric is the word that's needed :)
I can’t put into words how much I adore this man

@@Teddy-ez9qq that’s very sweet, Thankyou!!🥺♥️
This song will be iconic for generations to come. Genius songwriting.
I’m a 57 year old music fan .. he blows me away. Love him x
one of the best songs ever written and performed. i cannot get through it without tears
Ashamed to say I had never heard one of his songs before this. He has himself a new fan now! Superb!
Just download everything he’s done. It’s all awesome..enjoy.
You’re in for a treat my friend….
You’re not the one
The dying light
The borders
Will we talk
Spit of you
Dead boys
Are my favourites but if you download both of his albums and hit shuffle you’re in for a treat. This guy is super talented and deserves all of his success.
Try this songs: Get You Down, Saturday, The Borders, Will We Talk, Getting Started, Leave Fast. Trust me you will enjoy all songs. Check Sam Fender 2021 TRNSMT Festival. This Band is from another Level. Amazing!
Same, he's incredible
@@AL-np5br Love "Play God", esp the live version at TRNSMT 2021, in fact the whole set is bang on
Most accomplished performance of the night by far, no gimmicks or dancers prancing round, just Sam, the band and an awesome song.
What a class performance man!
“I see my mother, the DWP sees a number”
Very powerful and honest lyrics.
Class lyric
Incredible.
Proper emotional lyric for me. Hits close to home that whole verse.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
“She said the debt, the debt, the debt, so I thought about shifting gear”
I’ve only just realised that means he’s thinking about selling drugs to support his mam.
I’ll never forget when Sams saxophone player went on the bar stool at the strawberry when the takeover went threw. Unreal night
This guy is incredible… raw talent with a pinch of Springsteen and Paolo nutini…
Best performance of the night by a mile.👍👍👍
most definitely
He was good but Dave was the best
@@TheJediBird nope! Fender proper music!
i’ve never been more proud after following him for the last few years
Best band on the Brits for ages. Cracking lad and I love everyone of his songs. Great backing too
Love his ability for the vocal to be as strong as the record
True thoughtful music still exists and is recognised. For those of us who didn't grow up rich and had only a single parent to look after us, and who struggled to do so. This hits home. God bless anybody in that situation now. Your relentlessness will never be in vain.
I love this lad he hits me right in the feels he has the ability to take me back to when times were good and bad, I'm a Teesside Lass transplanted else where because of no jobs 27years ago, and yet this man right here is bringing my youth to life in my head and for me that is pure GOLD. The saxophone is just sublime. He is one hell of a gifted writer. I don't think this year Adele deserved the award she dropped it in November and her return has killed any interest I had in her. Diva Adele can get lost bring back the London lass.
SAM IS PHENOMENAL
This guy has a reare ability to enrich lives, during these challenging times, and that performance gave me goosebumps..

as a geordie born lass who moved to teesside in my early years, the connection i have to his music is absolutely unbeatable
Up the Boro !
None of them have forgotten their roots…… playing with a toon top on man 😍
what a voice this kid has. So much depth to it, and even more so live..
Thank god the lyrics in Sam’s songs haven’t been censored or re-worded to avoid upsetting a few. Raw openness depicting life is a beautiful art form.
Hear that no auto tune, real talent right there
Britain has got a lot of great alternative and rock acts at the moment. One of the best songs from 2021.
Honestly, to be on stage singing your heart out with a bunch of lads that are where you're from, singing words about struggle that resonate with people from places like yours all over the world...well that has to be fucking great. Good lad Sam Fender, you're doing your people proud
The fact he actually sounds decent at The Brits shows he can sound great anywhere!! Ever noticed no one sounds good there? Front of house must be asleep during performances.
As a 90s indie kid...this guy brings it all back...amazing talent .
I can’t help but think how proud his mam must be watching this as a mother myself ❤️
This kids a very talented song writer…the real deal & great to see a working class lad reach the top. Finally someone actually saying something in their songs.
The echoes from the crowd when sam hit "I was far too scarred to hit him, But i would hit him in a heartbeat now" juz🔥🔥
About time the world woke to the greatness that is Sam Fender!!!! This young guy is ahead lyrically, interpretation of his emotions through song and the melodies!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 cannot wait to see him live! His music is both raw yet intentional and thought through ❤️🙏🏾
Very true
Sam, you make me proud to be from Newcastle. You friggen smashed it man!
Seventeen going under was the first song I heard from sam. Definitely a fan of him
👍🎸🎶
They're reactions are everything. The "look mum we made it!" at the end is heart-warming.
Just discovered this lad. Bloody hell! What a pair of albums! It’s been absolutely ages since the last time I enjoyed some proper new music!
The good vibes from 80s are coming up with this boy!!! Sam Fender is brilliant, he is a new hope!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Well deserved
I'm literally glad to be in this generation
Love you from Iran

