    The best beginner video ever. I wanted to learn basic fighting and went through dozens of videos but this one was the only one i thought truly helped me. I watch this video regularly while practicing for about an hour in front of the mirror.
    Even though it is an old video it is gold.

  • @bashlivingstonstampededojo882

    I've taken up karate and boxing and did 6 months of BBJ I agree with what Bruce Lee once said take what is useful and discard what is not awesome video stance is very fundamental

      Thanks for the comment, bash! Indeed, Bruce Lee was way ahead of his time in terms of martial arts ideology, and, most importantly, execution on making his system a reality. We're working hard to move the industry forward in the same direction, glad you're following our content. Keep on training! - Patrick

    I started martial arts when I was six years old and I was taught exactly this stance for fighting, I went to another school years later and was told to have my feet more squared off and torso forward (did lots of damage to my hip flexors and groin muscle from that stance). Very nice to see this stance introduced again.

    Returning sunscriber, bern training martial arts since 2008. Mostly Kung Fu some Krav Maga and some BJJ and kickboxing. Familiar concepts, but revisiting them has value, and this also makes me more conscious of subconscious which are good snd ones which need tweaking.

    Wow, Its shocking how you guys still have so few subscribers. All the videos i've seen so far have been straight to the point despite also explaining the little nuances on the different techniques.
    As a guy who's done 2 years of Taekwando and 4 years of Aikido I'm so glad I found your channel by chance, the two disciplines i've practiced in are fundamentally different and sometimes don't really compliment each other, but they do tend to cover each other's weaknesses. This video in particular showcased a lot of different ways you can adapt and change your fighting stance, its always a good idea to keep your style flexible and not just focus on one thing.
    Also the content isn't boring or too over the top like a lot of other channels.

    I have practiced wing chun for 4 years, Judo at a folk highschool for ½ year and a korean martial art called Taekkyon. But I also study all martial arts on youtube and through books. Then I practice the moves I see on my own time, so I don't just see but also do the movements :).

  • @firstnamelastname9179

    Hmm. I never thought of it as size actually influencing the way you SHOULD move. I always just thought of it as lighter weights being more technically talented than heavier guys because they have less weight to throw around during the fight and can do more training reps. Very helpful explanation. I knew that little guys should move more in BJJ, but I didn't think of it also holding true on the feet.

    Good stuff. Realy like your condensed approach. It is good for a starter, but even more for somebody like me coming withsome other background ( 10 years of aikido and a MMA school recently). Although I knew and practiced some of the contents from this video there was still plenty of information for me to digest. What distinguishes you from others is your skill of organizing knowledge. BTW, I do not understand why some other senseis do not share their knowledge over youtube. In the end. one still needs to come to a club and meet your real sparring partners.

    I've never had traditional training. I sparred with friends, when I was younger. watched movies and got inspired. I watch a lot of videos on CZcams and practice at home. I knew a lot of the stuff you were talking about but just wanted to see if you had different ideas. I'm trying to piece together different marshal arts to fit my style.

    at 8:40 you explain the steps, does it matter much which steps you do or is it just a matter of preference? I'm having more trouble doing the steps with both feet at the same time compared to 1 feet catching up.

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Thom, there is a time and place for each of these steps, which we will explore in future videos. Meantime, I would suggest being able to do each to develop your agility and strength in the legs, and most importantly, being able to maintain a good stance while moving. Also, based on your earlier comment, you said you are quite generously built, so in this case moving both feet at the same time can be more challenging. It is also more of a "small guy" move, so not always necessary for bigger practitioners, but it will get easier as you improve your fitness. Keep on training and you'll get there!

    how do you get big forearms?

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  Před 4 lety +2

      Good question, Katana. Might make a video on forearm/wrist conditioning... In a nutshell, I do a quick routine (5 min) every week or so where I flex my hands in every direction, fingers open and making a fist alternatively, until I feel a good burn in the forearm muscles. Grips also when doing weights mostly with pulling motions. Hope this helps! - Patrick

    Rough and Tumble, if you want to count that
    Combat jujutsu, a brief foray into Kenpo. And Wing Chun
    Continuous movement I think, is the concept I've seen most misunderstood
    And of course keeping the chin down

    • @EffectiveMartialArts
      @EffectiveMartialArts  Před rokem

      The principles will remain the same, but you'll want to reduce your movement and be a bit more flat footed. Know that this will make you a more easily attainable target, so you'll need to get good at solid blocking and countering. Hope this helps!
