+GamePhysics basically, common sense would dictate that the suppressor lowers bullet velocity, and in turn range. but in this case, because the ranges are so great, and the ammunition is not subsonic in the first place, the additional barrel length from the suppressor actually gave the rifle about another 100 meters of range.

@Charles Lindberg While the inventor did coin the invention a "silencer", that would only apply as a name to that specific item he marketed and sold. The item in general sold by numerous other companies and different models is correctly referred to as a "suppressor" as they almost never manage to silence the report of a firearm but are only able to suppress it. This is a decision agreed upon by firearm experts all over the world. Everything else you've stated is entirely missing the point and context of the myths he stated in the video

Right but people shooting with a suppressor often will use subsonic ammo, which does decrease bullet velocity and range. So it wasn’t a myth about the suppressor itself. They didn’t even address this in the video.

As it turns out, if you know nothing about rifles, you know nothing of the "myths" he was referring to. It is a common misconception (perpetuated by video games) that a suppressor will reduce distance and velocity. This video proved both myths wrong. Both distance and velocity are actually increased. Also, he specifically mentions the "myth" of the sub-moa group; that just because someone shoots a sub-moa group doesn't mean they have a sub-moa rifle and that a 1/4" group doesn't carry out to any distance. A 1" group at 100 yds. is amplified to a 15" group at 1,500 yds. CZcams is not a replacement for qualified instruction and should only be used as a supplement to enhance your pre-existing knowledge of a particular subject.

That's an awesome gun, but those shots were incredible. Most of us could take that same gun and not make those shots. People can laugh if they want, but when I hit a 12 inch target at 500 i'm happy.
TexanUSMC8089 those shots weren’t “incredible”. Heck in 2 months of going to the range every second weekend I’ve taught myself to hit a milk jug at 1000 meters with a 243. I taught myself to do load development based on what I researched from many sources,then learned about ballistics and drop,load tuning and with that 243,and many other cartridges as well. My 260 will run 1400 meters before it drops subsonic,making 24” gongs easy. Anyone can do it as long as they are consistent.

So what? Sure bullet does drop more, but when shooting past 300 yards you need correct firing solution anyway. Whats with the need for speed addiction.
Because you still have to carry that rifle to your spot, preferably consealed. Certain rifles are just desinged for different stuff. Philosophy of use. .308 to 800yards. .338lm to 1400yards, .50bmg antimaterial and beyond 1400. Sure if you carry that rifle in your truck to local range, you can have 40 inch barrel if you wish. But that rifle isnt yours or isnt desinged for prone range shooting.
I don't hunt at more than 300 yds, but if I had to punch paper at 1000, maybe I'll go with a 30 cal, or something in 7mm or 6mm (edit 6.5mm) because it's lighter to carry, cheaper, less recoil and the faster round makes for less wind deflection. It's just seems to me there is lots of lost potential in a short barrel 338. But then again, it's like cars. If you like it and it works for you, it's good and there's no point arguing.

