Indeed, both cities have had their struggles in recent decades, and thus have developed a reputation for being not desirable cities to live in. When we often see Cleveland and Detroit in videos, we see huge abandoned buildings and dying neighborhoods. Now, fortunately, in the last few years both cities have made significant improvements. Both actually rock. (Clip of the Drew Carey Show theme of “Cleveland Rocks” by the Presidents of the United States of America) (Clip of live performance of “Detroit Rock City” by Kiss) And yes, look at all these things they have in common!
Both are in the Great Lakes region of the country. While both are near Lake Erie, Cleveland is right up on it. Detroit is actually right up on the Detroit River, but is also next to Lake St Clair, which is not great. Er, I mean, it’s not technically a Great Lake, but it IS part of the Great Lakes system. The Detroit River is actually a strait, and divides the metropolitan area of Detroit from Windsor, Ontario. Indeederoo, Detroit borders Canada.
Downtown Detroit is about 110 miles from downtown Cleveland. Driving by car around Lake Erie, the two cities are about 2 and a half hours apart. Of course, you could take a 30-minute flight between the two. Or even take a boat. That’d take around two hours. Or you could swim. Eh, I don’t recommend swimming between the two.
Both have shrinking populations. As far as the actual cities, the population peaked for both of them in the 1950s. Back then, Detroit had almost 1.9 million people, and Cleveland had almost a million. Detroit was the fifth biggest city in the country, and Cleveland 7th. Since then, however, both have steadily been losing people.

There is a silver lining. 60 minutes from Cleveland and 90 minutes from Detroit is Cedar Point, and that place is awesome.

Anyone looking for a great summer weekend in this part of the country, you literally have 4 options within 45 minutes apart... Take Route 2, not the turnpike...

@@mikewebbjr.9914 Route 2 is better during the day but that area is extremely susceptible to wild animals (mostly) at night, so I always take the Turnpike on the way home.
The Cleveland Browns won 1 game over the course of 2 years and the city threw them a parade. You can't put down a city with that high of loyalty.
They had a preseason champs parade! Ironically both teams (Browns and Lions) had zero win seasons. Of course, as luck would have it. In both years, the teams were undefeated in the preseason.
Cleveland's orchestra is very, very good; it's one of the Big Five in the US and no slouch on the world stage. The arts in general are solid here too.
Where are the other Big Five?
Detroit Symphony is also phenomenal. Comparing these two cities and not mentioning their orchestras at all is a huge oversight.

New York City is loosing population still a great city the population decline in Detroit and Cleveland actually stabilized and is not as bad as it used to be. Many tech companies are leaving the west coast and the east coast and moving to Cleveland same thing for Detroit. Ford is actually building a electric car assembly plant in Detroit and ford is adding 20K jobs to Detroit that’s a huge boost and will really help out Detroit. And this pandemic is making people choose places like Detroit and Cleveland for the low cost of living and people are leaving cities like Los Angeles Portland and New York City. Do your research kid you know nothing about the country I bet you don’t even know what caused the decline of these once great cities in the first place. If you take a look at downtown Detroit from 2010 vs 2020 and it’s a HUGE improvement same thing with Cleveland. Really Portland Los Angeles and New York City are in huge trouble.
@@egghat2478 And the thing is I actually was born in Detroit lived in Detroit through my childhood. Moved to Cleveland in my teen years and then I moved back to Michigan and settled in Grand Rapids. I know more than you. You probably haven’t even stepped foot out of whatever state you live in.

Also never mentioned is the current skyscraper Detroit is building which will be the tallest out of all the buildings in Detroit and in Michigan.
Last but not least Detroit was the Silicon Valley of America back in its heyday and it appears to be heading back to gain that title again thanks to Fords new building for AI and autonomous cars being built in downtown. To add Detroit was also known for building airplanes, X-ray machines, and famous music performers, the first record company etc. The city was so ahead of the times they had the first home phones in USA, phone books (as a city) and first paved highway, police cars, traffic signal lights etc. also invented light bulb.
Currently Detroit has increased in a diverse population by 1,000 in a year and many new projects all over the city. Yahoo, google etc have moved in too and more coming.

