    Here's a great quote from Stoic philosopher Seneca the young: "We suffer more often in imagination than in reality". I have started to ignore my doubts and take action. After 4 years of delay, I have finally started my own CZcams channel, which is already growing. Take consistent action. Never quit.

    Took a death and dying course in college many years ago. The theme throughout the course was - You cannot truly live life until you come to terms with your own inevitable death. It was eye opening to plan your own funeral. Perspectives and priorities change. Life is too short to be pissed off and outraged all the time.

      @TheGoldenWildcat Před 2 lety +1

      Oh yes, you can truly live life until you come to terms with your own ability to accent to your own godhood that's beyond the influences of death itself & claim the latent immortality we all have & awaken it. However, if you perceive your reality as what you are perceiving now, then “unreality of your own inevitable so-death” believes that's perceiving now will come true & become the part of your reality‥ & what that happens, that'll be exactly the only thing you will get. I strongly believe, in my opinion, that life is only as long or short as we make or desire it to be.

  • @seandeg

    "The single most important practice in Stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can’t. What we have influence over and what we do not.". I still get angry over things out of my control-- for example, a flat tire driving to work BUT my anger is much less than it use to be and I always make sure I reflect back on these moments in a positive way. I think the important thing is, is that these things don't happen over night. It is hard but you quickly realize how far you have come.

    • @TheKevgray1
      @TheKevgray1 Před 4 lety +5

      What you are referring to , by accepting there are things out of our control and it's when these things hit us it's how we think about them ,has really changed how I am . I'm more relaxed and able to accept my fate .

  • @osse1n
    @osse1n Před 4 lety +117

    Anger doesn't go from 0 to 100, it's a gradual process and one has to take care of it proactively.
    Don't feed it when triggered, step back, reassess and act rationally.

      @JohnM... Před 4 lety +6

      Wrong. Anger is an instantaneous reaction - very, VERY often unable to be reflected upon or at least controlled. It is more of a reflex action. This is where a Stoic point of view is utterly naive.

      I agree with el dragon and alan jensen. I am that guy that can go nuclear in a nanosecond, stepping back is not an option, but I've been working on controlling it the latter part of my life, I'm 56 now. I used to fight a lot and just destroy whatever was in my path when I went off, and then regret it once I calmed down. Now i still get enraged, most always at myself for not performing well at whatever I am competing in, but nothing gets broke and haven't fought in 20 years. I just stumbled onto this site and stoicism and am thinking i can apply it to my life, we will see, for I bowl tonight and surely I will be tested ! lol

    Dear Ryan, you have help me so much to understand about Stoicism.
    I am Nurse.I’ve been dealing with bullies at work on a daily basis.I was at one point quit because I was immersed of my own miseries .I realized those people don’t care and I was having a pity party of one.Then I read your book.It changed my perspective.I came back to the same place I work because I love my job and I love my patients.I still deal with those bullies .But I learned to stand my ground and not let them get into me anymore.
    But how much patience I have for these kind people who wants nothing but to destroy my peace? My answer is...I don’t know.All I know is that I look at things differently now.Whenever they attack me....it is an opportunity for me to remain calm and be objective and walk away from an ugly situation.
    At the end of the day,it is not what others have done to me that matters,it is what I have done to others.
    This week,one of the Nurse,threw a sharpie on me for selfish reasons ....and I wanted to throw back that sharpie to her but I chose not to.Because I don’t want to be like her.But I acknowledge her wrong doings and walked away from that situation.
    My inner peace is more important than thinking about human beings who wants nothing but to do evil works.
    I hope you’ll continue to share wisdom to others.
    T.

One is a 10 on the narcissistic scale and the other is a full blown psychopath who constantly drifts from town to town looking for their next victim. Have tried numerous times over the years to find common ground but both are extremely abusive. Given this, contact tends to result in negative energy being directed my way. Yes, I'm angry...but at the root is deep fear and sadness. No matter how much I've relied on and studied stoicism (and Buddhism) over the years all the perspectives mentioned in this video are still a challenge. How do we get things to change for the better if we accept everything “as is” without righteous anger?

  • @charleshurstreinvention3959

    This is correct. Becoming angry when needed is normal. But as I tell my own subscribers--staying in that state is not. Suffering from chronic anger causes a few problems. First it impedes your progress. By draining your energy that you should be using to advance yourself. Ever been angry all day at work then skipped that night workout? That's probably why. But it also isn't physically healthy and can lead to long term effects on the heart and doctors now think future cancer as well. Not to mention high blood pressure. There are two simple methods I tell my own people how to control anger. One you have with you--your breathing. You can breathe in a meditative state while walking down the street. You picture a coil slowly unwinding as if you were breathing through your stomach. Slow and in and out. Wind the coil and let it go slowly. It calms you down and if you do it every few hours for maybe ten reps then it keeps you calm. Second--reflect on what you are growing angry about. Is it really going to affect you even four months from now? You'll find many times it won't. So I would use these techniques to minimize anger so you can only progress forward. Hope that helps someone out there---Charles

    So here is a question I would like to ask. In the view of Stoicism, how should one handle someone who lies, denying that they did something, and the blame then falls on you (you being the only alternative), especially in a scenario where you have no feasible manner of proving that you did not do that thing. I understand that anger is not beneficial, but should the stoic's treatment of that person and attitude towards change?

    It's important to clarify that anger has to be released in some way, it can't just be "ignored".
    You can't think your way out of anger, it doesn't go away and it always finds a way out.
    But practicing stoicism will help with finding inner peace and building a fortress within so that the anger is controlled rather than surpressed, ignored or displayed through lashing out.

    The problem is when we are in real life getting in an angry situation ,we don't have the time or patience to do what you are saying now .But it is really nice to listen them before you get angry 😀😜

    If there is one out of one hundred, what keeps it from turning into ten out of a hundred and is seventy out of a hundred possible? Looking at anger differently and taking control on how one responds to it. Your a light in the dark. Thank you teacher. Wishing nothing but good for you.

    Like I seriously want to know who disliked this video but I understand because it's statistics and nature, but it's just such a weird phenomenon. Then again I guess if a viewer didn't like how the video was recorded but the content is amazing.
