Have you noticed the proximity effect at work in your mix? How do you typically address it with your singers?

I wish I could just show them this video and make them understand. We're about to have a discussion about mic technique at our next practice. The worship leader finally listened to my ranting, and gave me training time. Pray for me...😁

Have them move the mic to the side a little when they go for it

I'm a singer and I have a great question for you guys. From 3:43. If you notice guys like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin live, they are like a foot away from from the mic (even with an SM58).. lol.. How do you explain this? How does their voice still sound so loud? With an SM58 if I sing more than an inch or two away, there is barely any volume. The signal is pretty much gone as discussed around 3:43.

A Metalhead's Journey probably need a condenser mic with phantom power a lot louder than cardioid dynamic ones

As T mentioned, probably a condensor, but also Frank Sinatra actually keeps the mic the same distance from his mouth pretty consistantly.