I've never experienced anything like seeing Cleveland Orchestra in Severance Hall. Don't get me wrong, I love Motown but my daughter is a violinist so I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to take her there. I live on Catawba Island but work in Toledo.

Im from Oregon but I've been to Cleveland twice in the last decade and actually really liked it. The architecture of the older downtown buildings has a "Gothic" feel to it.
Overall I like a lot of the dominant Architecture along the Great Lakes States. Plenty of modern stuff but a lot of it is old fashioned and maintained rather than remodeled. My home Town in Huntington has looked like it’s been stuck in the 90’s for decades.
Detroit has some gothic style churches, and also has some pretty cool art deco style buildings. Look up Albert Kahn for some more specifics.

I’m from Cleveland. Live downtown, and work in the city, ive lived on the west coast and have lived in the south as well, and keep coming home. It’s not the prettiest and it’s not fancy but for the most part Cleveland people are inherently good, and just hard working people. I love it here!! It’s not terrible at all ❤️
I would argue University Circle and Playhouse Square are pretty fancy.
Oh and the main campus of Cleveland Clinic.

i was born there, not raised. Was raised on a horse farm in Sacramento. i lived all over California. Was even stained there.
i have lived in Cleveland twice. Last was 2001-2003 to assist my ailing, now late, grandfather. Overall, Cleveland is just okay in my opinion.
That snow ❄️, man. i eventually dealt with it. In fact, after work, i would jog four miles home in it. But, i would rather do without that snow. Loved its culture and museums. Women are much better also. ESPECIALLY than a lot women in Las Vegas.
I was Born in deconis hospital in 1982,, There is a whole city named Cleveland, not just downtown. Venture farther than the "flats" and "ohio city" you may just change your opinion, I was just up there for family business and the divide between race and class has never been higher, your safe in your bubble I suppose, might do well to stick there.
Cleveland's population has gone down but the downtown population has increased dramatically over the past decades. Alot of new development in the downtown and its actually nice to walk around. I dont know about other parts of the city though
CLE has Improvided many areas, but East CLE remains the same (bad). The suburbs are growing faster than the city today since you know how us the lifestyle of city vs a nice house in the burbs.
When I came to Cleveland everyone have a least 4 kids.. there was children everywhere now the millennials are childless.. I'm sure no to many people left.. when they do they always comeback.. I don't know a single person who have left and don't come back I left 3 times and stay for good now for 26 years. Cleveland is easy ! Unfortunately Dogs are the new generation population

I've lived in the Cleveland area my whole life, so I'm a little biased. However, I think in order to experience Cleveland, and probably Detroit, is to have a local take you around. Everyone loves to shit on Cleveland, even the mayor who called us the butthole of the world, but I've learned over the years that the locals secretly hate on Cleveland so no one moves here and destroys this hidden gem of a city. I mean Cleveland has a phenomenal theatre scene, the local food and brewery scenes are thriving, there's a National Park just out of town and the Cleveland Metroparks make up the Emerald Necklace. I moved out of the area for several years during and after college, but having travelled coast to coast, there's something about Cleveland that just drew me back. I think it's the city experience but with friendly small town atmosphere. Anyone reading this who has ever been a Cleveland sceptic, I assure you that we're worth a visit!

I’ve lived in both cities. Now I’m in Cleveland. I will say Detroit was way more fun for me as far as night life and shopping/dining but I can’t speak for everyone. Cleveland has better site seeing for me out in the suburbs (where most people really live) beautiful parks and arts. If I would have to choose it would be Cleveland only because the cost of living and great suburbs to choose from that are very affordable and well kept. Not saying Detroit doesn’t have that but suburbs around Detroit can be pretty expensive (but well worth it). You can’t judge the two from this video. Travel to both, they both have a lot to offer.

