Why did audio manufacturers call the button phase when it’s really polarity?

technically the signal is 180 degrees out of phase, which is how electrical engineers like to think about things. they get to design it so they get to pick i guess

What's the difference between phase and polarity button on a console? Is it the same 180° flip or something else

Phase is specifically in relation to time, polarity is the first one they were talking about, where they flipped the signal 180 degrees. Phase was the second example they gave, where they delayed it a little. A lot of people get phase and polarity confused, they don't mean the same thing, but they are close.