Are these adjustments before battlefield prior to the actual target shooting or at the same time when you are in the enemy zone, wanna take down the target? Because, If You are long range sniper in the enemy zone, looking for your target for days, suddenly you see him a mile away, you need to shoot him before he disappears for you don’t know how long again, no time for adjusting your gun with target by shooting around it, ---- what do you do in that case ?
Great video, and so well filmed. Just one thing I don’t agree with is that the idea of sub-MOA is a myth. It depends on the shooting type, distance and related factors. At longer distances due to wind, projectile speed and related factors, groups will open up and sub-moa becomes unachievable at some point. At sub-600 with a good gun/load combo, half moa isn’t unachievable, but rather, can be a viable goal that allows you to develop loading and shooting knowledge and skills that are critical to distance shooting anywhere even close to an MOA. Two years ago, when I was shooting a lot more before a lack of rain and fire restrictions, with my 308 and 5 load variation averaged across the 1425 round season I shot .594 MOA not counting my routine of 5 round gun and sight acclimation. My 300 yard season average across 906 round on my 6.5 CM was .414 and my 1,000 yard 112 rounds on my 338 LM was .877 MOA. All of these were post gun warm-up on hand loads. I did some 1,500 - 2,000 yard shooting, but that is always gong shooting. In fact, given wind variations and unmeasurable misses, I think that the idea of an MOA gun/load combo is the real myth. How do you even track that honestly, and what would it really mean? You picked only still days at even temps? Some types of shooting revolves around consistent 3’s, while some even lower.
John Doe Still, why deal with the recoil if you're not going to fully utilize the cartridge? There are other rounds that'll hit at that distance without killing your shoulder, and they cost less too.
FishyMacaroon6: 1. L. Vickers is a has-been with loads of funding and sponsors, so cost isn't really a factor for him as it pertains to shooting. 2. As for recoil, it isn't nearly as bad as you'd think. Muzzle brakes go a long way toward mitigating recoil.
As a gunsmith, I have been informed by some clients that the rate a bullet drops is due entirely to the price of the ammunition. Apparently, the more one spends the longer the laws of gravity leave ammo alone. They might have attempted to state that some overpriced ammo brands rated at a very high speed allowed a difference in trajectory but was unable to explain why. Actually, in the retail world the customer is frequently wrong because of many misconceptions and myths. Not wanting to ask questions in a misguided fear to appear dumb is the biggest problem.

It's not the length it's the freebore boost. You have pressure behind the bullet pushing it through unrestricted airspace because the bullet isn't gripping the rifling of the barrel.
It's both. It's still primarily the length, however. Without a tight grip around the Bullet; some gasses could escape, and that wouldn't be as effective as a Bullet going down the Barrel.
+Big6Duke There is nothing mythical about freebore boost. It's real, it happens plenty of data to back it up. My case in particular was 32fps with a Thunderbeast 30P-1 with a 6.5x47Lapua.
+INSTALL: You do realize, I hope, that even if the bullet did not slow down, (as if earth were airless) the bullet still drops much further per each succeeding second, or per each succeeding 100 yds, as it moves away from the gun. For instance, in the first second the bullet drops 16ft off the boreline. At the end of 2 seconds it is 64ft below the boreline. At the end of 3 seconds, 144ft below the boreline. This all tends to point out just how improbable are some of these hilariously long shots at animals, using laser rangefinders, uploaded to utube. But I guess we expect naïve bullshit on utube......
While I was disappointed the title was misleading I did enjoy watching those guys shoot. Im a newby slowly building up my first LR set up. So far I have a Daniel Defense 6.5 CM topped by a Vortex Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 EBR-7C and slowly paying off an Altas BT46. next buy will be an Area 419 Hellfire break and maybe after that a silencer Co or Thunder beast ultra 7. Maybe its just me but I always enjoyed iron sights vs scopes.
This has to be one of your best videos Larry! Thank you for putting it up. Nothing against your first attempt last year, but Gunsite and their instructors are some of the best on the planet. Performing at those distances require a "system" of sorts - having a second person who is very experienced as your spotter/ballistics dude really helps.
There are many kinds of suppressors and low speed bullets to be used by those suppressors to prevent bullet reach speed of sound . Imo this is a special suppressor for sniper rifles that effetcs as an addonn barrel to 20' . It reacts as a 23' barrel and increases its effective range ..
I love marksmanship I varsity lettered in High school J.R.O.T.C. then became a Rifle and pistol expert in the U.S. Marines eventually getting battalion high shooter on the old K.D. course with a 243 out of a possible 250 i wound up becoming a school trained Range coach. I trained at Quantico Virginia and learned the rudiments of B.R.A.S.S. and night shooting as well as range estimation how to correct a shooters mistakes. how to instruct Marksmanship. bow to be consistently good at the good habits of marksmanship. how important front sight clear tip is. (iron sights) and how important it is to believe in ur dope adjustments and to do a proper ZERO. I shot expert at camp Schwab in Okinawa Japan with a tropical storm raging all around us. wind and rain. (affects the shooters mental state more than than the bullet down range) weather can be dealt with in ur mind and u can overcome the weather and still score hits on target even at 500 yards with iron sights M-16 (a2) Okinawa U.D.P. 1988 Hog Battery 3/11 Semper-fi

