And, besides facing us for Pele’s last match, those of us who are old enough to have witnessed it won’t forget it was against Yugoslavia another giant of Brazilian football, the great Zico, scored his last goal for the national team (and what a goal it was!). I attended this unforgettable match at 13 years of age. There were about 120 000 people at the maracana stadium. For some reason tostão did not play. I remember that at the time I was thrilled since one of my favourite players, the winger Zequinha would play. I remember that Rivelino scored a goal and like many others I realized that Brazil would have to figure out to survive without Pelé in the team from then on.

A great player has to know his limits. He had already played in 4 World Cups and time was not on his side. Back in 1970s and 60s, reaching 30 years old was the end of one's career; Gerd Muller retired from national team at age 29 because he didn't want the fans criticize him once his form begins to decline. Cruyff did the same at age 30 in 1977.
@SUDMAA - Brazil was 7 years under a strong military dictatorship, they say that Pelé preferred to step aside so as not to let the government use his image strongly as a propaganda boy for the regime!

If you watch pele you can see that technically he is spectacular an absolute monster but he falls way short on so many levels compared to maradona.Its actually not even close.Even rivelino has better dribbling and a better touch which pele admitted to because its obvious.Pele is soecial and unique and when he plays your eyes are glued to him.A different class