I am from Cleveland and very proud, a few things that you missed, one of the best hospitals in the world, a top orchestra and art museum. We also have one of the wealthiest communities in the country and it has been a very long time since we were a mistake on the lake. Also don’t forget the show Hot in Cleveland!

Lived in Cleveland (and the suburbs) my whole life, am old enough to have witnessed the city's decline and struggle to rise again. There is no denying the huge social and economic challenges we face, but we don't have earthquakes (an occasional tremblor originating under the lake), we don't get hurricanes or forest fires......some winter snow, but not usually terrible. Our sports teams have not been overwhelmingly good, but the fans are amazingly loyal and vocal. If you get sick, Cleveland is a good place to be with the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals right here. We have amazing theater district.....don't need to go to New York, a world famous orchestra and art museum......plus the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We might be short on glamour, but folks here are friendly and generous. I've been other places, but for me, there's no place like home !

I lived in Cleveland in the early 2000s, my daughter was born in Cleveland in 2004. I like Cleveland but it has a long way to go. I haven't visited Detroit yet. The job market is improving in both cities especially with Amazon having multiple locations in both cities.
Born in 99, my neighborhood wasn't the greatest (East side) but I still wish the best for the city. It deserved a lot for what it's provided in the past
Oh we're so lucky to have the corporate overlords providing jobs for these shit cities. What would be cool is if the citizens themselves could fix it. Not some outside Corp looking to capitalize off all the poor people in these cities.
@@brandofield1280Amazon is providing good paying jobs for those citizens. They pay $15/hour which is good money in those cities. That is good for the economy as a whole because it generates jobs and revenue.

I was visiting Cleveland as a tourist (I'm from Puerto Rico) and I don't know if i'm crazy or not but I'm in love with Cleveland goddd Idk why but it has everything, its like having a great city, with everything in it and then a beautiful metropark with lot of nature. Idk, I just loved that and I never feel scared... just 1 time in downtown, thats all hahahah. Great city.

Hola!! Cleveland has a really cool puerto rican population! Love me a jibarito from El Rincon Criollo in Gordon Square, shopping at Dave's Mercado, and you can skip over 30 min west and you're in Lorain which has even more Puerto Rican folks.

A couple of things you missed about Detroit: Belle Isle, a wonderful Michigan State Park in the middle of the Detroit River, Detroit's version of Central Park NYC. The Detroit Institute of Arts is a world-class art museum. Wayne State University brings all the benefits of being a college town. And Detroit is just a couple of short hours from the beautiful land of lakes and forests known as Northern Michigan (5 hours from the Mackinac Bridge). Drive 2 hours in any direction from Cleveland and you either get corn or Youngstown.

Detroit city literally did a 360. Detroit is known for many things such as the eastern market, Greek town and bells island which the video never mentioned. I should add Detroit zoo, Detroit Shinola, art museum and their professional sports.
Also never mentioned is the current skyscraper Detroit is building which will be the tallest out of all the buildings in Detroit and in Michigan.
Last but not least Detroit was the Silicon Valley of America back in its heyday and it appears to be heading back to gain that title again thanks to Fords new building for ai and autonomous cars being built in downtown. To add Detroit was also known for building airplanes, X-ray machines, and famous music performers. The city was so ahead of the times they had the first home phones in USA, phone books (as a city) and first paved highway, police cars, traffic signal lights etc. also invented light bulb.
Currently Detroit has increased in a diverse population by 1,000 in a year and many new projects all over the city. Yahoo, google etc have moved in too and more coming.

