What I love about my research is a chance to uncover the basic processes that keep balances in the cells, which affects everything from how our body functions normally to how diseases develop.
My name is Shengyi Iris Sun, PhD and the Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. Our research focuses on protein quality control process in the endoplasmic reticulum, which is an important hub for protein production in the cells.
We specifically look at how misfolded or unfolded proteins are recognized and degraded from the endoplasmic reticulum. Our goal is to understand this process in the context of liver physiology, neutron metabolism, and germline stem cell biology.
Our research have significant and direct impact on human health by understanding the basic mechanism of protein quality control, waken insights into the diverse human diseases associated with misfolded proteins such as liver diseases, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic diseases. In addition, our research enables us to identify potential therapeutic targets for future intervention.
