Ayubowan, dear Sri Lankans. Sri Lanka's citizens are smart and hard working. If one were to
measure how much they have been able to accomplish , since their independence, you would agree, they are very smart and hlghly motivated nation (people).

How can a follower of Buddha even believe that he has never been born in another place of this universe? What about those ancient Singhalese reborn into other nations and people... they do not deserve respect? Who is foreigner or native under this perspective of eternity and unity of everything? .. Maybe it is time to cool down and leave nicer comments for this good documentary about the good island.

This is the Sri Lanka many Colombo folk are proud of. We were so oppressed we started praising the oppressor. Literacy in these days were dangerously low. They broke the back of Temple education and provided alternatives only for the rich.

I respect your right to have a different opinion. I personally do not subscribe to the idea that SWRD Bandaranayaka was a stupid man.You are correct. We must go for a Sri Lankan identity once LTTE terrorism is eradicated.Personally I had to learn both Sinhala and Tamil to be in government service.I know even today sinhala doctors are required to pass Tamil and Tamil doctors are required to pass Sinhala for promotions in the Health Service. This is not racism.Majority of Lankans are not racist.

@no1reallycaresabout - There is nothing wrong in making Sinhala and Tamil official language. It allowed native people to come out from the dark. If not his policy our country would be similar to most countries/ islands in pacific ocean where elite English speaking few and lot in the dark.
Cinsider seriously opportunity cost of not making native languages..., rather just blaming others..,

What happened in Sri Lanka was that we never industrialized our society. Japan did, Korea did, all the western countries did. Sweden was even dirt poor than this. Industrialization is required for any country to thrive, but unfortunately still we struggle to embrace the Industrialization fully.

yes there are Tamils living, and have been living among Sinhalese very happily for years. Even when LTTE in the USA Canada and Europe were spreading blatant lies about Sinhalese and how the government is committing 'genocide' of Tamils, Tamils were living happily in every part of the island working and going about their lives. It is a shame that such lowly liars and brutal and fraudulent LTTE tamils took so many lives brutally -all for money and power! shame!

English were primitive compared to ancient Sinhalese.

You must be aware of the fact that during British colonial era, the divide and rule discriminated against majority Sinhala people in Sri Lanka. When Sri Lanka gained independence only 6% of the population could read, write and speak English. There was nothing wrong in bringing Sinhala only act.The Act was meant to correct the historical mistakes of the centuries of Colonial rule. Unfortunately Mr. Bandaranayaka was murdered before he could fully implement his agenda.

Indeed, primitive seems to have been the word of the day. I can only imagine what the reaction would have been from the prim, proper, "civilized" British who watched this film:"it's such a charming, quaint little country with such primitive but sweet and subservient natives". The superiority complex of the British is nothing but PALPABLE and DISGUSTING.