As an Indianapolis native (I don't live there anymore), I appreciated the overall message in this video. Both Detroit and Cleveland are fine cities with fascinating histories. I wish people felt less compelled to follow a crowd and automatically regurgitate stereotypes about places, but instead thought for themselves. Although I prefer warmer climates to call home, Detroit and Cleveland both seem like lovely places to visit.

so i grew up in the Cleveland area and now live 30 minutes south of Detroit. I LOVE Cleveland. well the cleveland area. so much to offer. it gets a bad rap but really surprises people when they visit. 5 star chef run restuaruants. musuems and music. sports. and the gorgeous view of the lake. Detroit is also a really nice city in the downtown area. great various cultural resturaunts. the monorail to get around easily. lors of gorgeous architecture and a lot of art. I am loving living in Michigan. Much of michigan has wonderful nature. Michigan also is o a state with one of the most waterfront properties. i actually live on an island and have nearby one of the nations protected marshlands and a park that is one of the stops for many migatory birds. we also have quite a large Bald Eagle population. Weekends you see all types of boats on the river. from small fishing boats, small and very large personal watercrafts and frieghters. The midwest gives you the most for your money. There are oppoutinities for trades and many non college jobs can be successful if you have a good blue collar work ethic. it is a well kept secret how good life can be and we kinda like it that way.

As a native Metro Detroiter, I enjoyed this video! You did not mention that both NFL teams are the only two teams to go winless in a season (Detroit in 2008 and Cleveland in 2017). What makes Detroit unique is how close it is to Canada-the tunnel to Canada nor the Gordie Howe Bridge were not mentioned. (The Gordie Howe Bridge is set to open in 2024. The Ambassador Bridge is the current bridge that connects Detroit and Canada.) Detroit is really developing and becoming a very hot market. Most people I meet when I travel only hear the bad things, such as crime and poverty. Don’t quote me, but I believe in 1929 Detroit was the fastest growing city in the world. Also, the Michigan Central Station was not mentioned. All in all, I love this channel, these videos remind me of my 9th grade US History teacher who also taught my US Government class in the 11th grade. This is one of my favorite channels on CZcams!

I was born in Cleveland and lived there until I was 9, in '98, at which point I moved to Georgia and have been here since. I was too young to gauge Cleveland's quality relative to anywhere else, lacking a lot of other points of reference, but my house and yard there were small and cramped, and I certainly appreciated the bigger place we upgraded to in Georgia, and the more rural surroundings. I definitely have some happy memories of the city, though. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Sea World Cleveland were two of my favorite places in the world as a kid, and I spent a lot of time in the Rocky River Reservation, one of the Metroparks, especially its nature center. I remember the natural history museum being nice, too.
I've made a few short trips back to Cleveland to visit family, most recently in 2013, and I've become steadily more aware of how run down and... not great... the place is, and am not in any hurry to live there again. Even the zoo didn't impress on the last visit, and of course Sea World is long gone. The Rocky River Reservation is still very nice, though, and its nature center had been totally renovated since I was a kid, I'd say it's worth a visit. I need to get back up there and visit the Cleveland Aquarium at some point.
Anyway, I'm glad to know Cleveland is in the process of improving, and that Progressive Field is no longer haunted by sadness.
Thanks for sharing all that. The city still has a ways to go, but at least it's on the up and up.
Cleveland went to hell in the 2000s. I used to go to SeaWorld and Geauga Lake a lot as a kid...if only Six Flags didn't buy the park and ruin it. I can't speak on the zoo but they've made improvements in the gentrification zones of the city. Plus the region's housing market finally stabilized and incomes started slowly growing again.
I've been to the new aquarium many a time. Save your money not worth. Take the time to visit the Cleveland Art museum instead, its free and consistently ranked one of the best in the nation

