  • Today I'm chatting with the creator of the 1000 Hours outside movement. Ginny offers hands-on, practical ways to get your children off of electronics and out in nature while also inspiring you to do the same. She encourages us that our kids can do less of those "enriching activities," that sometimes cost a fortune, and yet gain so much more... all from more time in nature.

Could you start listing the books that are mentioned by your guests and yourself in the description or in the comments, please? I know I can't be the only only but I listen while moving and have had a hard time going back to find them in the show to write down. Thanks for the consideration!! :)

I love this conversation. My 4-1/2 year old granddaughter just enrolled in a class in Baltimore where they spend at least half their time outside, no matter what’s going on, rain, snow, heat, etc. she will be here in Mississippi for 3 weeks during Christmas. We live on 10 acres so now I know what we will be doing every day!

We lived in Rural Farm country and our Kids loved the Play dates we took turns going to friends homes and I and other moms would pool resources and had just as much fun hiking or swimming or picnics etc. Best times and we all looked forward to that

Get an old wall or desk phone with a land line. This makes you stand/sit by the phone to use it. You can add a answering machine with caller ID to catch those really important calls. We still use ours.

Homesteading is NOT an instant solution to this problem, because there is a difference between relaxing and playing outside and working outside. I found that we were really good with the working outside part, but it has taken intentionality and effort to take the time to enjoy the outdoors and have my kids enjoy the outdoors. I always think that I want to spend all my time outside, but I really don’t because the great outdoors are exhausting. Even to sit in the shade on a warm day for hours at a historical reenactment, I find myself completely exhausted by processing the bright light, regulating my temperature, sitting up straight in my costume 😂 But it is a good exhaustion. The kind that makes sleep sweet.

Good info, even if we don't have kids around any more. BTW Jill, we live in the Arctic 2.0 up here in Saskatchewan LOL.

Also, college doesn’t necessarily mean success ❤️

The older generation born during 1900s are so used to hard work, and dealing with minimal resources. Have noticed how so many of this generation celebrate Century Birthdays. We need to take a lesson from this

All I ever did was work as a kid. Play for me was being told by my best friend's Dad to get out there and mow *HIS* Lawn and chop and stack *HIS* wood.
Then he would berate my BFF for me having proper table manners and him not.
    Gee thanks BFF Dad!