Suppressors may give the bullet A LITTLE more velocity out of the barrel, but the main thing is that it calms the air outside of the muzzle and gives the bullet a cleaner exit it out of the rifle, so the bullet gets stabilized sooner and better than without a suppressor.
Citations fo this "calm air" business? Sure suppressors can/do improve accuracy, more to do with barrel harmonics than anything to do with air stabilization from any information i have come across.Simply adding weight to the front of many rifles,without any suppression or braking, improves accuracy. Because a can traps all the turbulent air behind the projectile as it exits, unlike a brake that creates turbulent air, and especially a barrel with no muzzle device that shoots air and gases out in the same direction as the bullet and in front of the bullet. The velocity you gain isn't really enough to matter.

I like shorter barrels but on any magnum w heavy bullet you need barrel length for powder burn to achieve required velocity. My 338 w 300gn berger and 27inch barrel is hitting constantly at 2000 72moa at 4200ft elevation 27 percent humidity

+kramotakra It definitely includes a ton of practice and range time too. I can say that Todd's teaching technique is very calming and confidence inspiring. Before I took his class I struggled to get out to 1k, I had the same cockeyed body position, and inconsistent fundamentals like I saw in this video. The old guys like Larry and a lot of commenters really struggle with letting go of out dated ideas such as longer barrels and really wrenching down on the gun. Shooting a 20 inch 338 with inferior 250 grain bullets with a crappy BC proved you weren't using the right gear to shoot at distance. Not to mention your body position for LR shooting is garbage. And WTF kind of world class spotter says favor left/right edge? With a properly trued ballistic calculator and a world class "spotter" he should be calling out baseline windage in mils. And then calling out the change in mils as the wind changes before the shot. Oh and you didn't disprove any myths.
+Shane Kennedy the implied myth was "one shot one kill" At really long ranges, things like temperature, wind at your locations and wind at the target not being the same direction and speed, the coriolis effect and spend drift and mirrage, make first round hits past 1200 yards VERY HARD and most shooters connect with the second shot after a correction. the worlds longest kill with a 338 lapua connected on the second shot
So we found the transonic phase of a 338lm 250 Berger out of 20" bbl ( Apprx Mach 1.4).. Now if they would have fixed Ol' Larry's shooting position and the rest of his fundamentals it could have been a bit more consistent even in transonic. They would have also found that the round would have stabled out a bit once it went subsonic and got through the unstable trans phase. Also the Baro pressure and temp have a lil to do with but its the density altitude that you're looking for. What's the air density for the current ambient air temp at your physical elevation. The other factor effecting changes in elevation come ups is the enteral temp of the gun. You can expect your cold bore data to be the same as a hot bore. If you're slow firing a bolt gun and allowing the barrel to cool back to ambient temp it's consistent, but under rapid fire, or worse shooting a gas gun, it's going to effect your data a whole lot.
yes a suppressor adds length but not rifled length. I think it may have more to do with the crowning of the barrel. poor crowning causes unpredictable ballistics. a suppressor creates a more uniform release of gasses following the projectile leading to more stable flight
Learned a valuable thing, when a supersonic gun's round goes below the sound barrier, that distance is really the end of it's effective range. Didn't know that, makes perfect sense though.
One part I loved in the Marines was rifle qualification week. Everyone has to score at 500 yards with iron sights. On top of that every rifle I was issued must have had about 50,000 rounds fired through it. The boot camp rifle was the worst. It would fire again when I released the trigger. I never once ran an entire magazine without it jamming. Ahh, good times. I miss those days.
Yeah, 500. The front sight is the same size as the target at that range. Every Marine has to do that. I believe infantry has more stringent requirements. I was a simple fiber optic repairman.
Robert Marks thats crazy man, i didn't know they did that. i was kind of skeptical at first because 500 yards with iron sights seems crazy. but, i guess they make the targets 6x6' even so thats still a crazy shot. realistically probably not going to hit moving enemy combatant at 500 yards with iron sights, but hey i bet you would scare the crap out of them by just by hitting close to their position.
He used supersonic (faster than speed of sound) ammunition in this video. Subsonic (slower than speed of sound) ammo is what makes some guns tolerable to operate with little to no ear protection.
+ElectricPyroclast It's got nothing to do with the bullet speed. I find 5.56mm fine without protection and that's supersonic. The noise level is determined by the size of the explosion behind the bullet and how far away the barrel end is.

