    I feel like saying this about Vandham, since this is Roc’s last true moment in the light: There are multiple post-battle lines with Vandham we did not see. 2 of them I don’t think we saw were one with Gramps and one with Poppi. Both of these mention that he had a son, but he died, which is never specified how. The lines say that Poppi and Rex remind him of his son. This means that not only did Rex think of him as a father (like said in the Heart-to-Heart), but Vandham thought of Rex as a son... very sweet and touching if you ask me.

    • @ninjapotatolorf6237
      @ninjapotatolorf6237 Před 3 lety +8

      @@sawkchalk6966 it's okay in my opinion, but I feel like the game misses a lot of opportunities to flesh out the blades as their own characters, opting to have them as secondary to their drivers. Even in Roc's Heart-to-Heart, the main focus seemed to be about Vandham's legacy and Rex.
      For a similar system that (sort of) fixes this problem, there's a game called Oninaki. The "blades" in that game (called Daemons) are all ghosts of dead warriors from the past. Through upgrading their skill tree, you slowly unlock bits and pieces of their past, putting them together to discover who they were before dying. I think this goes a long way towards making the Daemons feel like real people, as opposed to walking gacha models that stand around and toss you their weapon.
      While I prefer Oninaki's system, even that isn't perfect. All of the backstory you can unlock is optional (much like Xenoblade's Heart-to-Heart system), and outside of helping to deal the finishing blow against bosses with over-the-top finisher cutscenes, Daemons have no direct impact on the game's narrative.

    • @cartooncritic7045
      @cartooncritic7045 Před 3 lety +22

      The thing is, I can't think of any other point in the story that a) necessitates awakening Mythra and b). allows for any point to kill Vandham off without wasting a bunch of Blades. Do remember that Vandham's whole chapter was about Rex coming to terms with what he's fighting for and strengthening the latter's resolve to save the people of Alrest from an incoming climate disaster.
      Also, and this is going into some mild spoiler territory, so I'll be vague here: Rex's response to Vandham's death is actually a set-up/foreshadowing for another major decision he'll have to make at the end of the game, and at that point he'll need to take the opposite approach for his sake and those around him. It's one of the most important steps in his character arc.
      In short, I think it would have been neat if Vandham lasted longer, but he had to die when he did in order for the story to work. At least we'll always have fanfiction.

      @ninjapotatolorf6237 Před 3 lety +1

      @@lylatfox4 Don’t get me wrong, I really like these characters, but I can't get truly attached to any of them if I don't understand what their whole deal is (who they are as a person and why they're here fighting for the party, outside of just "well I'm the protagonist's Blade so I have to").
      Wulfric is one of my absolute favorite Blades, and it's not just because he looks really cool and is good in speed runs. It's because he has a distinct personality (wild and easily angered, but fiercely protective like a mother bear) and has a personal goal for fighting that is, honestly, very easy to sympathize with (to protect humans and be seen as more than just a "scary monster"). That's honestly the bare minimum of what I ask for in the optional blades.
      Some of my other favs include Theory, Perceval, and Finch.
      Finch being one of my favorites is mostly due to bias (she's adorable, and she was my first rare blade in my first playthrough). She's very simple as a character. Her trope is that she's a "forgetful birdbrain" which, while it gives an idea of who she is, it means next to nothing when it comes to her actual personality. The game treats it more like a running joke than anything else, and because of that, she's not really allowed to grow as a character. We know she's forgetful, but she never becomes aware of it. As a result, her personality is full of misplaced self-confidence and child-like wonder. That's all fine and good, but imagine for a moment that Finch WAS aware of her forgetfulness. How would she react? How would it affect her on a personal level? Would she get frustrated at herself for forgetting something she was just told? Would she apologize occasionally when she knows she forgot something? Or would she just let it brush off her and continue being her child-like self, even though she knows it gets in the way of doing everyday things?
      What if she got more self-conscious when people compared her to Tirkin? What if she vowed to never forget again, but realized it's impossible? How would that affect Finch? Would she despise Tirkin? Would she love Tirkin and stand up for them, realizing that she actually does have more in common with them than she thought?
      A detail like this could have been explored further, and could have given so much hidden depth to a character who is largely treated as adorable comic relief.

      As an Brit (English) it's weird to hear the phrase "British mythology". But then we do have a bad habit of treating "British" as meaning the same thing as "English", which Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish folk reasonably don't approve of. So if you were referring to Scottish mythology, it would still be accurate to call it British mythology, I guess. It's just possibly not as specific - if you're the type of person that hears "British" and straight away thinks "English".

