    Upgrading a 13 year old Mac
    Do this at your own risk! I am not responsible for any possible damage.
    All of this applies only to the 2007 or 7.1 iMac. Check other Mac models' compatibility in catalina patcher website, link below.

    CPU(t9500, t9300 is a cheaper option, t9400 wont work due to fsb speed difference) (Wow, the CPU prices have doubled since i made this video):

    RAM(ddr2 667mhz, 4 gb ddr2 modules are expensive due to being rare, i bought 2 modules for a somewhat reduced price):

    SSD(probably any sata ssd will work, buy what is cheapest as it cannot run at full sata3 speed anyway in this mac):for example Kingston UV400 or A400, or if you have an old but working one, i recommend using that, i had a used PM871

    I’m pretty sure you can lower the risk by holding down the power button for 10 seconds with the power cord removed to discharge the power supply

    ootko suomesta :D tuosta englannin aksentista ei voi erehtyä! Mulla on kaksi tällaista, 24" sekä 20" mid-2007. Molemmissa prossuna T7700. Tuohon isompaan olisi hauskaa laittaa X7900 tai T9500, Catalina-tukea en tarvitse.

    Question: why not replace the optical drive with a second SSD? is it worth it?

    • @optimallyobscureperformanc6264
      @optimallyobscureperformanc6264  Před 3 lety +3

      I think you can do that, you will need an adapter though because the optical drive uses slimline sata like laptops. I can't figure out a reason to have 2 SSD's, but i think that is possible.

    Добрый день. Помогите пожалуйста. Есть imac 9,1 будет ли работать на нем c2q q9000 или T9900. Сейчас стоит e8135, шина и сокет одинаковые.

      @optimallyobscureperformanc6264  Před 5 měsíci

      No idea if c2q will work in 9.1, my guess would be that it doesn't, may need at least bios modding of some kind if possible at all.

    Hello! Great video. I have my 2007 iMac with the same upgrades and Catalina working. But now Big Sur has come out and I would like to upgrade to that. Have you tackled that yet? I have tried to use the different patchers out there and they all seem to have issues. Using the barrykn micropatcher I cannot seem to get the external USB to boot. I get the ( / ) now allowed to boot symbol. Any help would be appreciated!

    • @optimallyobscureperformanc6264
      @optimallyobscureperformanc6264  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks! Sorry, i haven't tried Big Sur yet. The unsupported mac list lists 2009 macs as oldest ones compatible... I would be interested to get big sur on this 2007 too, but currently too much other things going on and that imac is in daily use so not that keen to experiment on it now. Sure i'll let you know if i take a look at it in the future.

      @@peteg.463 the limitation is the GPU: need METAL function, because the unsupported ones can’t get the hardware acceleration working, which makes everything very slow. Some of the 2009-2011 iMac can have the graphics card replaced with a Metal supported one, thus possible to run unsupported Big Sur. The rest of us are still waiting for some genius to come up with a solution for graphics hardware acceleration.

      Be advised those extreme CPU upgrades can make the WiFi useless.
      Up grades to 2.4 gHz. T8300 and 2.8 gHz. X900 CPU's do not chance losing you the WiFi.

      To use Catalina CPU needs to be upgraded, as author of catalinapatcher dosdude says: "The 2007 iMac 7,1 is compatible if the CPU is upgraded to a Penryn-based Core 2 Duo, such as a T9300."