i didn't hear any Coriolis Effect adjustments. Is this because they do not exist? I downloaded the Army sniper and artillery manuals and neither mentioned the effect. What gives?
No they do exist but, the range could be facing south and since the earth rotates that way it wont effect the shot, could be wrong but thats one possibility.
That AX 338 looks like a great weapon. I used an Accuracy international L96A1 back when I was a sniper in a infantry C.O.P unit (British army), menu year's ago. You are so lucky in the US (and other nations) where you can buy and use these weapons all the time. In the UK, if I have a baseball bat in the boot (trunk) of my car and I don't have a ball to go with it. I will be arrested for carrying a deadly weapon. Don't ever let the liberals take your gun rights from you.

The erratic behavior at those distances isn't so much the gyroscopic instability through the transonic region so much as it is the wild variations in wind over the time of flight causing changes in the magnus forces. Once enough rotational velocity is lost, the bullet will flip 180 degrees placing the boat tail forward and it stabilizes again. The time of flight can approach 3-4 seconds at those target ranges and magnus forces change with all the wind changes during the flight. On top of that, bullet trace doesn't exist when projectiles are sub-sonic because there is no longer a shockwave being produced.
And yet the Accuracy Intentional AW (predecessor to AX, using .338 has a proven accuracy (verified sniper kill confirmed by GPS) to 2475m (2707 yds) in Hot climates, So I guess your expertise isn't what you think it is. .
That was British sniper Craig Harrison. His rifle had a 27" barrel. Most AX338's come with the same barrel length. I can't understand why anyone would want a 20" barrel for long range shooting.

One myth specifically called out was the need for sub-MOA precision. Tactical shooting does not typically involve extremely small targets.

I nearly bought one of those Steyr 50 cals years ago, when they were the only 50 you could buy in Australia (bolt action). Wasn't sure how good the bull pup would be on a 50, plus of course the price. 8 and a half grand, when an Armalite fifty bolt gun was 2 thou.

@Charles Lindberg While the inventor did coin the invention a "silencer", that would only apply as a name to that specific item he marketed and sold. The item in general sold by numerous other companies and different models is correctly referred to as a "suppressor" as they almost never manage to silence the report of a firearm but are only able to suppress it. This is a decision agreed upon by firearm experts all over the world.

Right but people shooting with a suppressor often will use subsonic ammo, which does decrease bullet velocity and range. So it wasn’t a myth about the suppressor itself. They didn’t even address this in the video.

As it turns out, if you know nothing about rifles, you know nothing of the "myths" he was referring to. It is a common misconception (perpetuated by video games) that a suppressor will reduce distance and velocity. This video proved both myths wrong. Both distance and velocity are actually increased. Also, he specifically mentions the "myth" of the sub-moa group; that just because someone shoots a sub-moa group doesn't mean they have a sub-moa rifle and that a 1/4" group doesn't carry out to any distance. A 1" group at 100 yds. is amplified to a 15" group at 1,500 yds. CZcams is not a replacement for qualified instruction and should only be used as a supplement to enhance your pre-existing knowledge of a particular subject.
It's a stupid argument anyway because the general implication is you're using subsonic AMMO alongside a suppressor which therefore lowers your velocity.

