How to Run a Soundcheck
Explore the process of creating and executing an effective soundcheck for your band on Sunday morning. From initial setup and line checks to tips on a consistent console file and more, gain practical tips for improving your soundcheck process. Make tweaks as needed and ensure clear communication between musicians and the monitor engineer or whomever may fulfill that role in your church.

Line Check and Initial Setup
Before the band arrives, it's crucial to perform a line check to ensure all inputs are correctly patched and showing up on the console. Using a consistent console file week-to-week helps streamline the setup process.
Default Console File
Start with a preset console file if you have consistent players and setups.
Play a Song In Your Setlist
To ensure everyone is playing and singing at their performance volume, start the soundcheck by playing a chorus from a song that will be part of the set.
-Full Volume: CheckPlay and sing at full volume to mimic actual performance conditions.
-Adjustments: Make necessary tweaks after the initial run-through to refine the mix.
Communicating Adjustments
Efficient communication is key to making effective sound adjustments and to running a cohesive soundcheck.
-Specific Requests: Musicians should communicate clearly, e.g., asking for "overheads up" or "vocals down."
-Monitor Engineer's Role: The engineer should anticipate needs and make proactive adjustments.
Starting Point for New Members
For new musicians, provide a baseline starting mix to help them integrate quickly.
-Mix Setup: Include a nominal level of all instruments and a little more of their own voice or instrument.
-Efficiency: This approach saves time and helps new members get comfortable quickly.
Final Adjustments
After initial adjustments, revisit the song and make any final tweaks to ensure everyone is satisfied with their mix.
-Consistency: Ensure all levels are consistent for a balanced mix.
-Final Check: Play through the song again to confirm all adjustments are effective.

    Great educational content! What I would do differently as a musician and audio engineer: no annoying click track in the in ears. To me the fun in music is playing together. Vibin. And if the bpm is changing during a song (as it did with all good Songs before click) based on the part of the song, then this is how music should be. We moved from playing together and going with the flow to rather boring radio compatible perfectionism. Just my 2c and maybe some food for thought. No hater here: thanks for the great and free (!) educational content!!

      I think this video is more oriented towards monitor mixing, also its never as simple as you are saying, a lot of things influence sound, so you almost always have to do work on an already existing show file.

    At my church, we only have one desk and therefore we also only have 4 separate mixes. Because of that, there is a group for the non instrument plane vocalists, and they all have to share the same mix. So I would definitely say compromise or general consensus for that group is also good to note.,

    Excellent video- we were just talking the other day on a more efficient way to run soundchecks. Over the past year or so it's gotten to the point where singers and band were randomly calling out changes to their mix so the monitor engineer was having a difficult time keeping up with mix changes.

    As a musician of 40+ years I find it somewhat amusing and puzzling why anyone but the drummer would want the click track in their ears. The drummer is the one keeping time for the band. The rest of the band keeps with the drummer. No matter if the drummer is behind or in front or dead on with the click, the band follows the drummer’s time. That’s what makes a cohesive unit in my opinion and experience. If everyone follows the click, then you have 5/6/7/etc people that could be out with time.

    • @Niatuom
      @Niatuom Před dnem

      There are times in a song where the drums could be out. Maybe a song that starts only with the acoustics. Or an acapella bridge or sth

    • @TinoSchulz1990
      @TinoSchulz1990 Před dnem

      All of our musicians (prof. live touring band) want the click in their ears. We could happily play without it, but some sections just require click tracks. For example if there's a part without drums.

    • @abimaelmartell
      @abimaelmartell Před 23 hodinami

      I like having click on ears, it allows you to lower the drums on your mix, also keep time consistent on parts where the drums are not playing, or playing odd parts.

    I’m glad we’re finally having the discussion from the POV of potential overkill. Some of these integrators are just as bad for allowing some of these churches to get these consoles that are too much for their context. Part of stewardship is knowing better and making sure we educate people right, even if they have the money and they want this tool. Sitting them down and being real about their needs. As professionals who also work in ministry I think we have to constantly be checking our heart posture as it relates to desires vs. what’s actually needed to spread the gospel.

  • @JoeJohnson0515
    @JoeJohnson0515 Před 10 dny

    I love this video have a lot of good points! I’d also love to make a couple points here from the side of an integrator where my job is to help you make the most of your systems. As Joe and Jeff mentioned, there are so many pieces in your system between your source and your speakers, and an even bigger aspect than what your speakers are really comes down to design and deployment, then optimization. I’ve walked into many churches with coverage issues that we’re thinking they needed a whole new PA and we were able to help them out just with some physical tweaks, redeployment and retune of their existing rig, or the addition of some acoustic treatment which makes a monumental difference in a room, but is often one of the first things cut from the churches budget, but can have one of the biggest impacts. Along with that, I’ve walked into many churches that wanted a “line array”. It’s become a buzz word, but line arrays are a tool, and not an end all be all, point source is still an excellent solution in many spaces. I never walk into a space and verbally go “here’s what you need”. I talk to the church and find out about them, their use case, their needs, and I take measurements and go back and do an actual design and run through multiple options to find out what is the best fit to fulfill their specific room and needs. Sometimes it’s a line array, some times it’s point source, sometimes it’s constant curvature. But I’ve saved churches thousands and thousands of dollars who thought they needed an 8 box line array hang but point source took care of their smaller or shallower room in a much better manner! And a third point I often run into, is when the time comes, so it right the first time. Churches have a habit of buying a piece of equipment and thinking that it lasts forever. Whether it’s 10 year old X32 or I recently had a conversation with a church that was surprised their PA was dying… but it was installed in 1984! As mentioned of being good stewards, it’s not always the best stewardship to spend as little as humanly possible. Spend the time with an expert, design a system and matching acoustic treatment and invest in something that’s not just gonna fix your needs today, but is going to serve your churches needs for the next 10-20 years. It’s an investment. Every church is different, there’s no cookie cutter solutions. Do your diligence get designs, see installs the integrator has done, talk with people who have used that integrator before and learn of their experiences! As mentioned it’s an investment and it’s the churches the congregations money, being a good steward means doing your diligence the whole process including who you work with and invest with to help you. There are a ton of great integrators out there who will treat you right! Spend the time to find the best fit for you! Those are some of my thoughts, and I’m always open to conversations.but great podcast guys! Love this new format!

    A camera head-on to the display would be better to showcase the plug-ins and how each might be of value and clearer view of the settings used. Otherwise this is more of how faders blend to build a balanced mix. LV1 candidates may be M32 to LV1 (like your Grace church did) or X32 or other smaller-digital but older boards. I like what it offers but it has to be rock-solid reliable and volunteer friendly.

    Just listening back to this again - the service review bit. It got me thinking as I was listening to the pod in the van on the way to work this morning but then listening again via YT using my comms headset (AudioTechnica BPHS1). It sounded so much better and clearer through cans than it did in the van. Now, obviously party of that is the environment and the freq response of the equipment (van & van speakers vs the sealed environment of a decent-ish comms headset in a quieter office)... I wonder if the stream was mixed via headphones or with nearfields? I'd be interested to know. I know the Avantis was a dedicated broadcast console, but what about the monitoring environment? This is purely out of interest. The mix was killer as far as I was concerned - there's so much going on so they did a stonking job!
