- I got fired - and it was completely my fault. I didn't ask for help, I didn't ask for support, I didn't ask.
Health and Safety Professionals when they just get started in this field, they are left up to their own devices, they are left thrown to the wolves and are required to either hone their skills and swim, or get overcome by the anxiety and sink to the bottom.
I realized this lesson once it was too late and I was terminated from a job that would be have very great, had I have just asked for help and support so that I may fully understand what it was I was needed to do, and how to do it.
Let this video be a lesson. Let me hard learned lesson be some OE for you to take back with you in order to help you succeed.

I am an EHS Manager for a large company currently but I had a company (last job) take a massive chance on me. I have a mountain of leadership experience behind me starting at age 15 (JROTC, US Army - Training and operations, Drug enforcement, etc.) but i had 0 real safety experience. They made me a program coordinator, the 2 biggest programs being environment and safety, and it changed my life. I have no degree, no certs, nothing at all but I'm doing a job many people have a masters degree to do.
My 2 cents of advice for anyone in this field is 1. be resourceful and 2. Ask questions (in that order). I do my best to not be totally clueless when I ask for help. I'm working with dust explosions currently so I purchased a textbook and read the OTM. I'm still clueless, but I was able to present a good amount of information and explain to my boss why we need to hire a fire safety engineer to help us.
Being clueless with knowledge has helped protect me from "this guy has no idea what he's doing."

30+ year CSP here and you nailed it. If you are experienced, seek out folks to mentor and you will keep learning and avoid working off outdated information and methods. Thanks for your honesty and talking like the rest of us.
Absolutely! Sadly some people in this profession feel threatened by the newcomers and do not want to extend the helping hand to help improve this field, nor do they feel as if they can learn something from the newcomers and it is rather disheartening! Thank you so much for the comment Megan! Maybe you can share it to help spread the word and get rid of some of these bad apples!

Oh trust I completely understand! If you have anything you need help with or an something you want me to make a video on for you then let me know and I’ll hook you up! You will be fine though, just make sure to keep reminding yourself that you are NOT expected to know and remember everything, and don’t be afraid to talk to people and ask a ton of questions! Even if it’s going to the field, watching people work and asking questions about how or why they do certain things.

I have been both people, both asking too many questions (so they said) and, not asking enough questions and making assumptions. Never assume anything about safety, you have to make darn Sure what you are saying is understood and complied with. Excellent video and well said. Jim H.

This is absolutely amazing. I've been on the safety committee at my job for over 5 years and last year we got a new safety manager and he was YOUNG it is his first job. And he was just freaking out me and another guy we will call him kevin pulled him to the side and asked him what was wrong he said he felt in over his head with all the new people and didn't know if he could deal with all of us on the safety committee Kevin said well can you deal with David (that's me) he said oh yeah I think he is cool and Kevin said well if you can deal with David and how ridged he is you will love the rest of us. That actually helped him a lot I dare say in a year this young man has became one hell of a resource for us as we are to him
If you haven’t told him what a great resource he has become, I would recommend you do that. Words such as that from peers or even the craft are held in very high regard! It sounds like you got a good one working with you guys! Always enjoy getting your comments brother! Thanks!
@@SafetySpiel oh we do tell him how much we appreciate everything he does. I actually married him and his girlfriend in June. They couldn't find someone to do it on the day they wanted he told me they were upset about that and we're actually going to change the date I said well buddy I can do it. It was awesome to be apart of that with him
I am going now through similar issues as stated with being new on the profession and all, need further support on the type of programs need at first for someone residing and from overseas.

🫣 no question is a stupid question
Sometimes we think there can be such a thing as a stupid question, but in reality, you are absolutely correct! If WE have the question, chances are someone else has that same question and is too scared to ask it. It is with THOSE questions that could save someone from being seriously injured or killed because we never know the true impact of asking questions until we get into a situation where we wish we would have asked it!