TexanUSMC8089 those shots weren’t “incredible”. Heck in 2 months of going to the range every second weekend I’ve taught myself to hit a milk jug at 1000 meters with a 243.
I taught myself to do load development based on what I researched from many sources,then learned about ballistics and drop,load tuning and with that 243,and many other cartridges as well.
My 260 will run 1400 meters before it drops subsonic,making 24” gongs easy.
Anyone can do it as long as they are consistent.
Not everyone who has the knowledge has the ability to pass it.
Having the knowledge and being able to convey it to the people who do not have it is what being a Professor is all about.

What's with all the 20" barrels on 338 magnums? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a large caliber like that.

I don't hunt at more than 300 yds, but if I had to punch paper at 1000, maybe I'll go with a 30 cal, or something in 7mm or 6mm (edit 6.5mm) because it's lighter to carry, cheaper, less recoil and the faster round makes for less wind deflection. It's just seems to me there is lots of lost potential in a short barrel 338. But then again, it's like cars. If you like it and it works for you, it's good and there's no point arguing.

Great video, and so well filmed. Just one thing I don’t agree with is that the idea of sub-MOA is a myth. It depends on the shooting type, distance and related factors. At longer distances due to wind, projectile speed and related factors, groups will open up and sub-moa becomes unachievable at some point. At sub-600 with a good gun/load combo, half moa isn’t unachievable, but rather, can be a viable goal that allows you to develop loading and shooting knowledge and skills that are critical to distance shooting anywhere even close to an MOA.
Two years ago, when I was shooting a lot more before a lack of rain and fire restrictions, with my 308 and 5 load variation averaged across the 1425 round season I shot .594 MOA not counting my routine of 5 round gun and sight acclimation. My 300 yard season average across 906 round on my 6.5 CM was .414 and my 1,000 yard 112 rounds on my 338 LM was .877 MOA. All of these were post gun warm-up on hand loads.
I did some 1,500 - 2,000 yard shooting, but that is always gong shooting. In fact, given wind variations and unmeasurable misses, I think that the idea of an MOA gun/load combo is the real myth. How do you even track that honestly, and what would it really mean? You picked only still days at even temps?
Some types of shooting revolves around consistent 3’s, while some even lower.
Why a long range cartridge like the 338 Lapua Magnum and use a short barrel ? Thats like putting snow tires on a dragster.

John Doe Still, why deal with the recoil if you're not going to fully utilize the cartridge? There are other rounds that'll hit at that distance without killing your shoulder, and they cost less too.

As a gunsmith, I have been informed by some clients that the rate a bullet drops is due entirely to the price of the ammunition. Apparently, the more one spends the longer the laws of gravity leave ammo alone. They might have attempted to state that some overpriced ammo brands rated at a very high speed allowed a difference in trajectory but was unable to explain why. Actually, in the retail world the customer is frequently wrong because of many misconceptions and myths. Not wanting to ask questions in a misguided fear to appear dumb is the biggest problem.

1: the extended barrel length means that the bullet receives more 'correction' before exiting the barrel
2: by the extended time inside the barrel, the gasses has a longer time to propel the bullet = greater velocity and inertia = range

What i have said all along adding a suppressor to a gun will give it some extra range capability, because you are in theory adding length.
It's not the length it's the freebore boost. You have pressure behind the bullet pushing it through unrestricted airspace because the bullet isn't gripping the rifling of the barrel.
It's both. It's still primarily the length, however. Without a tight grip around the Bullet; some gasses could escape, and that wouldn't be as effective as a Bullet going down the Barrel.

