Is it a ‘new’ Glen that has faded or is it possibly an antique? It might have more value if it’s left untouched, if it is a genuine artifact. If purchased second hand, does it have a label? Was there a cap badge with it? (Not that cap badges are proof of anything, collectors and dealers will often put badges on hats to try to increase the value of both.)

This is much later than orig post. But for regular wool felt hats - first brush it well w/ hat brush or pssibly a clothes brush, then you steam it over a kettle or pot of boiling water, then brush again. Try to soak up oils/? With a white cotton cloth. If still bad, maybe hand wash with wool friendly soap if you really want to go that route, and reshape. I have washed a US Army beret, it is difficult to keep it from shrinking, but came out fairly well. Used for the alternate Class C (fatigues) or the field, bought a new one for Class A & B uniforms.

The first step is brush with a stiff hat brush. Then reevaluate. If the hat doesn’t look presentable, retire it and buy a new one.

Really a Glengarry is only $50 to $100. What kind of a Scotsman are you? I have been wearing the same Glen for 25 years and dont feel like I have gotten my moneys worth out of it yet and I have worn it to over 600 piping gigs and countless other times, But I am a true Scot Deep pockets and short arms. Just kidding with you, good info just wish you had better news for me.
