Ginny is a Michigan homeschooling mother of five and the founder of 1000 Hours Outside. She is a thought-leader in the world of nature-based play and its benefits for children. One of her top priorities is to inspire parents to invest in spending time in God’s creation with their children. Her 1000 Hours Outside Challenge spans the globe and many people from all walks of life look to her for inspiration as well as practical tips on how to put down the screens and get outside. Ginny has a BS in Mathematics and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Michigan and is also a speaker, author and illustrator.

As a single mom of an 18 month old, this episode was such a blessing to me. I try to take my daughter outside at least once a day even if it’s only for 30 minutes sometimes I will literally just push her in the stroller around the driveway. I found a cute little music and dance class at the library we go to every week but that’s only for 30 minutes. I often feel so much guilt because I work from home so I’m doing what I can but my time is limited and also….I’m tired lol. It’s refreshing to hear that it’s normal to go through this phase when you have littles. Thank you! ❤️
Daily walks with our children is such a beautiful memory. I have found our walks or park days and storytimes are when our children open up to love and bonding. These are the foundation of childhood...school takes only a short time before lunch daily plus reading in the afternoon.
I so appreciate what she said about friendship!! It can be so hard especially with little ones but I feel so encouraged to keep trying and inviting other moms.

I was always outdoorsy but somehow struggled when starting as a mom that way. Free forest school changed my life. Lots of great resources out there to get outside for those looking. Thanks for your additions to that pool of knowledge ladies🤗

Europeans invest in proper clothing for the weather. There is no "bad weather", excluding major extremes of course. There are so many fascinating things to see/experience in the rain, ice, and snow. When my son was little I would go pick up a family of kids and take them with us to a park or trail, and let the mom have some time to herself. I found that there were far less "no shows and last minute cancellations", lol. I have an only child so it was worth it to me to take on the extra responsibility. Making mom friends is a lot harder, and it gets worse when the kids get into the preteen and teen years.
Also thanks for talking about the rejection of trying to create community/events. It's party of the reason I don't know I will continue with homeschool because I am so tired of arranging things
Texas mom of 6 here. My real problem is the summer... the kids go outside for 5 minutes and complain that it's too hot! Going to the pool is not always an option. Please do a video about getting kids outside in hot weather.

Im more north but we complain about the summer heat too. I do my walk/outside time early in the morning when it’s slightly cooler. It sets the day nice! And go out in the rain (not thunder though).
When my kids were small and they said they were bored I would give them a job. But letting them get bored makes them think of things to do or outside the box. I was told that kids will not do things they don't think they can do. ie climb trees and counter tops. They get hurt most of the time when someone freaks out. I always told the kids that if they cannot climb something, they were to little. I thinks people should let their kids try things. My youngest is now 19.
I found this podcast episode so fascinating! I’m looking forward to reading some of the books that she’s mentioned. And I loved the concept ‘What does this season have to offer?’. I’m a Canadian who dreads winter but I’m going to try and have a new attitude this year 😊

I had to laugh (in a good way) because when my boys were young I sent them outside EVERYDAY! I thought I was just saving my sanity but it was really good for them! One winter day it was raining and the snow melted but they were outside and made “mudmen”! I did have to have them get undressed on the back porch but they had a blast!

You were right Lisa , when the MayApples pop up we start looking for moral mushrooms! I love this , I grew up playing in every corner of the farm and woods all year long , skating on the swamp , sledding playing in the snow for hours ! And swimming in the creek, building huts in the woods ,tunnels in the hay mow in the big barn ,biking, hiking , fishing , forging . catching lightning bugs after dark etc etc . Our children did the same . No cell phones no TV . And let’s not forget chores ! Hoeing those long rows in the garden !I feel sorry for children that don’t have those opportunities!
I always think hot soup and hot chocolate taste so much better after we have been out in the cold. So treats are my winter motivation. :) Thank you for the podcasts! You're such an inspiration and have helped me learn so much about taking care of my family and enjoying my home and simple living.

This is inspiring! I struggle sooo so much with getting outside in colder weather (which is about 8 months of the year where I live in Canada 😫). -40 degrees plus wind is just too much for me lol! I don’t think we could ever do 1000 hours because of the extreme cold, but I am feeling inspired to get outside way more during these summer months!

I would take some snow...the rain is pretty but it's just grey. Snow seems bright and sparkling and it brings its own sports. We do rainy days walks too

As a kid I wasn't happy until I touched the very tip top of the tree. My momma would yell from the house, "Brenda I am gonna beat you to death if I catch you that high again😂". She never did, but I guess even if I didn't fall from the sky she would have made sure I was😂. I loved running the creeks and climbing everything as a child. I would love our children to have more opportunities of this, but for us living in town they only get that style visiting friends who live in the country. In town we walk daily and are blessed with a nice yard...it is just different. This year I planted some apple trees to add food and shade. I am hoping to make our outside more accommodating.
I am a mom of a woman who was a kid like you! Whew! Scared me to death! “Mom, look where I am! Way up here!” At the top of a tall tree. She became a rock climber and a helicopter firefighter. Guess what? She now has a little daredevil of her own! Lol!
@@cynthiafisher9907 I caught my third born when he was two by one arm and leg as he skydived...aka jumped full force from the top step of a tall staircase in our brand new home at the time! Later add 2 years he wrapped himself in the cords for the blinds to parachute...I caught him mid air saving his life yet again. He has climbed trees ..no jumping yet there! So thankful for God's protection of that precious boy!
We got rid of all blinds that day! Our preacher had preached on getting your spiritual parachute ready...and he was listening.

My daughter was in college it was sooo cold she froze water balloons and made decorations in the snow. Also have you seen those molds where you can make snowball shapes to hang on trees or molds to make snow penguins.
In my area we have a nature center that’s free. It’s beautiful and they have free snow shoeing and offer covered sleighs for little ones so parents can strap them to their waist. Indoor play area all nature related of course. Hiking trails.

I live in Tennessee. There's miserable cold and no snow to play in.