The bullet doesn't tumble when going back from supersonic THAT is a myth
it just travels slower making the drop more every yard/meter and more influenced by environment.
+INSTALL: You do realize, I hope, that even if the bullet did not slow down, (as if earth were airless) the bullet still drops much further per each succeeding second, or per each succeeding 100 yds, as it moves away from the gun. For instance, in the first second the bullet drops 16ft off the boreline. At the end of 2 seconds it is 64ft below the boreline. At the end of 3 seconds, 144ft below the boreline.
This all tends to point out just how improbable are some of these hilariously long shots at animals, using laser rangefinders, uploaded to utube.

While I was disappointed the title was misleading I did enjoy watching those guys shoot. Im a newby slowly building up my first LR set up. So far I have a Daniel Defense 6.5 CM topped by a Vortex Razor Gen II 4.5-27x56 EBR-7C and slowly paying off an Altas BT46. next buy will be an Area 419 Hellfire break and maybe after that a silencer Co or Thunder beast ultra 7. Maybe its just me but I always enjoyed iron sights vs scopes.

There are many kinds of suppressors and low speed bullets to be used by those suppressors to prevent bullet reach speed of sound . Imo this is a special suppressor for sniper rifles that effetcs as an addonn barrel to 20' . It reacts as a 23' barrel and increases its effective range ..

(iron sights) and how important it is to believe in ur dope adjustments and to do a proper ZERO.
I shot expert at camp Schwab in Okinawa Japan with a tropical storm raging all around us. wind and rain. (affects the shooters mental state more than than the bullet down range) weather can be dealt with in ur mind and u can overcome the weather and still score hits on target even at 500 yards with iron sights M-16 (a2) Okinawa U.D.P. 1988 Hog Battery 3/11 Semper-fi

Suppressors may give the bullet A LITTLE more velocity out of the barrel, but the main thing is that it calms the air outside of the muzzle and gives the bullet a cleaner exit it out of the rifle, so the bullet gets stabilized sooner and better than without a suppressor.

Sure suppressors can/do improve accuracy, more to do with barrel harmonics than anything to do with air stabilization from any information i have come across.Simply adding weight to the front of many rifles,without any suppression or braking, improves accuracy. Because a can traps all the turbulent air behind the projectile as it exits, unlike a brake that creates turbulent air, and especially a barrel with no muzzle device that shoots air and gases out in the same direction as the bullet and in front of the bullet. The velocity you gain isn't really enough to matter.

I like shorter barrels but on any magnum w heavy bullet you need barrel length for powder burn to achieve required velocity. My 338 w 300gn berger and 27inch barrel is hitting constantly at 2000 72moa at 4200ft elevation 27 percent humidity

+kramotakra It definitely includes a ton of practice and range time too. I can say that Todd's teaching technique is very calming and confidence inspiring. Before I took his class I struggled to get out to 1k, I had the same cockeyed body position, and inconsistent fundamentals like I saw in this video. The old guys like Larry and a lot of commenters really struggle with letting go of out dated ideas such as longer barrels and really wrenching down on the gun. Long distance is really not that hard.....

Shooting a 20 inch 338 with inferior 250 grain bullets with a crappy BC proved you weren't using the right gear to shoot at distance. Not to mention your body position for LR shooting is garbage. And WTF kind of world class spotter says favor left/right edge? With a properly trued ballistic calculator and a world class "spotter" he should be calling out baseline windage in mils. And then calling out the change in mils as the wind changes before the shot. Oh and you didn't disprove any myths.

+Shane Kennedy the implied myth was "one shot one kill" At really long ranges, things like temperature, wind at your locations and wind at the target not being the same direction and speed, the coriolis effect and spend drift and mirrage, make first round hits past 1200 yards VERY HARD and most shooters connect with the second shot after a correction. the worlds longest kill with a 338 lapua connected on the second shot
So we found the transonic phase of a 338lm 250 Berger out of 20" bbl ( Apprx Mach 1.4).. Now if they would have fixed Ol' Larry's shooting position and the rest of his fundamentals it could have been a bit more consistent even in transonic. They would have also found that the round would have stabled out a bit once it went subsonic and got through the unstable trans phase. Also the Baro pressure and temp have a lil to do with but its the density altitude that you're looking for. What's the air density for the current ambient air temp at your physical elevation. The other factor effecting changes in elevation come ups is the enteral temp of the gun. You can expect your cold bore data to be the same as a hot bore. If you're slow firing a bolt gun and allowing the barrel to cool back to ambient temp it's consistent, but under rapid fire, or worse shooting a gas gun, it's going to effect your data a whole lot.
yes a suppressor adds length but not rifled length. I think it may have more to do with the crowning of the barrel. poor crowning causes unpredictable ballistics. a suppressor creates a more uniform release of gasses following the projectile leading to more stable flight