I went to the art museum once when I was about five; I was way too young to appreciate art, so all I remember is that I knocked over a big metal guard rail (not my fault, I hardly touched it! It was just really badly balanced on its supports!). It made the loudest, most over-the-top crash you've ever heard, and just echoed through the whole building. A whole squad of security guards came charging in with their guns drawn, though they calmed right down when they realized what happened. We didn't get into any trouble or anything, but we left right away just to be safe.
Cleveland has a rapid transit line and also two other light rail lines. The rapid transit line is the red line I think and it goes to the airport and goes downtown and out to the east side period and they have a blue line and a green line rapid Transit line that serves the Rock and roll Hall of Fame the museum campus and then they go out to Shaker heights and some other area. They also have the terminal tower.
You say that Detroit has an arguably better music scene than Cleveland, but fail to mention the Cleveland Orchestra which is part of the "Big 5" and currently ranked 7th in the WORLD (2nd in the USA with Chicago Symphony ranked 1st). We also have Playhouse Square which is the second largest performing arts center in the US outside of New York City!

Also I can say for sure Cleveland and probably Detroit are very segregated. Cleveland's west side is predominantly white while the east side is in many parts exclusively black.

Down by w25th, fulton, clark area is heavily Spanish a lot of Puerto Ricans etc. Up 25th in ohio city and tremont you got ur hipster yuppie inner city area. Black mixed in all areas. But yeah east Cleveland basically all black and has the worst areas in the city.

Thank you very much for the shout-out! I really enjoyed this one, and as a Metro Detroiter, you were right on with these facts. Thankfully I haven't had to deal with the horrible Detroit rush hour commutes for a while as I've been working from home, but I'll be looking forward to that (not) once I can return to the office. Detroit isn't perfect, but it is great to see the city make a comeback. There are a lot of great parks and restaurants in downtown as well as in Midtown and Corktown. If you visit Detroit, bring your appetite!

Both were great cities that were devastated by manufacturing loss and white flight to suburbs. Live in Cleveland but also just outside Detroit, which I go back to often. Been all over the country and these remain two of my favorite places! You can have those sparkly, growth cities of the south and southwest.Plus we have the best accents! Basically the same as the accent associated with Chicago since it is basically a Great Lakes region accent that can be heard along the shorelines in the industrial cities from Buffalo to Milwaukee.

Far to often most media sources only highlight the negative side of Detroit. They always want to show the burned out blighted building and structures and never show the beautiful views and scenery of Detroit. They never talk about the good things that happen here. And you used some amazing footage. Its really appreciated. If its not already clear, I'm definitely proud of my home town, and anyone from Cleveland should be too after watching this video! Wish you had talked about the cultural attractions in both cities. Both have arts and culture that are much more respected and influential than their populations would normally create partially as a relic of their past status. The orchestras, museums, and arts culture in both have been incredibly tenacious and resilient through the economic hardships that the cities have endured and are part of what give both cities so much life.

Cleveland doesn't have much. He had to make it an even fight. We've got tons of attractions, Greektown, D.I.A., Science Center, etc.

As a Canadian and frequent visitor to both cities in the past, I'm quite fond of both of them. Cleveland and Detroit are about 4 hours from Toronto and both have good food, music and great people.