    So to do Emile's intro in his place since he can't, he completed Ursula's Affinity Quest "Bearing Her Soul". During that affinity quest, he maxed out his merc levels and can now upgrade Garfont Mercenaries to Rank 4 as such he is now back at Garfont.
    Personal thought of Admin candidates:
    Alicia: decent choice she seems to be able to handle her own.
    Popoh: cheerful but we talking admin for a merc group although it's a nice feeling to come back to someone like her.
    Zengrid: yeah already automatic no because he is in it for the money. 10:14 Maybe work on improving on speech but he is a business man if anything.
    Yep, Alicia certainly is best choice for admin.
    For that Roc Heart-to-Heart
    Seriously, it's like I said, Vandham though he did not write it in his will but he would have certainly entrusted Rex with Roc and it certainly annoys me even now he ends up not being in the main story any further. He is essentially Rex's second main Blade. Let's just say there is a thing later in the story where a Blade of someone is entrusted to another but that Blade is also left out of the main story.
    22:24 Guessing Roc is one of those gender neutral characters as in those who have no defined gender.

Hopoh is the one that's an automatic no for me since she clearly has no clue what's expected of her.

    • @hallaloth3112
      @hallaloth3112 Před 3 lety +3

      So, it varies from place to place on how Merc groups are portrayed. But generally speaking Mercs are in it for the money. That doesn't mean they are heartless/souless killing machines, just that they have a contract that they follow, to the letter and they'll do everything in thier power to fulfill that contact.
      Path of Radiance (Fire Emblem) shows some of that dicotomy and the hate that Mercs get. ..though it seems Alrest has a bit of a higher respect for Merc groups in general.
      Anyway, a merc company does need someone to handle the finances and having someone from a respectable background who knows how to handle the upper class and money for that matter isn't a poor move. That's my reasoning for why Zendrig being an actual decent choice. Of them all Popoh I think is the weakest option.