Learned a valuable thing, when a supersonic gun's round goes below the sound barrier, that distance is really the end of it's effective range. Didn't know that, makes perfect sense though.
unfortunately i could never afford to buy one of these rifles. fortunately i would never need one these rifles. i never made a shot past 300 yards.
One part I loved in the Marines was rifle qualification week. Everyone has to score at 500 yards with iron sights. On top of that every rifle I was issued must have had about 50,000 rounds fired through it. The boot camp rifle was the worst. It would fire again when I released the trigger. I never once ran an entire magazine without it jamming. Ahh, good times. I miss those days.

Robert Marks thats crazy man, i didn't know they did that. i was kind of skeptical at first because 500 yards with iron sights seems crazy. but, i guess they make the targets 6x6' even so thats still a crazy shot. realistically probably not going to hit moving enemy combatant at 500 yards with iron sights, but hey i bet you would scare the crap out of them by just by hitting close to their position.

He used supersonic (faster than speed of sound) ammunition in this video. Subsonic (slower than speed of sound) ammo is what makes some guns tolerable to operate with little to no ear protection.
+ElectricPyroclast It's got nothing to do with the bullet speed. I find 5.56mm fine without protection and that's supersonic. The noise level is determined by the size of the explosion behind the bullet and how far away the barrel end is.

i didn't hear any Coriolis Effect adjustments. Is this because they do not exist? I downloaded the Army sniper and artillery manuals and neither mentioned the effect. What gives?
No they do exist but, the range could be facing south and since the earth rotates that way it wont effect the shot, could be wrong but thats one possibility.

The coriolis effect is the least important factor in long range shooting.
That AX 338 looks like a great weapon. I used an Accuracy international L96A1 back when I was a sniper in a infantry C.O.P unit (British army), menu year's ago. You are so lucky in the US (and other nations) where you can buy and use these weapons all the time. In the UK, if I have a baseball bat in the boot (trunk) of my car and I don't have a ball to go with it. I will be arrested for carrying a deadly weapon. Don't ever let the liberals take your gun rights from you.

Most of the shootings happened in places where people are distracted and more than that, disarmed already, i.e schools, bars, concerts, because mass shooters are cowards and want to minimize the risk. You make a place riskier to attack, you decrease the odds that someone is going to attack. Gun free zones don't work.

The erratic behavior at those distances isn't so much the gyroscopic instability through the transonic region so much as it is the wild variations in wind over the time of flight causing changes in the magnus forces. Once enough rotational velocity is lost, the bullet will flip 180 degrees placing the boat tail forward and it stabilizes again. The time of flight can approach 3-4 seconds at those target ranges and magnus forces change with all the wind changes during the flight. On top of that, bullet trace doesn't exist when projectiles are sub-sonic because there is no longer a shockwave being produced.

And yet the Accuracy Intentional AW (predecessor to AX, using .338 has a proven accuracy (verified sniper kill confirmed by GPS) to 2475m (2707 yds) in Hot climates, So I guess your expertise isn't what you think it is.

That was British sniper Craig Harrison. His rifle had a 27" barrel. Most AX338's come with the same barrel length. I can't understand why anyone would want a 20" barrel for long range shooting.
In fact I just found a video on here about a Canadian sniper with a confirmed kill at 2.14 miles. So these guys aren't exactly experts.
