    Awesome rig . A lot of hard work and money. Something different but same. Got a 1997 vx Amazon 1HDFT , triple locked from Scotland. Fully setbup for touring. Think its the only one in WA . Just love seeing everyone's pride and joy. Cheers

    This vid is getting saved for future reference for sure! More detail on the -fte swap would be great: best donor vehicles, hurdles, compatible gbox's, can they bolt into an fz... but thats a different vid i guess

    you guys would’ve loved the 80 my dad sold recently - 1993 40th Anniversary Edition model with only 123,000 k’s on it, absolutely M I N T !!!
    Wished I could’ve got my hands on it but no room in the yard. ☹️

    Great rig! I have an 80 series myself. Also with the PDI intercooler and oil cooler. And indeed the grill doesn't fit anymore. :) I modified the original grill and mounted a stainless steel mesh inside. I removed all the plastic fins but kept the toyota horizontal logo. I can give you some pics of how I did it, looks good in my opinion :).

    I love my FJ-80 and FJ-100 which was inherited. Don’t get me wrong both are excellent vehicles but I prefer FJ-80 off roading due size and it seems more sturdy.

    What sort of dollars do the FTE's cost to rebuild?
    Has this 80 had a re spray, paint looks immaculate.
    What sort of fuel economy do you get towing. This thing is just a beast. Toyota done a good job on the 80's such a capable vehicle. Could put some l.e.d strips under the bonnet. Mint rig 👌

      About 10k for a rebuild depending on what you do. This had afew upgrades while it was apart like bearing and arp studs.
      Still the original paint, just loves a good polish. Cheers man 🤘

    Did you opt for a larger trans cooler from PDI? Got a 97 HDJ80 with the PDI front mount kit and trans cooler and the trans cooler does sit close but the grille still fits up perfect like standard?

      We got the biggest one PDI could supply. I think it's off their latest 100 series kit so sits out alot further

    Interesting how much better equipped this thing is compared to the 1979 series buckets yet people still froth over them. You’ve gotta spend more on a 70 to make it half decent than this whole rig would’ve cost.

      just autos have sinced tuned it and brought it back to 301 hp I believe with a bit more low down power

      The FTE will destroy the trans if the cooler is behind the intercooler .. most FTE owners with any 'Power Up' mods are on there 2nd or 3rd Auto ... Seems wrong but the only answer is about $15k on a 4l80e and compushift .. even with a big cooler and heavy duty Valve body 'Wholesale Autos' told me not to mod the FTE past 700nm or pay the price! They don''t even want me to try their 'Extreme A750f' trans on my FTE .. it's a Bummer!

    I don't understand, he pulled the engine down, race bearings and horned the bores, etc
    Then the timing belt goes on the first trip?
    Did he not replace the TB and Water Pump while he was rebuilding it?

      So far so good. The lock up and the valve body upgrade makes a big difference

      @@TrackaboutOffRoadCampersAus yeah nice did it get tuned with a flat tourqe curve to help the trans? I've got a A442f behind my fte have been thinking about upping the power to the 300hp Mark just concerned about the trans but it has had a full HD rebuild for extra power .

    seeing a hot trans cooler in front of a intercooler is a big no no for obvious reasons, stick it behind the intercooler, other than that fkn awesome 80

      You can't really .. if you want to keep your auto alive .. everyone who buries that trans cooler and runs more than 600nm and wheels hard, is up for a new transmission .. it's the biggest problem for us Auto FTE owners .. can't Gturbo mine because the A750 will blow .. even with HD valve body, lockup, extra cap oil pan etc etc Lanes is the most powerful FTE auto I've come across without a Chev Auto, that isn't on it's 3rd trans .. I'm waiting till some Autobox genius works out the way to put the 200 box behind the FTE .. NB, noticed the 'Dirty 30' just had it's auto rebuilt .. trucked to Melbourne for a 'Tune' and It's pushing just over 600nm .. the FTE is just a low rpm torque beast that if fully unleashed .. tears most automatics to pieces 😥

      Depends if you include labour or if you do stuff yourself but it'd be +50k with all the fruit and rebuild