That's actually really nice to hear that these two cities are making a comeback. Especially considering they are a lot more affordable than my area. But most places are a lot more affordable than where I'm from since I'm from Santa Rosa which is the largest city in wine country up in NorCal just an hour North of San Francisco.
It's a great place to live up here in Santa Rosa, and it is large enough to have its own entertainment scene although not much of one, I have seen Lewis Black perform at the Luther Burbank center up here in Santa rosa, but most of the big events you have to go down to San Francisco to which fortunately is only an hour away. San Jose is also only 2 hours away from here and I think San Jose is a beautiful city. Sacramento is a little less than 2 hours away from here and I've been to a few conventions there as well. This reminds me we actually have toycon here in Santa Rosa although of course not this year with the pandemic . I wish I had gone to it so I'd go to a convention that's in my hometown but I just never gone. there was one year that LeVar Burton came to toycon here in Santa Rosa and I didn't go which I feel stupid for not going when it's right in my hometown.
That said some people I know including friends and family have left Santa Rosa because it's just getting too expensive here. One of my best friends moved all the way to Florida. My family that had been from here for so long all moved up to Idaho where it's way more affordable. I still have friends here in Santa Rosa and my wife and I and her family still live here, but it's just getting so expensive and now that there seems to be annual fires every year near or in this area since 2017 it's getting worse. They have the audacity to keep increasing the cost of living here despite people losing their homes and businesses due to the fires.
And one thing that really stands out about my hometown of Santa Rosa is that Charles Schulz actually resided here while making the Charlie Brown cartoons. We celebrate Charlie Brown all over Sonoma County. We got Charlie Brown statues all over the various towns in Sonoma county especially the largest City being Santa Rosa. We also got Snoopy statues all over and we also have Woodstock statues. We even have Lucy statues. I still remember when they were first unveiling these statues. It's been a long time since they started making these but I actually think at some point they should unveil a bunch of Linus statues as he's a pretty iconic character from the cartoon as well.
what's really cool about these statues though is that they all look different. It's because each of these statues were worked on by different corporations and groups. Even one of the Charlie Brown statues actually is wearing a San Francisco Giants Jersey because the San Francisco Giants actually paid to make one. Although I am an Oakland A's fan I wish the A's would have made one too.
Honestly I feel like in order to have any success in life I have to leave Santa Rosa. That is unless I somehow got lucky and found something great here. But the fact remains it just keeps getting more and more expensive here and it doesn't look like that's ever going to stop. It is a very desirable place to live but it's not fair that locals like myself who have been born and raised here are getting priced out. Especially when there's a lot of people from the most expensive city in the country San Francisco actually moving up here and increasing the cost of living as well. I love my hometown and it has such great charm, but like what so my friends have done and all my family that was from here has done I'm probably going to have to move out because it's getting too damn expensive.

Cute video. Only thing I’d say differently is that Detroit didn’t really steal the auto industry they’re the ones that started it. Henry Ford model t was made in Detroit and built the first auto plant there. Detroit has always been the hub of the auto industry. Often referred to as putting the world on wheels. Cleveland’s auto industry came after Detroit started it. Just like Flint later became an auto industrial city

Cleveland has heavy and light rail. You can take a train from the airport to downtown, with streetcars still running in the, um, streetcar suburbs.
The Health line (Bus-rapidtransit BRT) is a streetcar. And proven successful for a lot less money

I know this video is a year old but it’s worth mentioning the food scene and beer scene on the westside of Cleveland are awesome.

Detroit city literally did a 360. Detroit is known for many things such as the eastern market, Greek town and bells island which the video never mentioned. I should add Detroit zoo, Detroit Shinola, art museum and their professional sports.
Also never mentioned is the current skyscraper Detroit is building which will be the tallest out of all the buildings in Detroit and in Michigan.
Last but not least Detroit was the Silicon Valley of America back in its heyday and it appears to be heading back to gain that title again thanks to Fords new building for ai and autonomous cars being built in downtown. To add Detroit was also known for building airplanes, X-ray machines, and famous music performers. The city was so ahead of the times they had the first home phones in USA, phone books (as a city) and first paved highway, police cars, traffic signal lights etc. also invented light bulb.
Currently Detroit has increased in a diverse population by 1,000 in a year and many new projects all over the city. Yahoo, google etc have moved in too and more coming.
Watch out The Sleeping Giant woke up. Detroit is back alive. Cleavland is also turning around too. I wish both northern cities well as they return to glory . Bbb

I'm a lifelong Detroiter, and that song at beginning is hilarious. I laughed until I was almost crying 🤣🤣🤣. I knew both cities had alot of similarities because we're both rust belt cities with alot of the same social problems. Ironically, most of us in Detroit have relatives in Cleveland and vice-versa. Thank God both cities are slowly getting better because it sure couldn't get any worse lol. Great informative video, thank you for sharing 😊👍
