My first job in safety was an HSE Manager for a fortune 500 O&G manufacturing company. I had zero experience in manufacturing and zero of what is listed in the video. My background was being a Navy veteran and State Trooper. I didn't have a degree in safety but I did have an MBA. After 3 years as an HSE Manager I landed an executive position in safety. A few years later I obtained the CSP and a Masters in Occupational Safety and Health. One thing no degree or certification will give you which is very important in safety is leadership skills, Excellent articulation ability and being comfortable speaking to groups (public speaking) and speaking to senior leaders. Finally, the one thing more important than any of the above to gain entry into the field is your ability to network. Its not what you know, its who you know.

I hate when I say, "Driving. Call?" And the person replies with another text saying "Yeah." Never calls. I texted that either before I started driving or before the red light turned green. I will NOT text while I drive. Texting at a light is bad enough because most people type full sentences without looking up instead of looking up between words.

I have a 4 year degree in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Florida and have been working as an Environmental Specialist for almost 3 years. I do inspections at construction sites and industrial facilities and have met a ton of EHS managers. I currently have my CPR, and my 40 hr. HAZWOPER. My current plan is to get my OSHA 30 and apply for the ASP but not sure if my background will qualify me for the course. Is there a recommendation on cracking into the EHS field if I can't qualify for the ASP? And would you make any other certificate recommendations in my plan? Thank you so much for your consideration and all of the information you provide on your channel!

I decided on staying the military for another year because it felt like my only option because finding a job in the health and safety field was ridiculously tough. I’ve been in the military since high school, so it’s all I really know. I tried getting into health and safety jobs, made it to a bunch of interviews, but things always fell apart when they found out I didn’t have the specific experience they were looking for, like in oil and gas or construction. On top of my military background, I’ve got EPA Type I & II certifications, OSHA 10/30 hour training, and I’m even halfway through a bachelor’s in Safety Management. But none of that seemed to matter. It’s been a real headache, trying to figure out why I’m striking out, considering I’ve got a decent mix of skills and education.

Interesting, I am a Lead Safety Manager now. I started as a construction medic and then started shadowing Safety managers in a full construction site. I started getting my qualifications to become competent and CHST. The OSHA 30 is like having a first aid certificate and trying to run 911 in an ambulance, it’s my thought. I do have firefighter 1/2 certs and HazMat operator certs on top of being a medic. Understanding how to treat and staying on top of first aids versus recordables. There is no cookie cutter way really, just apply and get your big certs out the way. But I will be honest, being book smart versus having field experience is galaxies of a difference. Best of luck! If I can assist you in anything, let me know.