    Wanna know what the sad part about Emile’s experience with Bearing Her Soul yesterday? His pain and suffering could’ve been ended much much sooner if he had first focused on Soul first. Meet and Greet is unlocked by getting to Level 9 Soul. All Level 9 Vocals got Emile was Holy Choir which he couldn’t do because he limited himself by not going to Indol just yet and Rehearsal which also requires Level 9 Looks and Soul and is there in case you haven’t been diligent about those other one-time Merc Missions. When he had only Soul to work on, he had a little under 4,700 fans. Just replace Soul in that context with Vocals or Looks and he wouldn’t have needed 99 of each stamp. Sure he might have missed out on the Holy Choir (which I’ll be curious to see if it’s still available when he gets to Indol), Rehearsal, and likely either the Vocal or Looks Lesson 5 Merc Missions, but I get the impression he’s not concerned with getting and showing off every Merc Mission in the game, much as that irks my inner completionist.
    Huh. For some reason I thought you needed Merc Group Level 5 to see this Roc Heart to Heart, but no, it looks like all you need to do to view this is awaken him and stay at the inn in Garfont with Roc in your party. Might also need to have his fourth Key Affinity node unlocked and be ready to learn Swoop Level 4.
    Also prepare for the easiest quest in any Xenoblade game.
    0:50 The RNG does seem to favor your Rare Blades, especially as you get more of them, but Commons will show up every now and then.
    1:22 Emile’s probably feeling smug about being able to make so many “Yew” puns, intentional or not, without any repercussions now that he never has to fight Yew in this playthrough ever again.
    2:20 They also know how brutal the last Merc Group quest is too.
    3:07 One might even say she’s a Sparky Girl.
    You have to ask at least one question. You can’t just look at an applicant and immediately say “you’re hired!” or “nah, don’t like you”, even though the latter is what the hiring process often feels like from the applicant’s perspective.
    4:20 That’s not too far off one of the applicant’s motivations. In fact I dare say it’s spot on, though not for the immediate reason one thinks.
    I think Alicia is right about the Garfont Mercs, at least in terms of what others have had to say. There are a number of NPCs who talk about the mercs, and about the most negative thing is that when you’re starting off as the new boss, some of the NPCs aren’t sure how the mercs will survive without Vandham.
    5:33 It only took me four watches of this (three myself and then the LP) to notice that Alicia specifically says “the right person for the job” and that she may not be specifically referring to herself. I don’t think a lot of candidates are that considerate of others who are applying for the same position. Usually it’s pretty competitive. All the more reason why I like Alicia of the three in terms of her personality and attitude.
    Surprise, Popoh’s neither of those things! At least as far as what you get out of her interview. I’ve never hired Popoh on any playthrough. Never even considered her given that she really doesn’t seem as interested in the task and would rather just be treated like a team mascot/pet all day which while great for morale isn’t why the position was made.
    6:52 Could use some more Lockpickers though, but yeah, you’re sitting really nice and pretty for Fortitude (thanks to Crossette), Keen Eye, Superstrength, and Focus which are the big four general field skills I feel outside of the element masteries. Definitely aren’t lacking for Leaping either.
    8:02 Guy reeks of pretense, but he’s actually more capable than he seems.
    I like to think that Adenine’s off on the side with a pair of glasses on and taking detailed notes on each candidates with the other Blades involved looking over her shoulders and muttering things.
    10:28 Don’t worry, there’s no wrong choice here, and apart from seeing and talking to your new hire around the village depending on the time of day, this has no impact on any other quests involving the Mercs or the story. Pick whoever you feel is best for the job based.
    Is that what you took away from Popoh, Yew? I got the impression that she has a fetish for getting pets...
    11:17 But how about at night? Where can we find Popoh?
    Zengrid’s always been a very close second in my book just due to how competent he seems compared to the other two potentials. A positive attitude can get you through, and who doesn’t want to come back to a nice furry pet that’s happy to see you after a long grueling day of work, but Zengrid’s the only one with skills and actual ambitions. The only things that keep me from hiring him is his abrasive personality that he can’t seem to reel in and that he plans to leave the Mercs when we don’t know how long we need someone in this position for, though the latter wouldn’t be so bad as if he and his family are brought back into power, they’d make for really good patrons and he might even recommend others to not only fill in the position he once had but also just hire out the mercs in general.
    Oh man, she’s related to *the* Feista “Keys to the Garage” Keeth? I love his martial arts prowess!
    13:33 That’s probably not idle praise. Really wish Vandham were still alive to see how everyone’s doing with Rex as the leader.
    14:40 All my playthroughs I don’t think I’ve ever seen let alone talked to Kora here before. That’s too funny. I’m really reminded of some post-battle banter between her and Nia. “I’m begging ya, please stop talking and let me get some sleep!”
    15:50 Very interesting. That also means she’s the objectively best pick of the three because she provides you with double the dev points that the other two would provide.
    I would’ve thought that being under the Saffronia would be the better view, it being able to see the Saffronia with the light coming down and against that background, this view of the village can’t be beat.
    19:55 And that is the only time Rex calls Vandham a father figure. I’m glad that their father-son relationship went both ways and that it wasn’t lost on Rex how much Vandham saw him as a second son.
    21:15 Eh, not exactly. The last Merc Group mission has Roc doing something too. Ah, the perils of being a Unique non-main character Blade in this game. They get far worse treatment than the Rare Blades, Roc having it the worst because the other one has his time in the Torna: The Golden Country story.
    22:46 I don’t think that’s accurate. Poppibuster’s AI certainly has a will of its own and its own personality. However, while the speaking voice is male, the unit itself is genderless with its occupant/pilot being the one without any will.
    23:25 His spotlight was Chapter 3 and that’s mostly it, and even then he had to share the stage with Vandham whose presence made him take more center stage than Roc.
    24:04 That’s pretty great.

    “Roc” is used in one more cutscene in a later chapter not going to spoil which but it’s a nice to see a part of 4 a final canonical time.

    A common misconception is that Roc is the only blade with a gender of 4, but common animal blades (and Poppibuster, but they're DLC so that's fair) do as well.
    Gender 3 is labeled as animal, but goes unused. It may have been that earlier in development, gender 3 was used by common animal blades and used to register as an animal for merc missions, but later (possibly so Dromarch could be both male and animal) the animal/humanoid distinction was made separate from gender.

    Knowing a bit of how programming works. There is something called an "Enumerator" or enum for short that allows you to create a variable where its states are of a finite list. For example, suits of a deck can be clubs, diamonds, heart and spades so making an enum allows you to define what suit something is.
    The way it works is every enum gets assigned a number and on the low level nothing really about the enum gets stored, only the number. So clubs would be 0, diamonds would be 1, hearts will be 2, and spades will be 3. And the computer infers it is an enum from context. But there is nothing really preventing you from using any number, even one not assigned to an enum. Another good example is pokemon type. There are 18 types but you can get glitch types that are numbers that aren't assigned to a type.
    So I assume when deciding the Blade's gender they made an enum of the 3 genders (insert "ah yes the 3 genders" joke here). Something like male=0, female=1, animal=2. And when picking Roc's gender they just gave him 4 instead of an enum. (I would've used -1 personally, I assume they made it 4 and not 3 in case they ever added another gender like "Giant" or "Robot").
    Speaking of the "ah yes, the 3 genders" joke. In a lot of languages (human languages, not programming languages) there is "grammatical gender", most famous is German with "Male", "Female" and "Neutral". But there are some languages where the 3 grammatical genders are "Male", "Female" and "Animal". So that fits.
