  • This is a discussion of favorite books for 5th graders. My 5th grade students love to read, and recommend these books to each other. Many of the books have been read aloud in 5th-grade classes. These books are some of my kid's favorite books, and all are very engaging for various reasons. Some are books I would describe as heartwarming stories centered around family and overcoming trials. Some books appeal to athletic kids and books appealing to students who enjoy fiction set during WWII. All of the books mentioned in this video are in my Amazon store. Just click the link below. Happy reading!! #booksfor5thgraders #childrensbooks
    Hello Teachers! My name is Melanie Howell, and I have been a classroom teacher for more than 20 years. The majority of my teaching years have been spent in fifth grade. I love getting up and going to school because no two days are ever the same. I love pouring myself into the lives of my students, AND I love learning something new every day. Teaching allows me to be a servant and a leader. It is all about making a difference in the life of a child.

    I recommend “The Distance Between Us” it’s about a Reyna Grande’s tragic past with her parents. This book was amazing I was reading it over the summer non stop! My sister gave me this book and told me if I wanted it, of course I said yes. I love love loved the book not only was it funny it was really heartbreaking. This is a 5th grade book and if you do AR this book is worth 11 points there’s also one for young readers you can also take that quiz since it’s practically the same and more AR points! This book was amazing it takes awhile to read but it’s worth it!!!

    I purchased Refugee for my 5th grader yesterday and he is really into it. The pace of the book is exactly as you described and he dove right into. My son mentioned this was the darkest book he has ever read. After reading a couple of chapters, I have to agree that the content is a little heavy for kids who are naieve and sheltered about these about these topics. Just wanted to give a heads up to parents considering this book.

    My daughter just started the 5th grade and has been reading a lot. One of the books we read together in Spring (because she and I like to read books and do the voices) was The Girl Who Drank the Moon (Kelly Barnhill). She liked it so much that when she started school last week, her ELA teacher, Mr. C, had a set of books each kid could borrow to read that they would then pass around to each other. She grabbed that one to re-read it (though we have our own copy at home) but she told her school friends they HAD TO read it next. Now, since we're currently taking in Afghan refugees, I think I'm going to turn toward Refugee as something to read together next. Thanks for sharing your insights and experiences on these books.

    I HIGHLY I mean HIGHLY recommend the series "Wings Of Fire" I feel like it's a GREAT book for 5th graders because I'm a fifth grader and I love it. At lunch I have a whole table with friends and everyone reads it except for one person. There are 3 arcs but the first one is about 5 dragonets (baby dragons) that are 6. (About 12 human years) that have to stop a war. There is a prophecy that tells them how to do it. It seems like the arcs have different themes like the first one is friendship, second is trust, and not sure the third because im only on the first one in the 3rd arch.
    I would also recommend "Restart" its about this boy that fell off his roof and got demisha and he has to restart his life. But he was a past bully so everyone hates him and does not trust that he changed.

Her dad was taken away to fight in the war and all she wants is for him to come back. They then had to leave Korea because it was very unsafe. That’s all I got from. I’m dying to refind it but it’s so hard to find it because I don’t know the name nor the author. If anyone knows a book like that, please let me know. Maybe it could be the book I’m looking for.

      @TeachersPlaybook  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, especially with virtual school happening in many communities, there is even more screen time than before. When I was trying to increase a child's desire to read, one thing that worked for me was to read books that I thought the child would enjoy. (Yes, I started reading the children's chapter books.) Then, I would talk about the book like it was the BEST book I had ever read and try to generate some excitement for the book. If nothing else, I was modeling a love of reading. When kids see that excitement, they want to be a part of it. I wish you (and your daughter) happy reading!