Man on the sax is absolutely too cool
He’s genuinely one of the best songwriters the UK has produced in a very long time. Springsteen allusions are obvious, but he’s his own man doing his own spellbinding things. Very raw and chilling lyrics with the background of this musical euphoria. A song for a generation.
BANGER OF A TUNE. No matter where I am when I hear you can’t help but GET RIGHT INTO IT.
Sam Fender very quickly became my favourite artist last year. Some of the best music I've heard in a while.
I’m so proud of him. I’m glad he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves.
So damn happy he is getting the attention and success he deserves!!! The future of music has hope with Sam Fender.
This kid sings from the heart with power and emotion and most of all a voice we want to listen too ....class
That smile at the end tho...he deserves all the fame 👏👏👏

Nice to see someone so young writing about real-life and having such an honest way of putting it out
There. You know when an artist believes in what they write and what they are singing to the world and this young man is all heart. Captivating and Powerful, can't wait to look into more of his music! Thank you Sam!!
The sax the sax the sax!!!! Excellent
The more I listen to this performance the more talent you realise these guys have. The lyrics are unreal. The music is world class and the enjoyment on all of thier faces as they do what they love is the icing on the cake. “I see my mother, the DWP see a number” strong. Best band I have seen live for 10 years
THIS GAVE ME LITERAL CHILLS. The energy of this performance was insane and words can't express how much I love these guys 🧡
Can't wait to see this guy live! Few weeks to go can't bloody wait!
Smile at the end says it all. Mint.
Wales loves Sam…And all Geordies.
I'm 51 and this song still resonates with my own life
Some of the best lyrics in a song of all time
This mans music is a major blessing
peaked at 3 in the charts. its about time a band got back up there. rock and roll never dies
Another Geordie destined to be a legend... Bobby Robson, Lindisfarne, Gazza, Shearer, Mark Knopfler, Brian Johnston, Brendan Foster, Hank Marvin, Jimmy Nail, Bryan Ferry, and Sam Fender.
I'm coming home Newcastle, you can keep ya London wine, All walk the streets all day all neet, for a bottle of the river Tyne... I'm coming home
I'm so happy for him, this warms my heart
thank you for being genuine. it truly makes the biggest difference. you’ll always be a favorite
Class, love everything you have written songs from the heart and your own life experiences working class hero .....I can talk to anyone reminds me of my relationship with my dad
Best performance ever😀. I’m in my fifties but Sam reminds me of Bruce - first concert ever seen in the 80s. Constant on repeat.
I lost my Dad recently and this song reminds me of growing up and my memories good and bad with my family and especially Dad
I'm glad Sam and his band have the opportunity to open for Bruce Springsteen in Italy this spring. They have similar soulfulness in their music and it will help more people learn about Sam's phenomenal talent!
So proud of how far he’s came the last few years, putting Newcastle and Shields on the map ❤️
Absolute class from the young fella onwards and upwards.. nobody cany stop u or deter the talent he has. Fucking quality
GOD HE IS BEYOND INCREDIBLE AND IT''S BEYOND MY UNDERSTANDING TO WHY HE ISN''T MORE RECOGNIZED.
the future of British rock!
The AUDIENCE tho!? YO… hyped af. Love it!
You must be proud to be who you are and the dam good music you play 👍😎👏👏🍺
Must be one of my favourite performances of Seventeen Going Under from him! He's so good!
Sam Fender is a blessed talent. Born to do it. Deserves to headline Glastonbury and surely will.
Seen him play yesterday in Coventry. Stole the festival 👍👍👍
Nice to see the lad doing well. His band are on-point too. No auto-tune there, just talent.
His honesty and his humanity shine through in his songwriting. This young man is going to have some career and he's going to help a lot of kids cope, thanks to his music. Much love from India.
I got to see Sam Fender in Adelaide, South Australia at the Harvest Festival. Amazing. Much love ❤
It's time Sam makes his way to the US. He's been unable to travel to the country due to the pandemic, but now is time for him to get over here. His music is dynamic & has an energy currently unmatched. Let's go Sam!
Apparently he's living in New York for a little while whilst working on his 3rd album. Which I'm already so excited for
Proper genuine lad keeps on providing good music in who people can relate to.
The Angel of the North
Where did this guy come out of? Genius is a word to describe his music. I'm hooked!
Special artist. Special, special artist.
