    Illinois and Indiana
Two bordering Midwestern states in these United States. Both also border Lake Michigan and the Ohio River.
And yes, both have a lot in common, starting with the fact that, according to some metrics, both share Chicagoland, or the Chicago metropolitan area. Well yeah, sure Chicagoland is mostly in Illinois, as is...well...Chicago, the third largest city in the country, but Northwest Indiana is also often lumped into the Chicago metro. Chicagoland makes up around 65% of the entire population of Illinois and 10% of the entire population of Indiana.
Both are part of the Rust Belt, a region of the country known for declining industry and run down factories. Even decades after most of these factories have shut down, several cities in both states continue to lose population each year.
And yet, manufacturing is still a major industry in both. Indiana is the country’s leading steel producer and second largest car manufacturing state. Illinois is known for making machinery, electrical equipment, transportation equipment, and food processing. Related to this, both rank towards the bottom of all 50 states in terms of pollution, although Illinois ranks better.
Other major industries in both include healthcare, retail, and education.
The average age of residents in both is the same. (38)
The biggest religion in both is Christianity, but of those more identify as Roman Catholic in Illinois and more identify as Evangelical Protestant in Indiana. Oh, and Illinois residents are more religious, overall.
Both have very similar climates. Specifically, a humid continental climate throughout most of the states, and humid subtropical climate in the southern portions. Basically, the further south you go in both states, the more precipitation and the more hot it gets in the summer and less cold it gets in the winter. Both get tornadoes, but flooding is definitely the most common natural disaster in both. For thousands of years, various American Indian tribes lived in the area.
Illinois gets its name from another French dude named René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who explored the area in the 1600s. He named a river after a group of American Indian tribes known collectively as the Illinois Confederation, or Illiniwek, which translates to “the best people.” A Philadelphia trading company promptly came out that way to make some money, and, long story short, ended up working out a deal to get some land out there. They called the area “Indiana,” or “Land of the Indians.” Wow, how creative.

Texas is one of the hottest states, Alberta is one of the coldest provinces. Texas is socially conservative, Alberta isn't (this is debatable). They are both right ring - both are fiscally conservative. Texas has a lot of Latinos, Alberta has a lot of Asians. Both rely on oil. Both are economic powerhouses and are wealthy. The Texan economy has been booming, the Alberta economy has been retracting. Texans like football, Albertans like hockey. Texas is flat, but touches an ocean. Alberta has mountains, but is landlocked. They are roughly the same size (Texas a bit larger). Texas gets hurricanes, Alberta gets hail. Texas loses relatively small amounts in federal taxes to the poorer states. Alberta loses tens of billions in transfer payments to Quebec and the Maritimes. Anything else?

I lived in Indiana for the first 22 years of my life. I’ve lived in Illinois for the last 4 years of my life.
Outside of Chicago, there is very little to do in Illinois. Also, it’s more expensive to live here, even outside of Chicago. I live 4.5 hours from Chicago, but my house was still $30,000 more than my brother’s house of a similar age, size, and condition. Additionally, I pay over 3X more in property tax than my parents in Indiana. Groceries tend to be higher here. Gas is more expensive. I made less money in Indiana, but was more comfortable there.

So I've lived in indiana for practically all my life. My family moved there when we were 6 and I had lived there up until 3 months ago, for a grand total of 18 years of being a Hoosier. Illinois definitely has that Chicagoland vs the rest divide, but i can attest that the northern part of the state is different than the southern part. I grew up in Northern Indiana, and i can say there is definitely a great influence from Illinois and Michigan where i grew up. Then I went to college in East Central Indiana starting in 2013, and I just gotta say it was a bit of a culture shock. I went from growing up in a city where people spoke in a fairly typical Midwestern dialect, to moving 2.5 hours south and all the sudden people are speaking with southern accents everywhere. There have been numerous times where i just simply couldn't understand what people were saying. There is a bit of a north/south divide in indiana, with the north generally being a bit more urban and generally being better off than the southern portion of the state (at least from my experience). The biggest cultural difference is Northern Indiana residents seem to look up to Michigan and over to illinois and Ohio, whereas southern Indiana residents seem to look down more towards Kentucky and even Tennessee.

THE OLDEST MOTOR RACE IN THE WORLD...THE FASTEST MOTOR RACE IN THE WORLD. THE MOST ATTENDED SINGLE DAY SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORLD. ..TWICE AS MANY AS THE KENTUCKY DERBY. THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS MOTOR RACE IN THE WORLD..THE LARGEST SPORTING VENUE IN THE WORLD WITH THE MOST SEATS.
YOU HARDLY WATCH CARS GO AROUND IN CIRCLES WHEN YOU ATTEND FOR YOU ONLY SEE A SMALL PORTION OF THE TRACK EVEN AT HIGHER LEVELS BECAUSE IT'S 2.5 MILES TO GO AROUND IT...THE INDY 500'S ANNUAL ECONOMIC IMPACT IS THE LARGEST IN THE U.S., 3 TIMES THE MUCH BALLYHOOED SUPER BOWL.
      OVERRATED HARDLY...
      UNDERRATED BY PEOPLE LIKE YOU
      DEFINITELY..
HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ATTENDING MY 36TH STRAIGHT INDY 500 ON AUGUST 23RD IF THEY DON'T POSTPONE IT AGAIN BECAUSE OF COVID19

For me, the best parts of Indiana aren't mentioned here: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana University Basketball, and the beauty of Southern Indiana, specifically Brown County and the surrounding area. But I'm a homer, so there's that.

It is very beautiful in the south of Indiana, but you have a lottttt of racists who live in that region who made my ex who was black feel very unsafe by giving her death stares for being with me a white man. Of course not everyone is like this but even near Brown County some white men tried to Lynch a black man not that long ago in the woods.
